16 DECEMBER 2013 DECEMBER 2013 17 Hear Them Roar San Diego Harley's Giant New Location

Reported by Randy Twells

As of November 23rd, the week before we have sat down to Thanksgiving dinner, a new San Diego Harley-Davidson headquarters location officially opens for business at 4645 Morena Blvd. San Diego CA 92117. This new complex is a giant facility in the old Howard Hughes Tool Co. helicopter manufacture building (built in 1937) which has been completely renovated. A significant portion of San Diego and actually American aviation history has taken place right here, and now this place will continue making history on two wheels, as we’re told it will have space for more Harley-Davidson Motorcycles than any other showroom in California.

San Diego Harley- Davidson’s three locations will now consist of two Full Service Dealerships (Morena Blvd & existing Kearny Mesa) and the Gifts & T-Shirt Shop in Seaport Village.

The San Diego Harley- Davidson Company has been family owned and operated for the past 20 years, purchased by “New York” Myke in 1993. Myke says, “We are growing, expanding and we still believe in the American dream. Harley-Davidson motorcycles are strong, tough, iconic freedom machines that symbolize the strength and resiliency of the United States of America and the American Bikers who aren’t afraid to live their dreams. Like rodeo, rock and roll and apple pie, Harley-Davidson is America! We believe in the products that we sell, in the people we sell to, in GOD and country! We look forward to seeing our old friends and meeting new ones as we continue this great adventure! Thank you, San Diego for this great opportunity!”

A few features-- the Rental Department will have over 100 motorcycles lined up along a brick alleyway decorated with a giant American Flag mural-- and the décor of this entire new facility honors all branches of the Military. The showroom floor features a Military Star emblazoned across the entire space. Reminding us of San Diego Harley’s exclusive Military Sales program for all Active and Retired Military Personnel. A 70-foot-high American Flag and a giant Harley-Davidson pole sign bearing the symbol known as the “Bar & Shield” will be visible from Interstate 5.

Other new stuff: A 20,000 sq ft Service Department, a Ride-up Service Counter, an In Store Wash Bay, an On Site Motorcycle Training Range, Multiple Customer Lounges, a Tattoo Shop and Barber Shop, a General Convenience Store, and a dedicated 5,000 sq ft Event Room furnished with a bar, pool table, pinball machine, foosball and ping pong tables. Future plans include the addition of a UFC gym. And keeping in touch with history, a replica of the original Harley-Davidson factory in Milwaukee built in 1903 will serve as one of the new store’s dressing rooms in the MotorClothing Department. To quote Bill Murray in Groundhog Day, “Let’s live here!”

San Diego Harley has a very active presence in the local community. They host countless fundraisers for charities, concerts, and biker events on a constant basis throughout the year. They have won many local community business and Motor Company awards, and this new location looks to be a great addition to San Diego’s ever-renewing business & tourism image and more than that, a campus of resources for all things Harley. Quick Throttle will keep you posted on the big Grand Opening extravaganza to take place near future so, stay tuned! For more info you can also check www.sandiegoharley.com .

Kawasaki Air Management System (KAMS) system on the Voyager was designed to reduce engine heat problems present on the V-Twin due to high temps from the exhaust and rear cylinder. The primary part of the KAMS routes radiator heat to the ground, below the engine, while the secondary part of the system draws heat away from the rear cylinder and exhaust pipe and directs it to the ground on the left side of the motorcycle. This system is particularly effective in warm weather while stopped in traffic or for extended periods of low-speed operation, such as during staging for group rides or parades. The tall windscreen married to a very aerodynamic faring provides ample wind protection. The windscreen height was perfect for my 6 foot frame.

22 DECEMBER 2013 DECEMBER 2013 23 Kicked Off With 1st Annual event! By Dana Lee Fruend

When not writing for the fabulous Quick Throttle Magazine, one of my several other jobs is as the Marketing Director for Carson City’s HorseShoe Casino, I meself was the event coordinator for this event, so you will get a first-hand account. I am very fortunate to have an amazing friend in Mineral Counties Economic Development Director Shelley Hartman, along with my husband Eddie, daughter and Photographer Kristan Fruend and even my sister Coeleen stepped in; they were my well-seasoned event staff.

