2016 ANNUAL REPORT 3 FROM THE PRESIDENT Reflecting on a Milestone

t the quarterly meeting of Wagner’s Board of Trustees in October 2016, I was honored, and a bit surprised, when Chair Warren Procci announced that, as of July 1, I had become Wagner’s longest-serving Apresident. That is certainly a significant milestone in my own career, but it wasn’t a goal I had set when I started this job. Instead, since June 2002, when I had the privilege to become Wagner’s 18th president, I have worked every day to provide We achieved some of the vision and the leadership to make our College the very best. our biggest successes Even so, this recognition — this moment, as I like to say “ — prompted me to pause and think about all of the things over the past several we have accomplished together since I arrived at Wagner. I realized that we achieved some of our biggest successes over years, as the world’s the past several years, as the world’s economy sank. economy sank. In many ways, the past nine years were some of the most difficult for higher education in memory. The Great Recession forced students and parents to re-think college choices, especially the question of how to finance an education. ” Loans that they used to rely on became more difficult to obtain. Furthermore, many states have cut back aid to higher education, so that the grants students bring with them are often less than they would have been in 2007.

But, through all of these changes, we have steered Wagner clear of most obstacles and created a strong, stable institution recognized around the country for our good work.

Helping in Global Crisis When Mallory Lee ’15, a recent graduate, was laid off from her tech start-up job in Brooklyn, she headed to Europe and joined volunteer efforts to help refugees from Syria and other war-torn countries who were flooding across borders and over the Mediterranean Sea. She worked in Greek camps on island of Lesvos and on the Macedonian border. The work is “heartbreaking one moment, joyous the next, and sometimes simultaneously,” she said. “It’s a place where desperation and hope intersect, and while I will never share the same experiences as these refugees, we are able to connect because we are all humans.” Now she is in Lebanon, where she volunteers with refugee children and moonlights as a bartender.

WAGNER in the Media “ The Wagner Plan is first year through senior year. So it’s not just internships in your senior year but, from … your first year, you’ll be doing outside-of-the-classroom experiences. One of the awesome things about the school.” — Rob Franek, Princeton Review senior VP and publisher, on WPIX-11 news, February 23

Celebrating Achievement On May 20, the 610 members of Wagner’s class of 2016 commenced the next stage of their lives. The three commencement speakers shared inspirational stories and wise words. Brandon Stanton, creator of the well- known blog Humans of New York, encouraged students to trust themselves as they pursued their dreams. Nadia Lopez ’99 spoke of her educational journey to Wagner College and beyond. As principal of a school in one of ’s poorest neighborhoods, she says, “I have done there what I learned here at Wagner. … I’ve created a space where children are honored.” Finally, Romi Cohn remembered “escaping the angel of death many times” during the Holocaust, and spoke of his pride in being associated with Wagner College’s Holocaust Education Center.

The Historical Perspective on Diplomacy Wagner’s history department and the University of Paris-Sorbonne co-hosted a symposium, “International Relations, Diplomacy and Violence from the Medieval to the Early Modern Era,” in April at Wagner College. The meeting drew scholars from France, Italy, and Denmark as well as five U.S. states. Wagner faculty Shaohua Hu, Patricia Moynagh, and Makhroufi Ousmane Traoré (who also was the co-organizer) presented papers at the conference.

Wagner at the National Press Club Anthropology major Daniela Gutierrez de la Garza ’16 spoke at a National Press Club briefing in Washington, D.C., on January 20. One of three student panelists, Gutierrez described her capstone project about government-indigenous community relations in her home state of Durango, Mexico. She also addressed the value of liberal education paired with professional studies and civic engagement, the educational model used by Wagner College and the other member institutions of the New American Colleges and Universities, which organized the event.

Education with Payback The Princeton Review included Wagner College in its new guidebook, Colleges That Pay You Back: The 200 Schools That Give You the Best Bang for Your Tuition Buck. It is based on a “Return-on-Education” rating that measures 40 weighted data points — everything from academics, cost, financial aid, and student debt to graduation rates, alumni salaries, and job satisfaction.

A New Approach to Economics Utteeyo Dasgupta, assistant professor of economics, spent the summer working on his research at the United Nations University World Institute for Development Economics Research in Helsinki, Finland. He also presented his work in Helsinki and in Oslo, Norway, and enjoyed experiencing Finnish life and cuisine. Dasgupta and his co-authors are using sophisticated econometric techniques to investigate what effects enrolling in Delhi University’s selective colleges has on students. They are also studying other questions related to gender and caste differences. These studies on the intersection of psychology and economics belong to the field of behavioral economics. In the fall, Wagner launched what may be the nation’s first undergraduate program in behavioral economics.

Counselors Convene Upon the Hill The New York State Association for College Admission Counseling held its annual conference at Wagner College. It drew counselors from throughout New York State to see Wagner’s beautiful campus and experience the College’s hospitality, while they learned best practices in helping high school students prepare for and succeed in college. One longtime Wagner College friend, Robert Franek of the Princeton Review, tweeted, “@NYSACAC rocks this year! Just finished Adm[issions] talk with my old @WagnerCollege pals.”

