National Treasure: The Book of Secrets (2007) The main article: National Treasure: The Book of Secrets In the sequel to the original 2004 film, black market dealer Mitch Wilkinson finds one of the 18 missing pages of John Wilkes Booth's diary and suggests that Ben's ancestor, Thomas Gates, was a conspirator in the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln, so Ben lays out his innocence by going to prove his innocence by going to the current U.S. president. Future National Treasure 3 In December 2007, before the second film was released, Nicolas Cage showed interest in making a third film, believing that it should be more international. In early 2008, Disney registered domains for NationalTreasure3DVD.com and NationalTreasure4DVD.com (both sites are not currently registered the second link redirects). In May 2008, director and producer John Turteltaub announced that the film company would not be working on another sequel to National Treasure. In September 2008, producer Jerry Bruckheimer officially confirmed that they were in the process of developing a third film, and in November of that year, Bruckheimer said that the writers were in the process of writing the script for the film. In May 2010, Bruckheimer said that the first draft of the script had been completed. In an interview in February 2012, Cage said, I haven't heard any news about the third at this time, and it would be interesting to take The National Treasure to South America. In May 2013, Justin Barta stated that a third part was still possible and that the scripts were written. In April 2014, Bruckheimer stated that the first act of National Treasure 3 was complete and exciting. In March 2016, The Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Iger answered a question about the third film by saying, We made two, and yes, they were really great movies. I know Jerry Bruckheimer who prepared them had conversations with our studio several times about it, and there have been some developments along the way, but at this point we are not green light as we say National Treasure 3. But I know that there is time and some resources spent on development. In May 2016, Nicolas Cage confirmed that the film was still in the process of being written. In September 2017, Jerry Bruckheimer admitted that the script was already finished, but Disney wasn't happy with the story. In July 2018, Turtletaub repeated that the script for a possible third film was close, but Disney has not yet been fully sold out on the idea. In January 2020, Chris Bremner, the writer of for Life, wrote a new screenplay for him. In May 2020, Bruckheimer stated that the film had been written, and it was hoped that the original cast from previous films would return. The book was not the novelization of the first film, but the butlization of the second under the title National Treasure 2: The Book of Secrets - The Younger Novel was released on November 6, 2007. Parts of the story in the new version are slightly different from what was actually filmed, due to changes made to the script before and during production. For example, in the novel, Ben and Abigail photographed a wooden panel board hidden in the queen's Resolute desk at Buckingham Palace (a corresponding gift from the wood of a British Royal Navy warship in 1850 and an Arctic explorer to the American president at the White House in the 1870s) and left it behind, chasing a car, but in the film, they take the board with them. In addition, the date on the statue in Paris, which is also a combination to access the board table is shown as 1865, not 1876. Gate Mystery Disney Press has also published a series of spin-off historical novels about the ancestors of the Gates family, all by Katherine Hapka. Characters Of the National Treasure Movie National Treasure: Book of Secrets 2004 2007 Benjamin Franklin Ben Gates Nicolas Cage Riley Pool Justin Bart Dr. Abigail Chase Diana Kruger Patrick Patrick Henry Gates John Ouit Agent Peter Sandusky Harvey Keitel Agent Hendrix Armando Riesco Jan Howe Bean Thomas Gates Jason Jason Joel Gretch John Adams Gates Christopher Plummer Dr Emily Appleton Helen Mirren Mitch Wilkinson Ed Harris Benjamin Franklin Ben Gates (as Nicolas Cage) - Benjamin Gates is the main character of the films. Ben has heard stories about the Treasure Templars from his grandfather ever since he was a small child, and decides to hunt him himself. Together with Ian Howe and Riley Poole, Ben discovers Charlotte, which leads him to the next key in the treasure hunt. After he was betrayed by Jan, he intends to steal the Declaration of Independence. As the search progresses, Ben meets and eventually falls in love with Abigail Chase. He argues with his father, who does not believe in the treasure, after 20 ungrateful years of searching for it himself. However, Ben successfully discovers the treasures. In National Treasure: The Book of Secrets, his surname is threatened by Mitch Wilkinson, and he hunts for the legendary Seven Cities of Gold. He and Abigail separated, but were reunited during a treasure hunt. During this journey, Ben must kidnap the President of the United States (Bruce Greenwood) to find the key in the president's book of secrets. Ben has a degree in American History (from Georgetown University) and Mechanical Engineering (from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology), and is a ROTC-commissioned Navy diving officer. Ben portrayed Hunter Gomez at the beginning of the first film. Riley Poole (played by Justin Barta) as Riley Poole is Ben Gates' best friend and one of the Templar Treasures and Gold Cities. Ben and his financier Ian Howe find Riley working in the cabin. He comes along on a journey