Beatles Hits Become Mobile Phone Ringtones 23 February 2012 Beatles hits become mobile phone ringtones 23 February 2012 Hits from The Beatles have finally joined the chorus of ringtones available for mobile phones. Catchy 30-second snippets from more than two dozen of the famed 1960s British rock band's top tunes are available exclusive at Apple's online iTunes shop, a message Wednesday at official website thebeatles.com. "Fans around the world can, for the first time, purchase ringtones for the Beatles' 27 UK and US #1 hits, exclusively on iTunes," the message announced. "You can even assign your favourite tracks to your favourite people," it continued. The ringtones were priced at $1.29 each and could be downloaded for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch devices. The list of Beatles songs included "Can't Buy Me Love" and "Let It Be." The Beatles arrived on iTunes in November of 2010 after what late Apple's Steve Jobs described at the time as "a long and winding road." A decade had been spent getting the music of "Fab Four" -- Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr -- released in digital form for Apple's wildly popular mobile devices. The vast catalog of Beatles hits had been held back for years from Internet download sites amid legal squabbles, although their songs have long circulated as unlicensed downloads available from unlicensed peer-to-peer networks. • WORSHIP PLAYLIST: If You Are Inclined to Watch Every Video in This Worship Service, You May Find It Convenient to Use This Playlist
Welcome I couldn’t resist going back to the well of The Beatles another week in a row. Don picked two such lovely songs which both appear on Let It Be, the last album the Beatles recorded together (it was released a month after their breakup). To some, “The Long and Winding Road” speaks to the long and winding road of the Beatles’ career together. To others, it no doubt speaks to life in general, and especially 2020! This has certainly been a long, winding, tumultuous year. Time seems stretched. Weeks feel like months. We wind about in a summer that feels neverending, and marvel that four months can sound like a short amount of time but feel like an eternity. The Gospel according to Paul (McCartney) may just have more Good News for us this week, news that echoes the Gospel. But who is singing? In whose voice do we hear the words? Let’s look for an answer together. WORSHIP PLAYLIST: If you are inclined to watch every video in this worship service, you may find it convenient to use this playlist. You’ll only need to pause and unpause playback as needed (you may need to skip advertisements as usual); the videos will auto-run in the correct order. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL14NES9h705Ve8Cx6x4QMxeqHibuPl4Su Prelude Etude from 13 Pieces for Piano, Op. 76 No. 2 J. • Early Beatles History: 1940-1964 Birth of the Beatles
MOVIES ABOUT THE BEATLES Early Beatles History: 1940-1964 Birth of The Beatles In 1978, Elvis – The Movie premiered on American television. The pro- duction was a dramatization of Elvis Presley’s life, featuring Kurt Rus- sell as Elvis. His unexpected death the year before had revived the public interest in ‘The King,’ and countless biographies invaded the market. The movie spawned several fictional and/or biographical films about po- pular culture icons, such as Buddy Holly (The Buddy Holly Story, 1978) and The Beatles (Birth of The Beatles, 1979). In the 1980s and 1990s, only a handful of pop biographies were successful at the box office, i. e. Luis Valdez’ La Bamba (1987) about Richie Valens, Oliver Stone’s The Doors (1991) and Iain Softley’s Backbeat (1993). More recently, Holly- wood has produced a string of highly successful TV and cinema biogra- phies of musical heroes. The most notable films and series are The Rat Pack (1998) about the lives and times of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Sammy Davis Jr., Ray (2004) about Ray Charles, Stoned (2005) about The Rolling Stones’ Brian Jones, and – again – Elvis (2005). Starting with Birth of The Beatles, The Beatles’ history has been dramatized in various forms for television as well as for the cinema. While The Beat- les’ early group history has been dealt with in Birth of The Beatles (1979), Backbeat (1993), and In His Life: The John Lennon Story (2000), John Lennon’s private life was explored in John and Yoko: A Love Story (1985) and The Hours and Times (1991).
