17. Community services: Almost all the department of Kirti College are active in community services. Some of the noteworthy programmes conducted this year by NSS department are as follows:

• Peace Rally was conducted on 6th August by Mumbai Sarvodaya

Mandal, which began at Azad Maidan. Several NSS units all over

Mumbai attended this rally. Together with millions of people all over the

world our volunteers pledged that there would never be another

Nagasaki and Hiroshima who were victims of the nuclear bomb. The

purpose of this rally was to make nations say no to nuclear weapons

and to maintain peace in this world.

• A unique activity of our unit this year was respectfully disposing

national flags that are thrown on roads and other places after the

Independence Day celebration. Flags were disposed into the seas

behind Kirti College at the hands of the street children. These children

also took part in Ganapati visarjan along with our volunteers.

• Under the Red ribbon Activity, besides attending the inaugural

function of Red Ribbon Club at DTSS College, our students performed

a two Act play on AIDS at MSACS, Thane. In addition our volunteers

participated in a Quiz competition on AIDS awareness and won the 1 st

Prize. Since our college is located on the beach front, our volunteers, Kirti College, AQAR Report-2007-2008 NAAC Accredited “A Grade” 44

on weekends, spread awareness of AIDS through posters, slogans

and street plays among people, especially couples, who visit the

beach. On December 1, which is world AIDS Day, volunteers

conducted a rally displaying posters around Shivaji Park Area.

• Under the Consumer Rights Activity, in association with Mumbai

Grahak panchayat, our college attended various meetings on

consumer rights and awareness in various colleges of Mumbai City

zone. Students were aware on various rights of a consumer, how to

recognize duplicate goods especially in pharmaceutical and health

products. In addition they were also given and shown the difference

between genuine and adulterated food products like tea, milk, rava,

dalchini etc. and how to detect adulteration. One session involved the

issue of wrong advertising.

• Along with the NGO Human Rights and Law, our volunteers helped in

making the women aware on the rights and laws for protection of

abused women. In response to our awareness programme about 7

women visited the NGO to report abuse. In addition they also

conducted a survey on the facilities given to physically challenged

people in apartment buildings.

• The Sarva Shikshan Abhiyan is a project in which our volunteers

conducted a survey on children who are not pursuing education. The

main aim of this project undertaken by BMC is to make every child

educated. Our volunteers surveyed at least 30000 families in the Kirti College, AQAR Report-2007-2008 NAAC Accredited “A Grade” 45

course of one month and have delivered their details to the BMC. In

response to this survey, some parents were convinced and have sent

their children back to school.

• National Mazdoor Railway Union (NMRU) and State Blood

Transfusion Council along with the NSS Unit of Mumbai

University conducted a blood donation camp at various railway

stations. Our volunteers were engaged for nearly 4 months assisting

these organizations at Dadar Central Railway station to collect blood.

They assisted the organization by filling forms of donors, delivering first

aid, making certificates for donors along with donor cards, assisting

doctors checking haemoglobin, checking blood groups, making railway

passengers aware about blood donation. We thank Mr. Vinay Shetty

for his continuous support whenever we required blood This was a

major drive in which huge mounts of blood were collected over a

period 6 months.

• In addition in our college we had two blood donation camps, one in

the month of July and then in the month of November.

• Pulse Polio activity is a major activity of our volunteers. Our

volunteers spread awareness to the general public by going door-to-

door inviting people with children less than 5years to give their children

polio drops. They inform the public about the venue of the pulse polio

and the importance of polio doses for their children. Our volunteers are

also trained to give polio doses. Kirti College, AQAR Report-2007-2008 NAAC Accredited “A Grade” 46

• A medical check up was also conducted during our festival UDAANT

in which teaching and non teaching staff underwent ECG, Lung

functioning, Bone density, Blood pressure, diabetes, neuropathy tests.

• Volunteers took part in a human chain to make people aware on

Cancer and palliative care on 6th October 2007, which is World

hospice and Palliative Care day. Students created a chain from

Hindamata at Dadar to the Parel flyover. The Palliative care Unit of

Tata Memorial hospital organised this programme. Palliative care

involves taking care of physical, emotional, practical, spiritual needs of

a patient in his advanced stages of cancer. This is another area

where the public need to be made aware on the needs of terminal

cancer patients. We intend to make this one of our permanent activities

in the future.

• Another unique programme we were most fortunate to take part in was

the cleaning of the Kanheri Caves. This place was littered with

plastic bottles and other waste left by visitors. Our volunteers along

with children form a neighbouring school were taken by bus to Kanheri

Caves and using gloves and some tools our volunteers cleaned the

region as much as they could. Our country needs to be educated in the

preservation of historical monuments in a big way.

• ‘Vasundara Bachao’ was an activity organized by Yuvak Biradiri,

which highlighted the need to save our planet Earth from destruction

through pollution, environmental degradation, etc. Various colleges Kirti College, AQAR Report-2007-2008 NAAC Accredited “A Grade” 47

made presentations on how to protect the earth from such man made

malaise.

• One annual activity our unit is involved is the Beach cleaning activity

organized by the Naval Coastguards. This is an international activity

in which at least hundred of our volunteers were involve. They

collected many bags of litter in the form of plastic, thermacol,

wrappers, broken remains of Ganapati idols, and other waste material.

• Mumbai Helpline was another NGO with whom our volunteers

assisted in a project of CLEANUP MUMBAI. Volunteers had to map

places for adoption in terms of beautification of areas by way of making

gardens, installing fountains, inserting dustbins etc. They also had to

move with marshals, people appointed by BMC, and make people

aware about cleanliness through street plays, displaying banners and

posters, and advise people on how to maintain cleanliness.

• As usual our volunteers assisted the police in maintaining order and

discipline around Shivaji Park area during the various days of

Ganapati immersion.

• The Rakhi and Flag selling activities are conducted for NGO’s every

year to support physically and mentally challenged children and

hopefully make their lives a little more happier.

• Our volunteers also participated in the closing ceremony of the

sesquicentennial (150 years) celebrations of Mumbai University in

which our Prime Minister was the chief guest. Various dignitaries from Kirti College, AQAR Report-2007-2008 NAAC Accredited “A Grade” 48

all walks of life, who passed form this University made their presence

for this programme. Our volunteers worked hard in the smooth

functioning of the programme by ushering in the guests to their seats,

providing snacks and water to guests, etc.

• Volunteers took part in a college promotional drive that was held for

2 days in the campus of Mumbai University, Kalina where various

colleges including our college displayed various posters and banners

related to the courses conducted in our college. They acted as

spokesmen of our college by informing visitors about the various

courses and programmes held in our college.

• Hamaari Laadli

One of the major activities undertaken by our volunteers was the LAADLI

campaign. Population first is an NGO, which organizes this campaign

with which our volunteers have been associated with for the past three

years. It is an organization that fights against the exploitation of women.

United Nations Population Fund (UNPF) supports this organization. The