to find Charlotte, using his computer experience to help his friends. He is writing a book about the treasure of the Templars and other myths, and this book becomes the key to helping find the city of gold in the second film. He begins to have financial problems in the second film, and his Ferrari is confiscated by the IRS for parking in the tow zone while he autographs copies of his book at the border. However, his car returns to him after the discovery of the city of gold. In both films he is portrayed as a comic relief group, and regularly responds with sarcastic jokes. He is very excited when he finally knows something Ben is not doing. Abigail Chase (pictured diane Kruger) - Abigail Chase is a German-american german from the National Archives in Washington, D.C., a friend of Benjamin Gates. They meet during Ben's hunt for the Templar treasure when Ben arrives to warn the archives of Ian Howe's plan to steal the Declaration of Independence. When Abigail is brought to hunt, she first against help, trying to escape with the Declaration. However, she begins to trust Ben, and they quickly fall in love. She's playing. starring in a treasure hunt, and at the end of the first film she and Ben moved in together. At the beginning of the second film, he and Ben broke up, and she meets with Connor, the curator of the White House. She's on a date with Connor when Ben tries to steal her ID pass for the Library of Congress to view a page from John Wilkes Booth's diary. She and Ben argue, but when she learns of Ben's mission to find the Lost City of Gold, she decides to reunite with him and Riley in a treasure hunt. They start to make up for the movie, and soon the couple again. Patrick Henry Gates as John Meter as Patrick Henry Gates as the father of Benjamin Gates, named after Patrick Henry. At first, he does not believe in treasure, thinking that the evidence will simply lead to other evidence, not treasure. It turned out that he himself had been looking for the treasure for 20 years and never found it, so he came to believe that the treasure was a hoax. He thinks it's a waste of time to look for treasure, and he's dismayed when he discovers that Ben has stolen the Declaration of Independence. He is taken hostage by Ian and is present when they discover the treasure. In the Book of Secrets, Patrick is outraged by Mitch Wilkinson when he goes to the page of Booth's diary, which seems to show that Thomas Gates was involved in the death of President Lincoln. He is then discouraged by the fact that they have no proof that Wilkinson is lying. When Ben and Riley are in London, Patrick is attacked by the Wilkinson, who clone his cell phone to gain access to Ben's progress. In this film, Patrick reunites with his ex-wife Emily Appleton. They have to team up to save their son, and it seems that they are back together by the end of the film. The two met in search of treasures of their own and the treasure hunt for Cibola seems to make them remember their love for each other and finally reconcile. Patrick is named one of the co-founders of the City of Gold. Agent Peter Saduski (pictured with Harvey Keitel) - Agent Peter Saduski is an FBI agent (presumably high rank) who first meets treasure hunters when he is assigned to the case after the declaration of independence stolen. He searches for Ben all night before finally finding him and taking him into custody in Philadelphia. Ben escapes from him in New York, but Saduski returns to receive the Declaration. He doesn't seem to believe in the history of the treasure at first, but actually seems to know it pretty well when shown that he is a Freemason. Saduski arrests Ian Howe at the end of the film. In the Book of Secrets, he is introduced when some of his agents come out with a newspaper article about Booth's diary page. He is suspicious of Wilkinson and begins to sat the pieces together. Later, he's hot on Ben's trail again when Ben kidnaps the president United States. He also reveals that he knows more than he allows about things: he confirms the existence of the Book of Secrets to Ben, but claims that he does not know its whereabouts. Upon learning that Ben had kidnapped the president, he apparently guesses what it was for, and goes straight to the Library of Congress, showing that he somehow apparently knew this place all along. He follows him to Mount Rushmore, only to lose it until after the opening of Cibola. Ian Howe as Sean Bean as Ian Howe as Ben's former partner and former financier and chief antagonist in the first film. He comes with Ben and Riley in the Arctic in search of Charlotte. Ian and Ben have a brief face-to- face, after Ian becomes frustrated that Ben doesn't want to help steal and run a chemical test on the Declaration of Independence with him, and the faceoff ends with a ship exploding. Ian and one of the accompanying men run off the ship before the explosion and, probably suggesting that Ben and Riley are dead, leave. On the night of the 70th anniversary gala at the National Archives, Ian and his men break in, only to find that Ben beat them in the Declaration. (Ben stole it to protect him from Ian, fearing that Ian would not treat him with respect and might even destroy the document). Ian and his men then follow him out of the building and a car chase ensues. Ian then travels to Philadelphia, where he pursues Abigail and Riley and eventually steals the Declaration from them. After Ben was arrested by the FBI, Ian helps him escape from custody, and then meets him at Trinity Church in New York, where it turned out that Ian kidnapped Patrick to Ben to take him to church. He follows Ben down into the tunnels under the church, where one of his men dies