Minkey – "Hi" from Our CoOrdinator Hi all, To formally introduce me in a nutshell: I’m currently in my third year of University studying a Bachelor of Sport and Recreation Management, and as well as this, my life also consists of juggling numerous sports, a boyfriend, and my love hate relationship with the gym… I’m very sport orientated, having played most big named sports there is to name and yet, never once in my life have I picked up a hockey stick nor watched more than 1 minute of a game. So, it’s very ironic to be in this position right now – writing an article for a Hockey Club newsletter! I showed interest in the role of Minkey Coordinator purely due to my passion for Sport and recreation, and willingness to learn more about this wonderful game. And it turned out to be a fantastic decision! So we’re halfway through our Minkey Season already… Am I the only one who thinks every year goes faster than the last?! For my first year in the position of Minkey Coordinator I’ve had a lot of fun (maybe that’s why it’s gone fast – "time flies when you’re having fun?!") organizing schools, umpires and the fields each week. It’s great to see the kids out there every Friday night eager to play, and then grabbing a hot chocolate from the Wicked Coffee van, to warm their frostbite fingers! This year there’s a total of 13 schools involved, playing in both Minkey and Half Field Competitions. Of these schools, there are 14 teams in the half field competition, 6 in the Minkey A competition, and 7 in the Minkey B. Very impressively, there is a whopping 23 umpires signed up for the season, all of which are experienced and lovely young people making the game fun, safe and consistent for everyone involved. The feedback I’ve received has been that the kids are having a ball, and funnily enough I’ve also learnt a lot about gumboots and why they’re so incredible come Winter sport time… I know a few schools have expressed their eagerness for the second half to start back up again on the 29th; I take this as a good sign. See some of you back out there at the end of the month, and I look forward to getting back into it! Regards, Micaela Worner Christmas in July Have you got your ticket yet? History Night, Saturday June 18th A group of about 25 current and life Members together with some very special friends of Adelaide Hockey Club enjoyed a wonderful evening of nostalgia, with Chook providing a very entertaining presentation of Adelaide Hockey Club over the years. Many of us have also enjoyed the nostalgia display in the Club Rooms during the week following this event. The wooden hockey sticks have been a real talking point with the kids! Thankyou to everybody who contributed to this event. It was humbling to see the long and proud history of AHC and we look forward to continuing this as an annual event. Season 2016 Junior Team Photos We have partnered with our new sponsor, BRAND SPORTS, to take Junior Team and Junior player photos this year. It is proposed that photos will be taken at the following training times, so kids will be asked to wear their uniforms on these nights – Tuesday 9th August – U18 Men Wednesday 10th August – U11 and U9 Mixed Thursday 11th August – U14 Men Monday 15th August – U18 and U14 Women Confirmation of these dates, and reminders about uniform will be sent closer to the dates. Spot the difference … Look carefully at these 2 photos, and see if you can pick the players common to both – the 2007 Metro Grass Premiership team and the 2014 Metro Grass Premiership team. With such a long, proud history in the Metro Grass competition, we were very disappointed that it did not continue this season. With regular playing times and lower playing fees, it provided a valuable alternative to the turf competition for those with busy weekends and other commitments. Rather than not playing at all, our Metro Grass team elected to shift across to the M5 turf competition for Season 2016 and after 11 rounds, they are sitting third on the ladder (behind Adelaide’s other M5 team and Port Adelaide). Some of these girls were playing in the same team 33 years ago! 2007 - Back Row, L to R: Di Foster, Nicki Le Poidevin, Sally Downard, Anne Collins (partly obscured), Tracey Doherty, Marg Holder, Bev McEgan, Sue Lee, Gail Seddon, Anne Tonkin, Sue Paull Front Row, L to R: Karin Hatch, Ali Esselbach, Jo Hawkes, Lisa Williams 2014 - Back Row, L to R: Bernadette Richards, Janet Scott, Sue Lee (Life Member), Anne Collins, Lisa Williams, Julie Holliday, Jo Hawkes Front Row, L to R: Rebekah Ryan, Bev McEgan (Life Member), Lynne Foster (partly obscured), Sally Downard, Ali Esselbach, Siobhan Hicks, Sue Paull, Karin Hatch, Sarah Hill. Absent: Marg Holder Facilities Update The recent upgrade to lighting involved the installation of 4 new lamps on each of the corner posts. We now have 500lux in a few spots with each of the circles, previously we were lucky to have 250lux. The new lighting has made the central third of the pitch look a tad dark in comparison. Future upgrades will involved the installation of 4 new lamps in each of the four central towers. Total cost of the recent upgrade was $37,200 and was partly funded by grant money from the Adelaide City Council. The synthetic surface at Pea Park was laid in 2008 and was expected to last 10-15years. Due to the high use the initial 25mm thickness is down to 7mm in some places and repairs are now getting more frequent and more common. The Adelaide Hockey-Tennis Seniors-Pulteney Grammar consortium have applied for grant funding to assist in the replacement with a surface approved by both the International Tennis Federation and the Federation International Hockey (its still green). Total cost of this project is $370,000. We find out if we were successful on 31July 2016 and if we are then installation will be completed by 1 November 2016. Watch this space! The 2017 season we are looking at getting an electronic scoreboard, grandstand seating and shelters. Many thanks to all those who recently donated funds towards these projects. Pea Park Facilities Upgrade Project Thankyou to everybody who has very generously donated to this project. With $3,500 raised, we are well on the way to being able to purchase a digital scoreboard for Season 2017.
