This book is like a supermarket cart after a twenty-minute journey around the aisles: brimming with all manner of assorted products, some essential, others minor extravagancies, but all of which will get used at some point. Like the consumables from the supermarket, the contents of this book will not be enough to get the shopper through the whole week, and visits to other, more specialist stores will be needed. But there will be enough staples to get started, and many of the goods will be kept in the fridge and used at a later stage. Purpose The purpose of the book is quite simple: to provide a working A–Z of the key concepts in sport and exercise psychology. Why working? Because this reference source is not intended to sit on a bookshelf waiting in abeyance to be consulted every so often. It’s meant to be carried around in a bag or a case, consulted daily, scrawled with handwritten notes and daubed with highlighter. Within six months of purchase, it should be dog-eared, battered and plastered with those Post-it index stickers. In other words, it’s meant to earn its keep. Organization The shopping-cart metaphor works to an extent, though, of course, no one insists on arranging their goods on the check-out belt in alphabetical order: apples, aromatic candles, avocadoes, beer, burgers, and so on. Since this is a reference book, the alphabet offers a logical system of organizing the material, though this isn’t quite as straight- forward as it seems. For example, where does ‘‘EXERCISE IDENTITY’’ go? Under ‘‘E,’’ or under ‘‘IDENTITY,’’ with a subhead exercise?Or drugs? Should it be dope, DOPING, or even performance-enhancing x INTRODUCTION drugs? And how about state anxiety? (Terms in SMALL CAPITALS have an entry of their own

  • Social Loafing: a Review of the Literature
Social Loafing: A Review of the Literature Ashley Simms Texas Wesleyan University Tommy Nichols Texas Wesleyan University Social loafing is a phenomenon that has been discussed and researched since 1913. Though it has been long examined, recent technological developments offer ample opportunity for further study. This paper summarizes its long history of research and offers several propositions for future research. INTRODUCTION In 1913 a phenomenon was found that, at the time, did not receive sufficient attention. Maximilien Ringelmann, a French agricultural engineer, observed that when a group of people collectively pulled on a rope, the output was less than when group members individually pulled on the rope (Kravitz and Martin, 1986; Ringelmann, 1913). The results of this finding were not considered further until 1974 when Ingham, Levinger, Graves, and Peckham recreated the experiment. The term “social loafing” was coined for the discovery that participants working in groups exert less effort than participants working individually. It was described as having a detrimental effect on individuals and the institutions associated with them (Latane, Williams, & Harkins, 1979). From there, the research evolved into five distinct categories: 1) establishing the existence of social loafing in both physical and cognitive group projects, 2) causes and deterrents of social loafing, 3) partner adaptation to group member social loafing (such as the “Sucker Effect”), 4) social loafing as a positive mechanism, and finally 5) social loafing in modern technology. ESTABLISHING SOCIAL LOAFING EXISTS The origins of social loafing begin with “The Ringelmann Effect,” which describes the tendency for individuals to lower their productivity when in a group (Ringlemann, 1913); Ingham, Levinger, Graves and Peckham relabeled this effect “social loafing” when they were successful in demonstrating individual effort declines in a curvilinear fashion when people work as a group or only believe they are working in a group (Ingham, Levinger, Graves, & Peckham, 1974).

  • Roger Federer on Suc...T the French Open
ON TENNIS Steady as He Goes: Roger Federer on Success, Staying Power and 20 Years at the French Open By Christopher Clarey May 24, 2019 CHUR, Switzerland — Roger Federer had just finished his soup and was dubious. “Come on!” he said. “Nobody else left?” No, not a soul. Of the 128 players who took part in the 1999 French Open singles tournament, Federer is the last one still playing singles on tour. That French Open was Federer’s first Grand Slam event. He was 17 years old, wore a ball cap backward on court and still had difficulty keeping his temper in check. Even though he was Swiss, not French, and had lost in the first round of the junior event the year before, the French tournament officials had decided, after considerable debate, to give him a precious wild card into the main draw based on his clear potential. His opponent on May 25, 1999, was Patrick Rafter, the net‑rushing Australian then ranked No. 3 in the world. Though Federer did come out swinging and win the first set, he struggled to win games after that, losing, 5‑7, 6‑3, 6‑0, 6‑2, in the sunshine on Court Suzanne Lenglen. “After the first set, he got the hang of how I play and he, like, sliced and diced me,” Federer said in an interview last month. Roger Federer during his debut at the French Open in 1999, when he lost to Patrick Rafter as a 17‑year‑old wild card. Clive Brunskill/Allsport I was one of about 10,000 in attendance that afternoon 20 years ago, and though many of the courts used in 1999 at the French Open no longer exist, Lenglen still stands.
