• New Approaches Toward Recent Gay Chicano Authors and Their Audience
Selling a Feeling: New Approaches Toward Recent Gay Chicano Authors and Their Audience Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Douglas Paul William Bush, M.A. Graduate Program in Spanish and Portuguese The Ohio State University 2013 Dissertation Committee: Ignacio Corona, Advisor Frederick Luis Aldama Fernando Unzueta Copyright by Douglas Paul William Bush 2013 Abstract Gay Chicano authors have been criticized for not forming the same type of strong literary identity and community as their Chicana feminist counterparts, a counterpublic that has given voice not only to themselves as authors, but also to countless readers who see themselves reflected in their texts. One of the strengths of the Chicana feminist movement is that they have not only produced their own works, but have made sense of them as well, creating a female-to-female tradition that was previously lacking. Instead of merely reiterating that gay Chicano authors have not formed this community and common identity, this dissertation instead turns the conversation toward the reader. Specifically, I move from how authors make sense of their texts and form community, to how readers may make sense of texts, and finally, to how readers form community. I limit this conversation to three authors in particular—Alex Espinoza, Rigoberto González, and Manuel Muñoz— whom I label the second generation of gay Chicano writers. In González, I combine the cognitive study of empathy and sympathy to examine how he constructs affective planes that pull the reader into feeling for and with the characters that he draws.

Amazon delivers hefty profits, led by web services 27 April 2018 The Seattle-based firm spotlighted the juggernaut growth of its Amazon Web Services (AWS) division, which hosts services and content that companies use in the internet cloud. AWS leads big-name rivals Microsoft and Google in the market that has boomed with the lifestyle shift to accessing movies, music, games and more from online devices. Historical objects are juxta- posed with contemporary works, creative spaces from the Bauhaus period are confronted with their current equivalents. The show builds a bridge between the cultures of play and experi- mental techniques at the Bauhaus and comparable approaches in contemporary design workshops and innovation labs. The exhibits are divided up into nine areas, not following a chronol- ogy and not as separate units, but understood as dialogically linked sections with fl uid transitions. In spite of the visual analogies, dif- ferent worlds collide here, raising questions about the potential and the scope of play.

BEST PRACTICES HOW AMAZON DOES IT An exclusive look at decision-making inside the world’s most pioneering digital company. BY RAM CHARAN REUTERS/ALBERT GEA 36 CORPORATE BOARD MEMBER FIRST QUARTER 2020 AMAZON STORY 1Q20.indd 26 12/11/19 2:57 PM he digital age demands high-velocity, high-quality decisions, yet decision-making in traditional companies is hindered by so many hierarchical layers, coordination committees and standing councils that their very survival is at stake. Without algorithms and data at the center of their decision-making, traditional companies cannot compete with today’s digital giants. In 1994, Amazon started creating the greatest revolution in decision-making with one of the oldest cornerstones of success in business: customer obsession. For his new book, The Amazon Management System, world-renowned business adviser, author and speaker Ram Charan drew on publicly available information and interviews with high-level former and current Amazon employees to crystalize some of the ideas and insights developed by Jeff Bezos and his team. This excerpt details how CEOs, managers and directors can increase the Tvelocity and quality of their decisions to gain an upper hand against their traditional competitors. Amazon’s Jeff Bezos focused on the oldest of old business principles—extraordinary customer obsession to the level that each customer is treated individually—and turned it into the ultimate business purpose of his company. As everyone knows, digitization was the engine that enabled the company to treat each one of its more than 100 million customers as if they were shopping at a corner store in a small town.
