Corresponding author: A. Nur Asma, [email protected] Abstract. Malaysia possessed two species of Tenualosa sp.; the Tenualosa toli and Tenualosa macrura, which can only be found in Sarawak. Recently, samples that resembled the Tenualosa sp. were found in Perak River of Peninsular Malaysia. The absence of comprehensive study of Tenualosa sp. in Peninsular Malaysia had urged this study to be conducted to authenticate the samples found. Identification were done using morphological analysis with the integration of molecular assessment using partial genes of cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (CO1) and 16S rRNA. Morphological analysis of 40 samples showed the closest correlation with Tenualosa ilisha (Hamilton, 1822). However, variations were found in meristic counts and the samples were differentiated into two groups. The meristic counts also overlapped with other species of the same genus. Molecular assessments on 10 samples performed using partial CO1 and 16S rRNA genes had obtained 500-bp and 573-bp sequences respectively, that has high similarity with T. -

Morphometric, Hilsa populations of different rivers are distinct and may be distinguished Meristic, from one another by morphometric, serological and meristic characters. There Phylogenetic, is controversy regarding stocks or races of Hilsa in different water bodies of Allozyme, Bangladesh. Genetic and otolith data both showed that Hilsa from India Single stock Myanmar were not significantly different from the fish collected from coastal areas of Bangladesh, and suggest that fresh water environment of the River systems for breeding and thereafter, nourishment of the young ones. Most of the stocks of Hilsa are anadromous, breeding much above tidal limits. Some stocks have also been reported to remain permanently in the freshwater stretch of Rivers. The Hilsa shad is largely an anadromous species, but two other ecotypes - a fluvial potamodromous type and a marine type - have been recognised. The possibility of existence of different races of Hilsa was expressed by many workers. Some studies indicated that Hilsa populations of different rivers are distinct and may be distinguished from one another by mo Hilsa in the Bay of Bengal were a single stock. -

Hilsa (part): virtually all authors included the species of Tenualosa in Hilsa until the latter was recently restricted to H. kelee by Wongratana (1983:385). l Diagnostic Features : Moderate or large herring-like fishes (to 50 cm standard length in one species), moderately elongate but compressed, with a keel of scutes along belly. Top of head without numerous longitudinal striae (fronto-parietal striae); upper jaw with a distinct median notch. Gillrakers fine and numerous, those on the inner arches more or less straight, not curled outward. Pelvic finrays i 7; anal fin / \ short, well behind dorsal fin base. Scales moderate, 37 to 47 in lateral series, hind part without perforations. Khamees 2Department of Fisheries and Marine Resources, College of Agriculture, University of Basrah, Basrah, Iraq *Corresponding author: [email protected] Abstract: Reviewing the literature dealt with marine fishes of Iraq, which were captured in territorial marine waters of Iraq or brackish, freshwaters and marshes, from 1874 until the mid of 2018 indicated the presence of 322 species belonging to 193 genera, 94 families and 26 orders. Perciformes is the richest order, represented with 183 species (about 56.83% of all fish species), 97 genera and 38 families. Among these, 40 (42.5%) different families are represented with a single species. The Carangidae has the higher number of genera (17) and species (33). Ten out of 26 orders (38.5%) have been represented with single species only. Elasmobranchs are represented with 42 species (23 selachids and 19 batoids). Locally, the sharks (selachids) comprise three orders and eight families, while the skates and the rays (batoids) are represented with seven families and four orders. A total of 193 of confirmed marine species (66 families and 18 orders) were recorded from Shatt Al- Arab river. Keywords: Marine fishes, Shatt Al-Arab river, Shatt Al-Basrah canal, checklists, Iraq. T. toli Spawn in the middle reaches of estuaries and females deposit all their eggs at once while T. macrura spawn throughout the year in Sumatra but in Sarawak have a seasonal peak in the NE monsoon (December). The smaller sized T. ilisha are almost all males, a few small functionally female fish are present in Bangladesh water body. Male sex ratio of T. ilisha is less than female sex ratio (1:5.09). (Cyclopoida: Taeniacanthidae) is described based on adult female specimens collected from the gills of hilsa shad, Tenualosa ilisha (Hamilton, 1822) (Actinopterygii: Clupeidae) captured off Iraq. The new species differs from its congeners by having the following combination of characters in the adult female: 1) the rostral area sclerotised; 2) the presence of row of spinules on the proximal and distal margins of the anal somite; 3) the maxilliped claw with 2 long whip-like setae just crossing the distal edge of claw with serrated terminal margin; and 4) the leg 5 ornamented with patched spinules distally. This is the ninth nominal species of Anchistrotos Brian, 1906.