STUDENTS in the Media “ From a student-athlete point of view, I think every athlete aspires to do something big so that at some point they could give back to their communities and I think this is a direct connection to what everyone is trying to achieve and we’re actually using our muscles to do the heavy lifting.” — Kendle Bramble ’17, in “New York Students Come to Philly to Help Build Community Garden,” The Philadelphia Tribune, July 9, 2016

Alumni Reunite and Show Support More than 400 alumni and friends of the College returned to campus on June 3–5 to reconnect with each other, celebrate each others’ achievements, and have fun on the Hill. The Golden Seahawk class of 1966 contributed a sizable reunion gift of more than $1.8 million, and the class of 2006 gave more than $108,000 in honor of their 10th anniversary.

African Leaders Learn at Wagner For the third year, Wagner provided a six-week institute on civic leadership for 25 young African leaders selected for President Obama’s Mandela Washington Fellowship. Modeled on the Port Richmond Partnership, the institute focused on the pillars of civic life and boosted the participants’ capacity to achieve their own not-for-profit interests and goals.

Young Alumni at Work Wagner’s Center for Academic and Career Engagement reported on career outcomes for the classes of 2012–15. An average of 66.7 percent of each graduating class had obtained full-time employment within the first six months of graduation. An average of 40.9 percent of each class were attending graduate school one year after graduating from Wagner. Obtaining real-world experience is an essential component of the Wagner Plan. A Powerful Learning Model A book released in July, The Power of Integrated Learning: Higher Education for Success in Life, Work and Society, features Wagner College among a unique group of colleges: those committed to blending the liberal arts with professional studies and civic engagement to produce what President Guarasci calls “the civic professional.” The featured schools all belong to a consortium called the New American Colleges and Universities.

Honoring a Great Leader The Department of Business Administration was renamed the Nicolais School of Business to honor Michael A. Nicolais ’49 H’14, who died on November 7, 2016. The son of Italian immigrants, he served in the Army infantry during World War II, receiving the Purple Heart, and became an investment manager for the Clark Estates and Wall Street firms. Nicolais served on the Wagner Board of Trustees and was a major College benefactor along with his wife, Margaret Christie Nicolais ’49 H’14. “His life is a testament to the very best of what America represents in its finest moments: high achievement, self-reliance and civic responsibility, all framed around foundational values of honor, duty, and the highest of ethical standards,” said President Guarasci. His daughter, Joan Nicolais, now serves as a Wagner trustee.

Achieving the College Dream Eleven high school students completed Wagner’s college readiness program, the Port Richmond Partnership Leadership Academy, and started their first year of college on scholarships. Eight of them joined the class of 2020 at Wagner College. Founded in 2013, this three-year program for students from Port Richmond High School in Staten Island is a pipeline to college attainment and civic engagement for teens who have a lot of potential, but could use a little extra push to achieve it.

WAGNER in the Media “ Free tuition is too simplistic a solution to an extremely complex problem. If we aren’t thoughtful in our approach to reforms, we’ll be hurting far more people than we help — and wind up putting the American dream even further out of reach.” — President Richard Guarasci, “Free Tuition Would Create More Inequities Than It Solves,” Austin American-Statesman, September 5, 2016

And he could not be more happy about how his college experience challenged him. At this point in his career, Morris has become one of the youngest people ever named a vice president at Fidelity Investments. Working out of Tampa, he has almost $1 billion in assets under management and was inducted into the Practice Management Institute for Fidelity’s top one percent of advisors. “I attribute my success to Wagner,” he says. Although he is only in his early 30s, he has already put a plan in place to give a significant portion of his assets to establish a scholarship for economics students at the College. “To give someone else an opportunity to succeed in a similar field would be very meaningful,” he says. ouise Wickert Murphy would have loved to go to college, her sons say. Born in 1906, the Ldaughter of German immigrants, she was only able to attain a high school diploma. But her lack of opportunity never dampened her love of learning and appreciation for higher education. She married Walter Michael Murphy Sr. in 1934. They had three sons, whom she inculcated with the unshakable conviction that they would go to college. And they did, all three of them, earning their degrees at Wagner College: Walter, class of 1958; Bob, class of 1960; and Hank, class of 1963 and master’s degree class of 1969. The brothers grew up in a cozy English Tudor home in Staten Island, just a couple of miles away from the Wagner campus. Creative, energetic, and disciplined, she filled the home with antiques that she picked up inexpensively and rehabilitated. She crocheted, knitted, and embroidered, making home decorations as well as her own dresses. Brothers Hank Murphy ’63 M’69 (left) and Bob Murphy ’60 hold a photo of their mother, Louise W. Murphy. Cronin Jr. ’74. “By giving people knowledge, you enable Ethem to become the master or mistress of “their own destiny.” Cronin’s own life is proof of his philosophy, which also inspired him to establish an estate gift benefiting Wagner College students. Born and raised on Staten Island, Cronin was the only child of a homemaker and a grocery store clerk. His parents fully supported him to attain a college education, and Cronin earned his tuition money by working 25 hours a week at a local grocery store for six years, throughout undergraduate and graduate school. At Wagner, he majored in history. In high school, he found history interesting, and he had a knack for memorizing dates. Under Wagner professors like George Rappaport, however, Cronin discovered a new way of approaching history. “It wasn’t just the recitation of facts but the whys,” Cronin says. He struggled to meet Rappaport’s expectations, making it all the more memorable and satisfying when he finally succeeded. Cronin also recalls with appreciation Robert A lifelong fan, John J.