The morning started beautiful and warm with a Kiwanis benefit pancake breakfast up North Carson Street at the Children’s Museum and then...it was on! The hustle and bustle of vendors, cars and bikes started filling up Telegraph and Curry Streets downtown. Food, music, amazing vendors and fun all day long. There was spicy Chorizo from Villa Basque Deli, hot dogs, burgers and tasty libations from the Horseshoe Club Casino. Boy Scouts had all kinds of specialty popcorn and wildlife photographer Vic Trujillo had a beautiful booth. Everything from clothing, jewelry, Hydro coating, Herbal Liquid Nitro, the Christian Motorcycle Association and many others offered fine shopping choices. Visitors also picked up hundreds of free magazines at the Quick Throttle display. DJ Steel keep the good vibrations going with Rock n Roll favorites and the Freaks of Nature Car Club put on a small but well-attended Show and Shine.

We had several bike games happening, the Carson City Sheriffs Office put on the “Slow Ride Races” and the Leather and Lace MC put on the “Road Kill” roundup, these beautiful women gave back all of their proceeds to the event’s charities. There was something for all ages, the Children’s Museum put on an obstacle course and bicycle Show & Shine all the little kids enjoyed, and trophies were awarded.

Some of the local media and business celebrities had fun with us too, we were fortunate to have Liz Andrews Booth of the Carson City Downtown Business Assn. and Goddess shop, Greg Pisarski of Carson Now, Kyle Horvath of Uniquely Nevada and Danielle Cook of I Love Carson City, meeting and greeting the public and sharing information.

The fabulous Carson Victory Rollers were the Superstars of the day; these derby beauties rocked selling raffle tickets as they rolled through the streets, greeting visitors all day and into the night. They even entered the “Trash Talking Trike Races” that also helped raise monies for the two charities ”Food for Thought” & “Harvest Hub” The Night came with Vendors packing up and partiers moving in to dance the night away with the tunes of a very talented band “Pray for Sun”

We could not have done this without the help of our generous sponsors, Executive Director Joel Dunn and the Carson City Visitors Bureau, Carson City Parks and Recreation, Agency 36, The Downtown Business Association, Coca-Cola, Jim Phalan & Lee Conley of High Sierra Brewery, the Carson City Sheriff’s Office, Capital Beverage, Rogue Dead Guy Beer, Wertz Distributing & Coors and of course Quick Throttle Magazine. We are very grateful to all of the Vendors who donated raffle prizes and all of the locals, bikers, car enthusiasts and businesses who came out to support this first year event. $420 was raised for the Food for Thought and Harvest Hub charities. We will see you next year, bigger and better!

The ride was sure to be spectacular!! I mean, come on, this is a Shelley Martin ride after all!! Shelley is a former Miss Arizona Bike Week, and is well known in the Phoenix valley for putting on some pretty good rides and events. Everyone’s been talking about this particular event and gearing up for it since the last one, and the date is finally here. Yes, I’m talking about the 5th annual Bikers for Boobies run! This has turned out to be one of the largest runs of the year, outside of the bike week runs. The morning was another spectacular fall, Arizona, mid- October morning. The temps were perfectly sitting in the 70’s with the sun shining brightly overhead. I pulled through the parking lot of Go Az Motorcycles, thinking I could sneak the back way into the Harley Davidson of Scottsdale (HDOS) parking lot. HA!! Yeah, right. That parking lot was already full and people were rolling in at a steady stream, parking Sturgis style in the street behind the dealership. Pink everywhere… I mean PINK!! One thing I love about the bikers here, none of us are afraid to support the cause… It’s 9 am, and I’m seeing men in pink bras and tutu’s. Pink circus clown sunglasses! Pink Afro wigs! Pink boas! Pink balloons! Pink underwear!! (The infamous, mighty Sheriff Joe Arpaio would have been proud) This place looked like a 9 year olds birthday party threw up!! You couldn’t even walk through the patio without coughing up pink feathers! The route for this ride was awesome as it worked its way through the north valley, including stops at Cocomo Joe’s, Bartlett Lake, Greasewood Flat, and ending up at the Dirty Dogg Saloon for the kick ass after party! The ride out to Bartlett Lake was breathtaking. It was an opportunity to get out of the hustle and bustle of the city traffic and just enjoy the beautiful desert scenery for about an hour or so. The peacefulness of the still lake, the serenity of the surroundings was an opportunity to just breathe and forget about the everyday drudgery of life. And even then I just had to chuckle as I was rolling along. I passed a lone pink feather in the middle of the road, and it was catapulted up into the air, only to slowly glide back down to its resting spot. Then it was onto Greasewood Flat, in North Scottsdale, for the next stop. I’ve stated before that this is one of my favorite local, just out of the way, stops. It’s a perfect venue for a bike run. There is more than ample room for hundreds of bikers. The action packed, four-day motorcycle rally delivered an abundance of activities and attractions while drawing the most skilled custom motorcycle builders for a build-off competition.

