GREEN BELT DEVELOPMENT PLAN The potential value of vegetation in controlling air pollution has been well recognized. Trees can filter particulates and are effective pollutant sink. Vegetation also reduces noise level and regulates the oxygen balance in the area by consuming released carbon dioxide. In order to improve the aesthetic look of the area and enhance the land use as well as to compensate for any loss in ecology during construction, adequate plantation programme around the project site have been planned and will be adopted. Development of green belt will include plantation of trees along boundary of the factory, roads, raw material yard and other available spaces. The plant species will be selected on the basis of their growth and morphological characteristics (height, crown and ornamental values) and factors like availability of local species, resistance to pollutants, location of sources, plant layout, meteorological conditions, water availability etc. The proposed project will be installed on the available land of total 78.37 acres (31.73 hectares) within the existing plant premises. M/s Bravo Sponge Iron Pvt. Ltd. has earmarked 10.47 hectare of land (33% of 31.73 hectare) for Green Belt Development within its plant site at Village Mahuda, P.O. Rukni, P.S: Para, District: Purulia, West Bengal. Around 15,700 number of trees (@1500 nos. of tree per hectares) has been considered under plantation programme in greenbelt development. The species selected for such green belt development in the plant area is presented in Table-1.1. TABLE-1.1 LIST OF SELECTED TREES FOR PLANTATION TREE SPECIES COMMON NAME Pongamia pinnata Karanj Mimusops elengi Bakul Butea monosperma Palash Cassia fistula Amaltas Dalbergia sissoo Sissoo Neolamarckia cadamba Kadam Ficus benghalensis Banyan Ficus religiosa Peepal Madhuca latifolia Mahua Acacia auriculiformis Sonajhuri Moringa oleifera Drumstick Terminalia arjuna Arjun Tectona grandis Teak Mangifera indica Mango Albizia lebbeck Siris Artocarpus heterophyllus Jackfruit Cocos nucifera Coconut Polyalthia longifolia Ashoka Dendrocalamus strictus Bamboo Design of greenbelt In order to reduce the pollutant dispersion in the atmosphere, to resist the noise generated due to plant activity and to uptake the waste water generated to some extent, it is recommended to develop green belt around the periphery of the plant road side area. The total green belt area proposed to be developed is about 10.47 hectare which is about 33% of the total plot area. It is proposed to develop green belt of about 20 meter width, consisting of three tiers of trees species, around the project boundary. It also entrusted to maintain at least 75% survival rate. In addition to development of green belt within the premises the company is committed to carry out afforestation and biodiversity improvement programme in the surrounding villages. Species of tree to be used for plantation should be such that they are fast growing, strong, and pollutant resistant. The plantation should be a mix of different varieties. A three tier plantation scheme comprising of: a. Outer ring of tall, thick canopy trees. b. Middle ring of less taller trees. c. Inner core layer of tolerant species. Phase Wise Green Belt / Cover Development Plan Green belt will be developed in a phase wise manner. In the first phase plantation will be undertaken along the plant boundary, open spaces, around the proposed waste dumps, and along the major roads will be planted. In the second phase the office building area will be planted. In the third phase when all the construction activity gets completed, plantation will be taken up in the stretches under open land around the project units as well as along the roads leading to project units..
