They seem like fun, easy projects, when in reality they are arduous ventures beset by countless pitfalls. The actor (whose creative labour produces the performances) can become obscured by the star (associated with existential qualities). It is difficult to accurately assess the industrial, cultural and aesthetic factors that shape audience perspectives and actors’ careers. There are no straightforward ways to connect star studies with accounts, for example, of African-American cinema. Even ‘star image’ is an ambiguous term. Martin Shingler notes that star studies can (and should) consider a host of issues, including ‘a performer’s star qualities and idiolect, their career trajectory … the significance of collaborators … the emergence of their type and star vehicles’ (2012: 183). Beyond this, these studies will show how ‘stars embody, incarnate or personify social groups or historical moments, [and negotiate] ideological contradictions that emerge within or between social groups’; on the flip side, they also aim to clarify ‘how certain types of audiences or members of a specific social group … have engaged with and made use of stars at particular historical moments’ (ibid.). Juggling disparate visions of stardom, these studies consider how a star functions as ‘an industrial marketing device’, a meaning- producing element within films and a working professional involved in the fields of art and performance (Gledhill 1991a: xiii).

History Film Analysis Introduction The purpose of this exercise is to allow students to learn more about analyzing and using professional dramatic films as a resource for understanding history. Students must locate an approved movie/film using the list below. Depending on which course you are taking, only certain movies may be used for a course. View the film. Then write an analysis of the movie. This calls for a short essay with a thesis, evidence, and conclusion that closely follow the directions below. You are not doing a general summary or review of the movie; and you are not doing a formal film critique of the movie—you are focusing on the historical qualities of the film. Follow these instructions carefully. Instructions Write a persuasive essay containing a minimum of seven (7) well edited paragraphs critically analyzing the film as follows: 1. Identify the primary (single) point of the film. Was the movie, for example, sympathetic or critical? How did the movie attempt to persuade the audience to accept this point of view? According to Plaintiff, the drama, which starred Denzel Washington as Tolson, garnered “tens of millions of dollars,” together with numerous awards, and Plaintiff seeks to reap the estate’s share of those profits that he alleges was unlawfully deprived of by Defendants. See id. at 8, 14. 1 Professor Mason Jerry “M.J.” Barrett Professor Mason Jerry Barrett was born August 18, 1904, in Marshall, Harrison County, Texas, to the union of Edwin Roberts Barrett and Della Rhone Barrett. Prof. Barrett was their first child to survive infancy. He was named after the attending physician, Dr. Mason James Snowden. Dr. Snowden, who was married to Fannie J. Barrett, Prof. Barrett’s aunt and sister of his father, graduated from Meharry Medical College in 1888, and was one of the first, if not the first, African-American physicians in Marshall, Texas. Prior to enrolling in Meharry, Dr. Snowden had worked at the Oakland Normal School, a leading teacher-training institution for African-Americans in Oakland, Colorado County, Texas. Prof. Barrett was also named after his paternal grandfather, Jerry Barrett, a former slave from Alabama. Prof. Barrett had two sisters, Anna Eva Barrett Brown and Charlotte Barrett Sanders, and a beloved nephew, Julius E. “Sonnie” Sanders. It appears that education was a key component focused on by the Barrett family. Just a few years out of slavery, his paternal grandmother, Charlotte Lane Barrett of Leesburg, Loudoun County Virginia, attended and graduated from the renowned Bordentown School in New Jersey. Bordentown School was founded by the late Rev. Walter Rice, grandfather of former National Security Advisor under President Barack Obama, Susan Rice. U.S. Census records show that Grandmother Barrett was a nurse. Born and raised in a city and county that at one time had the highest population of slaves in the state of Texas, Professor Barrett’s childhood was not without incident as his father, Edwin Roberts Barrett, had to leave his home and family after resisting, expressing and voicing his opposition to racial discrimination and racial harassment in Marshall, only able to return in “the dark of the night” to visit his family.

September 2014 (initial submission) April 2015 (final submission) Thesis Number: 20120341 ABSTRACT FROM THE CINEMA SCREEN TO THE SMARTPHONE: A study of the impact of media convergence on the distribution sector of American independent cinema 2006 – 2010 Hayley Trowbridge Film distribution has undoubtedly changed during this contemporary era of media convergence, with a range of innovative practices and methods being adopted across US film and the arrival of new organisations to the industry and distribution sector. This should not suggest that conventional distribution and marketing methods are extinct, or that the traditional gatekeepers of these fields are obsolete. Rather it should indicate a merging of old and new strategies, practices, methods, and organisations, and it is through this fusion of tradition and novelty that today’s complex distribution landscape has emerged. At the forefront of many of these changes has been American independent cinema and as such, the central question posed by this thesis is: how has media convergence impacted on the distribution and marketing of American independent cinema, and how can this impact be understood in terms of wider technological, industrial and sociocultural contexts relevant to the current media landscape? In answering this, this thesis provides a comprehensive re-mapping of the distribution sector of American independent cinema, in terms of the distributors involved and methods and strategies through which films are being released, within this contemporary era of media convergence.
