Pawlik ABSTRACT The naturally-occurring inducers of larval settlement and metamorphosis have recently been isolated and identified for the northeast Pacific reef-building sabellariid polychaete, Phragmatopoma californica, and the larval responses of this species compared, in reciprocal laboratory settlement assays, to those of its European counterpart, Sabel/aria alveolata, The present study includes the larval behavior of two additional sabellariids from the western Atlantic, P. lapidasa, a reef-building species, and S. jlaridensis, a non-gregarious species. Larval responses of P. lapidosa were very similar to those of P. californica. In reciprocal laboratory assays of both species, greater metamorphosis occurred on conspecific than on heterospecific tube sand, but both metamorphosed more frequently on heterospecific tube sand than on control sand. Organic solvent extraction of the sand/cement matrix of tubes of P. lapidosa removed its capacity to induce conspecific metamorphosis. The capacity was retained in the lipid-soluble extract and was recovered as a single fraction by high-performance liquid chromatography. The inducers were identified by gas chromatography as a mixture of free fatty acids (FFAs) ranging from 14 to 22 carbons in length. The mixture contained the same component FFAs as the inductive fraction from the natural tube sand of P. californica, but the relative proportions were different. Of the FFAs found in the naturally-occurring mixture, larval metamorphosis was greatest in response to 16: I, 18:2, 20:4 and 20:5, with a significant response to 16: I at as low as I /l-g!gsand (surface area;;! 36 cm2). -

These systems lack abiotic three-dimensional structures but host biogenic structures that play critical roles in controlling abiotic conditions and resources. Here I review how reef-building polychaetes (RBP) engineer their environment and affect habitat quality, thus regulating community structure, ecosystem functioning, and the provision of ecosystem services in shallow waters. The analysis focuses on different engineering mechanisms, such as hard substrate production, effects on hydrodynamics, and sediment transport, and impacts mediated by filter feeding and biodeposition. Finally, I deal with landscape-level topographic alteration by RBP. In conclusion, RBP have positive impacts on diversity and abundance of many species mediated by the structure of the reef. Additionally, by feeding on phytoplankton and decreasing water turbidity, RBP can control primary production, increase light penetration, and might alleviate the effects of eutrophication -

Summary: Sabellaria alcocki Gravier, 1906, described for the Indian Ocean, should not be present in the Mediterranean area. Though S. spinulosa alcocki, a Mediterranean variety, can be well-distinguished from S. alcocki, it has recently been referred to as S. alcocki. Thus, S. alcocki appears in the Italian coast checklist. The recent finding of S. spinulosa reefs along the southern Adriatic coast, the first report of these biogenic constructions in the Mediterranean area, allowed us to compare its morphological variability with that of S. alcocki. A morphometric analysis of the opercular paleae showed a great deal of intrapopulation, size-independent variation, which cannot justify the existence of varieties within S. spinulosa. Moreover, the analysis of post-settlement development showed that opercular features change during individual growth. Recently set- tled individuals resemble S. alcocki, while the more advanced life stages become closer to S. spinulosa. This is the case of Sabellaria alcocki Gravier, 1906 whose Mediterranean records probably refer to juveniles of S. spinulosa (Leuckart, 1849). We hereby provide molecular tools (DNA barcoding) to improve correct delimitation of the Mediterranean species of this genus. Key-words: Polychaeta, Sabellaria alveolata, Sabellaria spinulosa, Sabellaria alcocki, COI. Introduction - Sabellaria (Lamarck, 1818) species are gregarious tube-builder polychaetes which produce complex reefs representing valuable and diverse habitats in coastal areas (La Porta and Nicoletti, 2009). Today three Sabellaria species are recorded for the Mediterranean Sea: S. alveolata (L., 1767), S. spinulosa (Leuckart, 1849) and S. alcocki Gravier, 1906 (Castelli et al., 2008). This last is a valid species but according to several authors it is exclusive of the Indian Ocean and its Mediterranean records should be carefully revised (Lezzi et al., 2015). The operculum is of paramount taxonomic importance for Sabellaria species identification, but its intraspecific variation, especially during development, may lead to confusion. Lecce-Monteroni 73100 Lecce RESEARCH ARTICLE ITALY Abstract 1 - Lagoons are ecotones between freshwater, marine and terrestrial biotopes, characterized by internal ecosystem heterogeneity, due to patchy spatial and temporal distribution of biotic and abiotic components, and inter-ecosystem heterogeneity, due to the various terrestrial-freshwater and freshwater-marine interfaces. 2 - Here, we carried out an analysis of environmental heterogeneity and benthic macro-invertebrate guilds in a sample of 26 Italian lagoons based on literature produced over a 25 year period.. 3 - In all, 944 taxonomic units, belonging to 13 phyla, 106 orders and 343 families, were recorded. Most species had a very restricted geographic distribution range. 75% of the macroinvertebrate taxa were observed in less than three of the twenty-six lagoons considered. 4 - Similarity among macroinvertebrate guilds in lagoon ecosystems was remarkably low, ranging from 10.5%±7.5% to 34.2%±14.4% depending on the level of taxonomic resolution. 5 - Taxonomic heterogeneity was due to both differences in species richness and to differences in species composition: width of seaward outlet, lagoon surface area and water salinity were the most important factors affecting species richness, together accounting for up to 75% of observed inter-lagoon heterogeneity, while distance between lagoons was the most significant factor affecting similarity of species composition. -

JNCC report No. 504 Summary The Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) commissioned this project to generate an improved understanding of the sensitivities of Sabellaria spinulosa reefs based on the OSPAR habitat definition. This work aimed to provide an evidence base to facilitate and support management advice for Marine Protected Areas, development of UK marine monitoring and assessment, and conservation advice to offshore marine industries. The OSPAR list of threatened and declining species and habitats refers to subtidal S. spinulosa reefs on hard or mixed substratum. S. spinulosa may also occur as thin crusts or individual worms but these are not the focus of conservation. The purpose of this project was to produce sensitivity assessments with supporting evidence for S. spinulosa reefs, clearly documenting the evidence behind the assessments and the confidence in these assessments. Sixteen pressures, falling in five categories - biological, hydrological, physical damage, physical loss, and pollution and other chemical changes - were assessed in this report. To develop each sensitivity assessment, the resistance and resilience of the key elements of the habitat were assessed against the pressure benchmark using the available evidence. -

The lack of data concerning the feeding mechanisms of polychaete sabellariids is an impediment to understanding their roles in these systems. In this study, we combine a descrip- tive approach based on SEM observations and histological mapping of mucocytes with video endo- scopic recordings to provide a functional interpretation of particle capture and processing mecha- nisms. It is hypothesised that particle capture in S. alveolata is based on the beat of grouped cilia. The cilia types and distributions of tentacles are described, and both downstream and upstream collect- ing mechanisms are demonstrated in this species. Other feeding characteristics, such as the flicking of tentacles, are involved in particle capture. Feeding mechanisms suggest previously unsuspected similarities with lophophorids. The role of mucus in S. alveolata was characterised in the tentacles, grooves and buccal cavity, and the functional specialisation of organs in transport or rejection of par- ticles was confirmed with video recordings. Tentacles and grooves collect and transport particles towards the mouth, and only viscous acid mucopolysaccharide-secreting mucocytes occurred on these organs, protecting particles from being removed with currents. -
