Future National Treasure 3 In December 2007, before the second film was released, Nicolas Cage showed interest in making a third film, believing that it should be more international. In early 2008, Disney registered domains for NationalTreasure3DVD.com and NationalTreasure4DVD.com (both sites are not currently registered the second link redirects). In May 2008, director and producer John Turteltaub announced that the film company would not be working on another sequel to National Treasure. In September 2008, producer Jerry Bruckheimer officially confirmed that they were in the process of developing a third film, and in November of that year, Bruckheimer said that the writers were in the process of writing the script for the film. In May 2010, Bruckheimer said that the first draft of the script had been completed. In an interview in February 2012, Cage said, I haven't heard any news about the third at this time, and it would be interesting to take The National Treasure to South America. In May 2013, Justin Barta stated that a third part was still possible and that the scripts were written. In April 2014, Bruckheimer stated that the first act of National Treasure 3 was complete and exciting. In March 2016, The Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Iger answered a question about the third film by saying, We made two, and yes, they were really great movies. I know Jerry Bruckheimer who prepared them had conversations with our studio several times about it, and there have been some developments along the way, but at this point we are not green light as we say National Treasure 3. But I know that there is time and some resources spent on development. In May 2016, Nicolas Cage confirmed that the film was still in the process of being written. In September 2017, Jerry Bruckheimer admitted that the script was already finished, but Disney wasn't happy with the story. In July 2018, Turtletaub repeated that the script for a possible third film was close, but Disney has not yet been fully sold out on the idea. In January 2020, Chris Bremner, the writer of Bad Boys for Life, wrote a new screenplay for him. In May 2020, Bruckheimer stated that the film had been written, and it was hoped that the original cast from previous films would return. The book was not the novelization of the first film, but the butlization of the second under the title National Treasure 2: The Book of Secrets - The Younger Novel was released on November 6, 2007. Parts of the story in the new version are slightly different from what was actually filmed, due to changes made to the script before and during production. For example, in the novel, Ben and Abigail photographed a wooden panel board hidden in the queen's Resolute desk at Buckingham Palace (a corresponding gift from the wood of a British Royal Navy warship in 1850 and an Arctic explorer to the American president at the White House in the 1870s) and left it behind, chasing a car, but in the film, they take the board with them. In addition, the date on the statue in Paris, which is also a combination to access the board table is shown as 1865, not 1876. Gate Mystery Disney Press has also published a series of spin-off historical novels about the ancestors of the Gates family, all by Katherine Hapka.