after falling through rotting floorboards. The group finds itself at a standstill, and Patrick makes a key about the lantern, and this leads to the Old North Church in Boston, and he keeps the Treasure of the Templars. Ian eventually leaves, deserting the others. Ian and his remaining men are finally detained in Boston while trying to break into a church and are charged with kidnapping, attempted murder and assault on public property. Mitch Wilkinson as Ed Harris as Mitch Wilkinson is the main antagonist of the second film. Wilkinson first appears when Ben and Patrick give a speech, showing a page from John Wilkes Booth's diary, which says the name Thomas Gates. He says he believes this means Gates was the conspirator in Lincoln's murder. Wilkinson is a direct descendant of Confederate General (and Mason) Albert Pike and has a letter from the queen Pike that gives the key to Cibola. Wilkinson and his brothers look after Ben and his friends as they search for clues. He eavesdrops on Ben mentioning the Statue of Liberty Abigail's conversation, and eventually going to New York, only to find that it's the wrong statue. Before that, however, Mitch and his brothers break into Patrick's house and clone his cell phone, using this advantage to track Ben and listen to his conversations with his father. He and his two brothers follow treasure hunters to London, where he chases them and receives a board from the Resolute table at Buckingham Palace. Wilkinson then returns to the United States, where he learns that Ben's mother, Emily, is able to translate Indian boards. He goes to her and then kidnaps her after she translates the board, taking her to Mount Rushmore, where they meet the rest of the group. They all head to the caves under the mountain, and Wilkinson threatens to kill people to keep them going. His true motives are revealed: he wanted his family to finally gain some notoriety for discovering something and smeared the name of Thomas Gates to get Ben involved in the treasure hunt, though he would later apologize to Ben after they found the city of gold and when Thomas Gates' innocence proved. Eventually, as the cave is filled with water, Mitch lets Ben and others escape and drown in the flooded city of gold. Initially he forced Ben to stay so he could live, but he stays instead, and his last request is that Ben give him credit for the discovery. Despite the fact that Mitch died, he will be given partial responsibility for the discovery of the treasure at the insistence of Ben. Emily Appleton-Gates as Helen Mirren as Emily Appleton-Gates as Ben Gates' British mother and ex-wife Patrick. She is a professor at the University of Maryland and has extensive knowledge of Native American history. She is, however, extremely unpopular with her students. She met Patrick during a treasure hunt, but a mobile incident forced them to part and not speak for 32 years. When Patrick arrives, she's less than happy to see him. She translates the board that Ben and his friends find at Buckingham Palace, leading them to search for the other half of the board. Patrick sets out to transfer it, although Mitch Wilkinson gets to her first, forcing her to lie to Patrick before she is kidnapped. Patrick tries to clear the air a little between them, but she blows him off to protect him, though she slips into a hint about what's really going on that he and Ben decipher. At Mount Rushmore, he and Patrick are separated from others in a cave, and it becomes apparent that Patrick and Emily are in love again. Thomas Gates (played by Jason Earls in the first film, in the second as Joel Gretch) as Thomas Gates as the father of Charles Carroll Gates. Thomas starred in both films. Thomas lived in Washington, D.C. In 1832, Charles Carroll told Thomas the story of the Templar Treasure and gave him the last remaining Find it: The secret lies with Charlotte. In 1848, Thomas was still trying to figure out the key that had been given to him. At this time, his brother James follows a series of letters that their aunt sent to his father, believing that it leads to a treasure larger than the gold of California. Thomas became known for his ability to solve puzzles. Just five days after the end of the Civil War, he encounters John Wilkes Booth and another member of the K.G.C. They present him with a cipher, and he immediately begins to decode it. Booth leaves and continues his plans to kill Lincoln. Soon after, Thomas learns that the people who approached him were members of the K.G.C., and he stops decoding the cipher. The man sniffed out the gun and urged him to continue deciphering the code. Suddenly you hear the news of Lincoln's murder, and people in the bar are forced to leave. The man continues to urge Thomas to finish deciphering the code. When a person is distracted by the sound of a window bursting, Thomas pulls out a page containing a cipher and throws it into the fireplace, trying to burn it. The man, realizing what happened, shoots At Thomas and pulls out the remains of the page, and then runs away. Thomas remains dead there, with his son Charles. His last words to Charles are the debt that all men pay... John Adams Gates (as Christopher Plummer in the first film) as John Adams Gates as Patrick's father. He explains the treasure to his grandson Ben. Charles Carroll Gates as Charles Carroll Gates is the son of Thomas Gates. He witnessed the murder of his father on April 14, 1865, and told the story to his grandson Patrick Gates, who used this information to help locate the treasure. Charles is the main character in the novel, Forever Free, where he is friends with a freed slave. Adam Benjamin Gates as Adam Benjamin Gates as son of John Raleigh Gates.
