Summer Reading for students entering Kindergarten is recommended, but not required. No grades will be given to kindergarten students. Students entering 1st Grade through 5th Grade this fall should read 3 books that fall within their Lexile range, from 100 points below to 50 points above their Lexile score. The Lexile score is found on the MAP reports, which were sent home to parents. Students entering 1st grade through 4th grade may read a minimum of 5 stories on the Amira platform, instead or in addition to other reading. Students are strongly encouraged to read at least one piece of informational (non-fiction) text over the summer. Georgia standards place a strong emphasis on informational text as students are prepared for success in college and career reading.
Note: If your child’s Lexile score exceeds that of the Grade Level Lexile Band, then he or she should read texts either within his or her Lexile range, or within the appropriate Grade Level Lexile Band as outlined here. A Lexile measure is a good starting point for selecting books but should never be the only factor.
While Summer Reading is not mandatory, students are highly encouraged to read throughout the summer.

2019-2020 SCCPSS Secondary 6-12 Summer Reading Program
Why summer reading? While reading during summer vacation may not be a priority for most high school students, it is critical to a student’s ability to not only retain information learned the previous year but also to grow in knowledge and literacy skills to prepare for the year ahead. Many experts liken reading to exercise. Just like exercising keeps your heart and muscles in shape, so too does reading keep your brain in shape. If you don’t exercise - you lose muscle. If you don’t read - you lose literacy skills.
A study done at the University of Tennessee found that children and teens who did not read over the summer lose the equivalent of two months of literacy development, while students who read gained a month. Because of this, when school begins in the fall there is likely to be a three-month difference in literacy readiness between those who read over the summer and those who didn’t - an unfortunate fact known as the “summer slide.”
Reading over the summer is not a suggestion to keep kids busy; It is a critical requirement to help students stay on track for their entire educational career and beyond.
Program Overview: Students are expected to read or listen to between 2-5 books over the summer. While SCCPSS provides a list of recommended texts and their associated Lexile levels, it is most important that students select books that interest them. Students should aim to select books close to their instructional level.

Students may submit an electronic or hard copy summary and personal reflection for each book read by August 31, 2020. (See pages and for reflection page or links to submissions.)
In each electronic submission, students will use a Google form to submit a two-paragraph summary of their book and a two-paragraph reflection of their thoughts, feelings, connections made, and/or analysis of author’s craft and purpose. Each school’s English department will review all student entries.

Scholastic This is an excellent FREE reading resource website. When students log reading time they can unlock virtual rewards. Sign up your kids to log the hours they read over the summer from Saturday, May 4th until Friday, September 4th, 2020. There are several suggested reading book lists too.

23 Savannah Chatham County Public School System 6-12 Summer Learning Adventure Calendar Purpose: This Summer Learning Adventure Calendar provides enrichment activities for students to keep them engaged in meaningful, enjoyable learning activities for the summer. While the activities are not mandatory, we highly encourage you to take advantage of these learning adventures throughout the summer. You are sure to learn something new every day! Directions: • Complete the Activity of the Day and the corresponding activity • Create a record of your summer learning throughout the month. Possible options include: o Make a slide presentation of pictures using PowerPoint or Google Slides o Write and sing a song teaching someone what you learned o Create a digital photo album of your summer learning adventures o Keep a log or journal of your summer learning o Create a collage depicting your summer learning adventure