Las Vegas BikeFest 2013 offered attendees a variety of entertainment options including headline entertainment on Friday night with Grammy nominated country artist Joe Nichols, and on Saturday night with classic rockers, Foghat and Blue Oyster Cult. Both concerts were held in the vendor village area at Cashman Center. In addition to the concerts, attendees had the opportunity to explore over 200 vendor booths filled with motorcycles, parts, accessories, apparel and more.

“As was true with past years, Las Vegas BikeFest 2013 delivered on its promise of an action-packed weekend that kept guests entertained with a wide variety of activities, and showcased the most innovative and cutting edge aspects of bike building,” said Mindi Cherry, Event Manager for Las Vegas BikeFest. “There are only a few places where you can immerse yourself in the excitement and uniqueness of this culture. Las Vegas BikeFest is one of them, which makes it the coolest place to be in the desert.”

The highlight of the event was the 10th Annual Artistry in Iron, Master Builders’ Championship. Artistry in Iron, the peer-judged, invitation-only custom bike building competition, featured some of the most innovative custom bike building BikeFest has seen yet. Sponsored by Cycle Source Magazine, 18 of today’s hottest builders gathered from all corners of the U.S. and Canada to show off their artistry talents as they unveiled their new designs. On Saturday night, Rick Bray of RKB Kustom Speed in Hanford, CA took home the top prize. Along with winning $10,000, Bray took home the respect of his peers who voted his bike into the winners circle. He will also receive a feature article in Cycle Source Magazine. Ron Harris of Chop Docs Choppers took home the People’s Choice Award. In addition, sponsored by the Broken Spoke Saloon, editors from eight of the top motorcycle publications were present to select their choice of top builder and awarded them with a trophy and feature article.

Attendees enjoyed a full weekend of entertainment options including demo rides from Indian, Victory and Yamaha; the always unpredictable Mr. and Miss Las Vegas BikeFest Competitions; a $10,000 Poker Run; Tattoo Contest; World’s Strongest Biker Competition; Bike Games; Custom Bike Show and more.

Plans for the 2014 Las Vegas BikeFest are already in the works, with the dates for the event set for October 2-5.

28 DECEMBER 2013 DECEMBER 2013 29 The month of September was another wild ride… I headed to Salt Lake City for the “12th Annual Operation Christmas Child Rally”.

This rally has been held every year by Pastor Terry and Alison Long and their Calvary Chapel of Salt Lake City church.

Hundreds of riders attend, as they raise much needed funds – to fill shoe boxes that are packed with a LOT of love and, toys, hygiene products, school supplies, and more. These items bless children in 3rd world countries as well as some needy kids in U.S. cities.

The church packs literally thousands of shoe boxes every year that are distributed by Samaritan’s Purse – that is led by Franklin Graham (the son of famous evangelist Billy Graham). They share in the blessing of touching the lives of thousands of little kids around the world.

The BFC Full Throttle Band was invited to provide the weekend’s entertainment for the rally, as well as leading worship and special music for blues, and rock n’ roll. Finally when this little the church services on Sunday. red-haired, Holy Spirit – and caffeine inspired, psycho-pastor dude hit the stage and shared Saturday started off with a really beautiful ride the morning message… it was obvious the through the foothills around Salt Lake. 34 DECEMBER 2013 DECEMBER 2013 35 Hello there. My name is Heather Rowe. I recently read your ar- ticle about speedway as it included a small mention of sidecars. I’ve been on the side of a sidecar more than a few times and in fact have the first all-girl team starting in April :-) A few of us would like you to know what a monkey’s job is (the sidecar “passenger”) and it’s much more than a “skid plate” as you called it. The monkeys job is not just to balance the bike, but to transfer weight from forward, allowing the bike to turn but also back to put weight on the back tire to pull the bike out straight as not to go into the wall - but also out to move the back or tuck up into the “tray” to keep the bike where it’s at.... To say timing is important is an understatement as also knowing your driver AND how the bike handles in different circumstances to SO important! Also, there is no brakes and on a small track such as Costa Mesa these things are vital to not getting run up on!

There’s only about 15 of these bikes in California and we just don’t get a lot of well deserved publicity. We don’t make money so we really do it for the love of it and the people that love it.

My all-girl team means just - all mechanics, Rachel, my pit girl Su- sana, my monkey, Michelle (Ducky) and me, Heather (hooker) - it’s the first time EVER an all girl team has existed in this sport. My hubby Jeff Rowe races too - one pic here is of him riding with me driving - he’s doing what they call “throwing leg” - it acts as a rudder but is extremely dangerous. Thanks QT!
