Article for Publication in NAAC news: Project Kiran: The Best example of Community Engagement. D.E. Society’s Kirti College, Dadar, Mumbai 40028 Deccan Education Society’s Kirti College is located in the heart of the city encircled by the sea on one side and the middle class locality on the other. On one side of the college is affluent Dadar-Prabhadevi area, while the other side is Worli, which is basically a fishing village. The college caters to the educational needs of the socio-economically underprivileged sector of the community. Large numbers of students are first generation learners with their parents working as police constables, or labourers or even the household workers. They themselves face acute financial stress and difficulties in their day-to-day life. In spite of this, they are hard working, sincere, committed to work and actively taking part in social work through National Social Service activities (N.S.S.). With the able guidance of the programme officers and teachers, Dr. Hemant Pednekar and Prof. Samuel Mathew, the work of N.S.S. is commendable and perhaps best among the colleges of Mumbai. Owing to accolades N.S.S. unit of Kirti college was selected for the project on runaway and destitute children in Mumbai with collaboration of O.P.C.R. (Organization for Protection of Rights of Children), which is an international organization Kirti College, AQAR Report-2006-2007 50 working for the welfare of the runaway and street children. The project Kiran, (a ray of light and hope), aptly describes the title of the project commenced in August 2005. The N.S.S. students of Kirti College started working under the guidance of O.P.C.R., Mumbai. The main objectives of the project were: • Provision of basic education and recreation • Provision of healthcare and nutrition. • Prevention of abuse and exploitation through awareness. • Provide individual and group counselling. • Help de-addiction ( most of the children are addicted to inhalants) • Provide skills which they can empower themselves • Create leaders capable of guiding other such children from abuse and exploitation in the future.

Primary objective of the survey was to gather information about children working along the Western Railway corridor of Mumbai, from Churchgate to Virar. The work began with the initial survey conducted by the volunteering students of N.S.S. The survey provided an insight into the lives of these children and the reason for their socially and economically abnormal situations. The survey revealed details of difficult living conditions of these children, nature of their employment, long working hours, their exploitation by the society and the reason of their separation from family and homes. The collected data revealed the following facts: • Nearly 33% of the children surveyed were aged between 11 and 15 years. • Of these majority were males. • Lower percentage of girls in this group was noteworthy. • One of the reasons could be that girls are docile and less aggressive with in-built family values. But possibility of their trafficking may not be ruled out. They often fall prey to the prostitution rackets in the metropolis. • More than 60% of the children make living by selling consumer durables or refreshments in the suburban railways. Kirti College, AQAR Report-2006-2007 51

• They work for long hours earning per month anywhere between Rs. 500-5000/-. • Nearly 60-75% of the children stay in slums, shanties, open public places such as railway stations, footpaths, railway/road bridges etc. • The survey also showed that the children were enterprising, independent and worked for their survival. This was the major factor for selection of our study and developmental work through education. • These special category children who were surveyed and targeted in this study, represented one of the most difficult groups to tackle for reformation and rehabilitation, as they were independent financially as well as for shelter. Most of these children between 8-16 years of age have migrated from North, North-East and South and the state of Maharashtra as well. The reasons for their migrations include lack of proper social and family life, abuse or exploitation by family members, neighbours or peers, lack of opportunities for growth and development and more often, a combination of several or more of these factors. As a result, although independent and capable of learning, they are also vulnerable to exploitation and abuse by the society.

On every Sunday, N.S.S. student volunteers went to Railway-stations and persuaded these children to the college campus where they spent quality time with the students. Weekly education sessions were conducted at the college that comprised of three hour session on education, recreation, counselling, health and food. The subjects included:  Human values—punctuality, discipline, manners  Health and hygiene  Recreational activities—dance, aerobics, sports  Art-painting , craft  Natural Science  Geography  Environment  History and Civics (Laws, applications, authorities, fundamental rights and duties etc)  Sex education and knowledge of HIV and AIDS Kirti College, AQAR Report-2006-2007 52

 Languages such as Hindi, English, Marathi or other vernacular languages. The manner and form of presentation was as follows:  Audiovisuals—slides or power point presentations  Films  Skits  Pictorial books  Field trips  Practicals.

There were several hurdles initially. The children who attended a session on one Sunday absconded on the following as it was difficult to locate them. There was initial resistance on the part of these children as they were not sure about the intentions of our students. Many children had past experience of molestation and abuse and they were apprehensive about the strangers. But, eventually the faces became familiar and our students could impart effective training to these children. Now they have become voluntary and regular in visiting Kirti College Campus. Recent trip to Nehru Planetarium and Worli Sea Face proved very effective in reducing apathy towards education. Also, music orchestra programme arranged for these children was highly appreciated by them, indicating their need for recreation. The honorary visits by professional counsellors were useful and going to be continued in near future to tackle issues of emotional trauma of these children.

It was an indeed innovative idea of N.S.S. Unit at Kirti College to undertake such programme for community development. While working for these children two fold results were achieved. 1. These children have grown up without any parental guidance, familial support and educational training. The society needs to understand their needs, potentials and provide them necessary support, education, physical, psychological, emotional or skill-based support, so as to create independently thinking empowered citizens of the country. Gradually and systematically Kirti College aims at this. 2. With a long-term strategy to improve the children’s conditions and to prevent Kirti College, AQAR Report-2006-2007 53

exploitation, the Project Kiran developed weekly interactive sessions, which provided deeper understanding of their lives. Our students were so deeply involved with this activity that they themselves are now thinking of possible ways to rehabilitate these children. They are keen on having training to equip themselves with counselling skills, so that they can make not only these children free from addictions but also other forbidden activities.

Our college students were in turn immensely benefited in last one and half years. The students have developed altogether different personality of compassion towards the underprivileged which is so rare among the college students. They have become more responsible and mature young adults. Mostly all the students admitted that working for such an endeavour has changed their attitude to look at life. Though our students come from economically poor family backgrounds and have their own limitations, they now understand the advantage of being in the protected family life. Some of them reported that their examination phobia and stress have been circumvented. This is a very direct effect, but it is due to the fact that they are getting the attitude of gratitude for being lucky to get college education. They have learnt the value of education and no longer bunk classes as they know the importance of their parent’s money paid towards fees.
