The resources have been designed to enable adult learning tutors to organise a local heritage project, comprising four 3-hour workshops, based on the correspondence of Edward Willes, a 19 th century Leamington landowner. The letters were transcribed by local volunteers, supported by the Leamington History Group, and are held at the Warwickshire County Record Office. 2 Edward Willes and his Leamington Legacy The Willes family first obtained the Newbold Comyn estate, close to the small village of Leamington Priors, in the late 16 th century. By 1820, when Leamington was being commercially developed as a spa town, Edward Willes had inherited extensive lands to the north and east of the town. Willes was a great traveller and while abroad, planned the development of his estate.

The Leamington Omnibus Newsletter of the Leamington History Group Autumn 2012 J E Duggins, R B A. 1881 – 1968 Leamington artist & photographer James Edward Duggins was born on 27th March, 1881, the son of a Cubbington watchmaker. He studied under Algernon Talmage with the Newlyn School. In St Ives, Duggins became friends with John Anthony Park whose marine pictures were a big source of inspiration to him. He met Edward Stott and Sir George Clausen who had a profound influence on Duggins' pastel work. He also met Sir John Alfred Arnesby Brown whose rustic images of cattle and leafy landscapes influenced his composition and technique. James Duggins exhibited at a number of galleries including the Paris Salon (1927), the Royal Academy, Manchester, Birmingham, James Edward Duggins Liverpool and Coventry. The Royal Leamington Spa Art Gallery and Museum holds eleven of his works. In 1906, after two years in Cornwall, he established a successful photographic business, The Grove Studio, 23 Regent Grove, Leamington (now numbered 36/37). A number of mayoral portraits photographed by Duggins hang to this day in the Town Hall. James Duggins taught at The Boys' College, Binswood Avenue, and the Art School,in Leamington. He continued painting in the countryside of Warwickshire and the Cotswolds, which was his greatest love, until the age of 67. He then devoted his time to small pencil sketches as he worked alongside his son David in the photographic business. He illustrated two books: 'Sweet Arden' (1906) by George Morley, also 'Unknown Warwickshire' (1924) by Mary Dormer Harris. He died on 23rd December 1968 and was laid to rest in the Churchyard at St Mary Magdalene, Lillington, where he had been a member of the choir for many years.

  • Leamington Spa Conservation Area Conservation Royal Leamington Spa Designated Planning Permission Will Be Required to Carry out Works Covered by the Designation
A Guide to Conservation Areas www.warwickdc.gov.uk Conservation Areas: Are designated under Section 69 of the 1990 Planning Act which defines Conservation Areas as “Areas of special architectural or historic interest, the character or appearance of which it is desirable to preserve or enhance.” There are many different kinds ranging from whole town centres to squares, terraces and village centres as is evident from the different characteristics of each conservation area within Warwick District. Conservation areas may be designated by Local Authorities, the Secretary of State and English Heritage in London. Local residents can apply to local planning authorities to have their areas designated. The designation of a conservation area has several formal consequences as set out below. These are designed to protect the best qualities of the Conservation Area for the benefit and enjoyment of everyone. The demolition of most buildings is controlled, requiring conservation area consent from the local authority. It is always preferable to consult the Local Authority before carrying out demolition in a Conservation Area. Partial demolition is not always controlled and advice can be given on this by a Planning Officer at the local authority. Notification of Trees Works. Notification must be made to a local authority if works are proposed on a tree with a trunk of 75 mm diameter, or greater, at a height of 1.5 metres from the ground. If tree removal for thinning purposes is proposed then the diameter raises to 100 mm. The Act does refer to trees and not shrubs as this applies to timber which is 1.5 metres high with the requisite diameter trunks.

  • Lillington Parish Magazine St Mary Magdalene's Church
Lillington Parish Magazine St Mary Magdalene’s Church SEPTEMBER 2018 1 2 FROM OUR MINISTER Dear All, I am delighted to be writing my first letter in this wonderful publication. Reading through the back copies of Crosstalk in preparation for my interview was most informative. Time is now flying by and, as I write this article, we have been resident here in the Vicarage for three whole days! Boxes and bubble wrap surround us at every turn but we are gradually finding places for everything. We are very excited about joining you all in September and have already been made to feel most welcome by lots of the neighbours. Growing up in Leamington and having passed through the parish every day for seven years on the bus to school means that there is already a great sense of being back home. Tricia and I were married in Leamington at St Paul’s, whose spire we can see from our bedroom window. Since 1990 we have worked in a variety of contexts in Coventry and latterly just a twenty-minute walk east of the Cathedral in Stoke. For the last nine years I have been Team Rector with oversight of four churches in a parish of thirty thousand. One of these churches was St Mary Magdalene, which at over nine hundred years, is the oldest church in Coventry. Mary Magdalene’s story is one that has a particular fascination for me, so to come here to Lillington feels right on many different levels. Ahead lies a new chapter for us all and I am very grateful to all who have worked so hard during the interregnum to ensure that worship has continued uninterrupted, the building and grounds have been well cared for and the parish in general has been well served.
