This book is a good attempt to bring us the man from his humble origins to the decline and fall. The milestones we likely all know but here are nuggets and gems along the timeline from the records, the fans and his friends some less so in due course that show how the music evolved somehow bringing some kind of order to the tumbling stream of inspiration Marc contended with from the earliest of days. At times I was astounded at what I took for granted turning out to be altogether different. OK I knew about the mod stuff and his falls from grace, maybe too the sadder times of indulgence and losing the plot. But it escaped me how slight his education had been. This and other factors were, however, the Cosmic Dancer: The Life & Music of Marc Bolan contends perhaps what provided his unique approach to his work, and especially his lyrics and instrumental progress. Many had good things to say about this uniquely gifted man but the book balances these nicely with words from others who Marc left behind. The music biz can be cruel. Is usually cruel more times than kind. You get the passion for the man and his music in the words and profuse illustrations that the author brings to bear in this tome. Whether he still feels he did the subject as complete justice as he would have liked I can only wonder.

In 1971 Johnny Thunders formed the New York Dolls, a band of transvestites, and John Cale (of the Velvet Underground's fame) recorded Jonathan Richman's Modern Lovers, while Alice Cooper went on stage with his "horror shock" show. In London, Malcom McLaren opened a boutique that became a center for the non-conformist youth. The following year, 1972, was the year of David Bowie's glam-rock, but, more importantly, Tom Verlaine and Richard Hell formed the Neon Boys, while Big Star coined power-pop. Finally, unbeknownst to the masses, in august 1974 a new band debuted at the CBGB's in New York: the Ramones. The future was brewing, no matter how flat and bland the present looked. Album Review: Angelheaded Hipster: The Songs of Marc Bolan & T.Rex (BMG) September 16, 2020 A stellar ensemble of artists which include Nick Cave, Lucinda Williams, Todd Rundgren, Joan Jett, two sons of John Lennon amongst others, lay down a worthy and often inspired double album’s worth of classic Marc Bolan songs. Preceding his induction to the Rock’n’Roll Hall of Fame later in November this year. Angelheaded hipsters burning for the ancient heavenly connection. Alan Ginsberg’s Howl and the Beats were one creative well from which the persona of Marc Bolan arose. He regarded himself as a poet foremost, around which he constructed melodies. Variations on twelve bar blues. Published his collected poems The Warlock of Love in 1969. Sold 40,000 but not well received by some critics. Producer Hal Willner regarded him as a serious writer of the calibre of Kurt Weill, Thelonious Monk and Charles Mingus. He passed away in April this year. Grateful for all his past inuences. Played in skife bands. In a trio with Helen Shapiro. Took notice of Phil Spector, Bob Dylan, Dion and the Belmonts. Looked like Dylan for a while. Marc’s father was a Russian Jew. At some point Feld became Bolan. To mirror Chuck Berry, he then became the English Poet of Rock’n’Roll. From 1970 to 1973 he took over from the recently split Beatles in popularity. Appeared in Ringo Starr’s lm Born to Boogie. Started Glam Rock. David Bowie took lessons and came up with Ziggy Stardust. We needed him to give us something to listen to when all that Prog Rock noodling was spilling over.

  • Joan Jett & the Blackhearts
Joan Jett & the Blackhearts By Jaan Uhelszki As leader of her hard-rockin’ band, Jett has influenced countless young women to pick up guitars - and play loud. IF YOU HAD TO SIT DOWN AND IMAGINE THE IDEAL female rocker, what would she look like? Tight leather pants, lots of mascara, black (definitely not blond) hair, and she would have to play guitar like Chuck Berry’s long-lost daughter. She wouldn’t look like Madonna or Taylor Swift. Maybe she would look something like Ronnie Spector, a little formidable and dangerous, definitely - androgynous, for sure. In fact, if you close your eyes and think about it, she would be the spitting image of Joan Jett. ^ Jett has always brought danger, defiance, and fierceness to rock & roll. Along with the Blackhearts - Jamaican slang for loner - she has never been afraid to explore her own vulnerabilities or her darker sides, or to speak her mind. It wouldn’t be going too far to call Joan Jett the last American rock star, pursuing her considerable craft for the right reason: a devo tion to the true spirit of the music. She doesn’t just love rock & roll; she honors it. ^ Whether she’s performing in a blue burka for U.S. troops in Afghanistan, working for PETA, or honoring the slain Seattle singer Mia Zapata by recording a live album with Zapata’s band the Gits - and donating the proceeds to help fund the investigation of Zapata’s murder - her motivation is consistent. Over the years, she’s acted as spiritual advisor to Ian MacKaye, Paul Westerberg, and Peaches.

