YOU ARE AT SAINT MARGARET MARY CATHOLIC CHURCH HUB OF THE LATIN LITURGY IN OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA

The Traditional Latin Mass (now called by the Holy Father: Mass in the Extraordinary Form) is brought to you through the ministry of the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest.

WHAT IS THE INSTITUTE OF CHRIST THE KING SOVEREIGN PRIEST? The Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest is a Society of Apostolic Life of Pontifical Right whose goal is the honor of God and the sanctification of priests in the ser- vice of the Church and souls. Its specific aim is missionary: to spread the reign of our Lord Jesus Christ in all spheres of human life. Our work is carried out under the patronage of the , to Whom the Institute is consecrated.

Recognizing the importance of a deep harmony between faith, liturgy, life, and the power of beauty in attracting the human senses to the things above, an integral part of the Institute’s charism is the use of the traditional Latin Liturgy of 1962 for the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and the other sacraments. Great care for a solemn liturgy, complete fidelity to the doctrine of the Church and the Holy Father, and awareness of the central role of Grace, especially Charity – these are essential elements of the Institute’s spirituality, which is drawn from its three co-patrons, St. Benedict, St. Thomas Aquinas, and St. Francis de Sales. Our motto is “Live the truth in charity." The Institute operates in more than fifty places in twelve countries, where our priests focus on the care of souls in many different ways. To assist our priests in their apostolic work, the Institute also has clerical oblates. In 2004, a community of religious sisters was canonically established to aid the priests in their mis- sion through prayer and apostolic work. The Institute was founded in 1990 by Monsignor Gilles Wach. Today, the motherhouse and international seminary of the Institute is located in Gricigliano, in the Archdiocese of Florence, Italy. The Institute serves the faithful of the Bay since 2005 at St. Margaret Mary in Oakland and at Five Wounds in San Jose (Mass at 12:30 pm on Sunday, 12:15 pm on Weekdays but Sat. at 7:30 am)

MESSAGE FROM FR. GLENN NAGUIT:

On behalf of all of us, I’d like to thank all those who helped us to prepare and celebrate the re- cent liturgies for the Triduum and Easter: the choir members, cantors, organists, altar servers for all of the Masses; Joan Konrad and those who helped her with the floral arrangements; John Burkart, Ricky Wong; Canon Meney and Abbé Kevin for the altar of repose. Many thanks! * Please pray for our children who will be re- ceiving the Most Holy Body of Our Lord at their First Communion on May 14. Pray as well for the two transitional Deacons in our Diocese who will be ordained next month, May 26, at the Cathedral: Deacons Oscar Rojas and Matthew Murray. INSTITUTE OF CHRIST THE KING SOVEREIGN PRIEST

DIOCESAN APPROVED TRADITIONAL LATIN MASS APOSTOLATE FOR THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE MOTU PROPRIO, IN THE DIOCESE OF OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA

2 ND S UNDAY AFTER E ASTER (GOOD S HEPERD S UNDAY) S EMINARY COLLECTION Thanks for your generosity… best bonds to invest on! The seminary of the Institute of Christ the King is located in an an- cient chateau at Gricigliano in Tuscany, Italy, near Florence. There, our priests receive the formation that prepares them to serve the Sovereign Priest. The last members of the Martelli family, two elderly women who had continued the pious traditions of the family up until their death, donat- ed the building, as well as the surrounding vineyards and olive groves to the French Benedictine Monastery of Fontgombault. However, after twelve years, the Benedictine made the decision to close the priory because of the lack of Italian vocations. With the help of Car- dinal Mayer, then president of the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei, the Institute of Christ the King entered the picture.

The seminary includes living quarters for the seminarians, as well as an enormous refectory and a large kitchen, appropriate classrooms and a conference hall with up-to-date teaching equipment. The ob- ligatory formation for all our candidates to the holy priesthood is comprised of a one-year course of Spirituality, a two-year course of Philosophy, and a four-year course of Theology. This academ- ic program is taught by professors from Roman Universities, the Sorbonne, the IPC Philosophical Faculty in Paris, as well as by some of our own priests who have academic degrees. The oblates are also part of this formation, over a five-year period with selected courses chosen for them by their superiors. The intellectual formation of our seminarians is accompanied by a thoroughly human formation, which includes general culture, priestly manners, and an extensive amount of daily practical work in the house and around the outside grounds. This combination is very efficient for the complete education of mind and body which we want to give our semi- narians. A purely intellectual formation is never sufficient for a priest. His personality would certainly remain insufficiently formed, if it did not include a profound prayer life and the humility to accept practical duties and fulfill them well.

On the path to fulfilling their call to the Holy Priesthood, seminari- ans are called to holiness and service to souls in a world in urgent need of returning to Our Lord. However, they do not always have the financial means necessary for the seven to nine years to complete the seminary pro- gram to priesthood. The expense of maintaining the seminary building, as well as that of lodging, feeding, providing instruction, and supplying the necessary study materials to approximately eighty young men, is very high. Our seminarians are thus asked to contribute the relatively small amount of $1050 per month toward these costs, but many are not able to afford this contribution. Your help is necessary. No possible vocation would be turned down for financial reason. Abbe Jacob Wells is our Seminarian , who found his vocation at Saint Margaret Mary.