  • Glam Rock by Barney Hoskyns 1
Glam Rock By Barney Hoskyns There's a new sensation A fabulous creation, A danceable solution To teenage revolution Roxy Music, 1973 1: All the Young Dudes: Dawn of the Teenage Rampage Glamour – a word first used in the 18th Century as a Scottish term connoting "magic" or "enchantment" – has always been a part of pop music. With his mascara and gold suits, Elvis Presley was pure glam. So was Little Richard, with his pencil moustache and towering pompadour hairstyle. The Rolling Stones of the mid-to- late Sixties, swathed in scarves and furs, were unquestionably glam; the group even dressed in drag to push their 1966 single "Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing in the Shadow?" But it wasn't until 1971 that "glam" as a term became the buzzword for a new teenage subculture that was reacting to the messianic, we-can-change-the-world rhetoric of late Sixties rock. When T. Rex's Marc Bolan sprinkled glitter under his eyes for a TV taping of the group’s "Hot Love," it signaled a revolt into provocative style, an implicit rejection of the music to which stoned older siblings had swayed during the previous decade. "My brother’s back at home with his Beatles and his Stones," Mott the Hoople's Ian Hunter drawled on the anthemic David Bowie song "All the Young Dudes," "we never got it off on that revolution stuff..." As such, glam was a manifestation of pop's cyclical nature, its hedonism and surface show-business fizz offering a pointed contrast to the sometimes po-faced earnestness of the Woodstock era.

A Quartet of Tyrannosaurus Rex and T.Rex titles set for release in March Submitted by: Bennett Public Relations Tuesday, 7 January 2014 TYRANNOSAURUS REX AND T.REX A QUARTET OF MARC BOLAN RELEASES FOR MARCH 2014 Four classic albums from Marc Bolan’s Tyrannosaurus Rex and T. Rex catalogue will be released on 3 March 2014 by Universal Music Catalogue/Polydor and by Demon Music on their Edsel label. The release of A Beard of Stars, T.Rex, and a double CD set including Tanx and Zinc Alloy And The Riders of Tomorrow/A Creamed Cage, come just prior to the national tour of 20th Century Boy http://www.20thcenturyboythemusical.co.uk, a new musical inspired by the life of the rock legend who continues to captivate each and every generation with his catalogue of hits and classic tracks. Universal Music Catalogue/Polydor turn back the clock for the earliest of the releases – A Beard of Stars (1970) and T.Rex from 1971, each with a bonus disc of rarities unmask Bolan on the threshold of success. A Beard of Stars, a more accessible and streamlined outing than previous Tyrannosaurus Rex releases turned out to be Bolan’s farewell to his late ’60s hippie duo and was the first to feature photogenic new sidekick, the bongo-playing Mickey Finn. The tie-in single, By The Light Of A Magical Moon, was as charming as its title, and the entire set is woven with mysticism and melody. A Beard Of Stars also marked the first real stirrings of electricity, with album closer Elemental Child clocking in at five-a-a-half-minutes, thanks to some extended Hendrix-style guitar soloing.

Rex was at the screaming height of post Beatle teen pop mania. But that wasn’t quite the whole story. In his lust for glory, the self-mythmaking Bolan had been on the road seven years as a pop art mod, a Dylanesque folk rocker, a whimsical away- with-the-fairy’s acoustic balladeer and psychedelic astral ensemble hippy before he struck chart Gold with his nursery rhyme space age electric boogie. He had 10 top five singles (including four number ones) in the space of two and a half years, and then it all faded away. When his elegiac epic of youthful fantasy, Teenage Dream, stalled at number 13 in February 1974, the female backing singers refrain “Whatever happened to the teenage dream?” made it sound as if they were bidding adieu to Bolan himself.
