CHAPELIZOD. , a village partly in parish, Uppercross , but chiefly in the parish of the same name, Castleknoek barony, Dublin county, three miles W. from the General Post Office, Dublin, comprising an area of 63 acres. Population, 1,280, inhabiting 255 houses. It is partly situate on the , on the high road to Galway, and near to the Great Southern and Western line of Railway. It is said to derive its name from La belle Izod, daughter of King Aenpus. King William III. spent several days in it; and prior to the erection of the Viceregal lodge, it was the country residence of the Viceroy. Its buildings are, a Church, with an ivied tower, a Roman , a Dispensary, a National School, and Metropolitan Police Station. Omnibuses run between College-green, Golden-bridge, and every half hour, from 9, A.M., to 10, P.M.

CLONDALKIN. . 3.n inland pari^i and village, partly in Newcastle, but chiefly in Uppercross barony, Dublin county,4i5 miles S. VY. from Dublin, comprising an area of 4,777 acres, of which 44- are in the village. Population. 2,430"; of village, 474. inhabiting 89 houses, "it is situated near the ninth lock of the Grand Canal, and close to the line of the Great Southern and Western Railway, of which it is the first station from Dublin. It was ancient > named Cluain-Dolcan, and by the Danes Dun-awley. The village consists chiefly of one irregular street, of snian but neatly built houses and cottages. The only public buildings are the Parish Church, a small plain modern building, and a neat Roman Catholic Church. It has Almshouses for destitute widows, a Dorcas Institution, Lying-in Hospital, and Dispensary, a Parochial and two National Schools, and a Constabulary Police Station, The ancient round tower is the nearest structure of the kind to the metropolis, and is in good preservation, stand? 100 feet high, and is 15 feet in diameter, covered with a conical roof of sfeooe. CLONSKEAGH. f.ONSKEAGH, a village in the parish of St. Mary's, Donnybrook, barony and county of Dublin, three miles S. from e General Post Office, Dublin, comprising an area of 68 acres. There is a male and female National school. filiation, 310, inhabiting 54 houses. It is situated on the , and on the road to Emihskerry. • contains two hammer-smith iron works. The neighbourhood is studded with gentlemen's seats and neat alias. Vergemount is a pretty range of houses close to the village. Roebuck, a district half a mile further on, covered with elegant mansions and demesnes, the principal of which is the castle of that name, the seat of • P. Westby, esq. Milliown is less than half a mile to the right of Clonskeagh, in the parish of Milltown, Upercross barony, and comprises an area of 185 acres. Population 863, inhabiting 132 houses. The ( urch of St. Philip, -which has recently been erected, is situate at Temple-road, , adjoining the miltown railway station. There is a small Roman Catholic Church. The Parish Church is situate at St. "ary's, Simmonscourt, Donnybrook. The tram-cars ply to Donnybrook from Nelson's pillar daily. Q.C On crossing Loughlinstown green, to the right, on the brow of the hill, stands the Rathdown Union Workhouse, very prettily and most salubriously situated on a site of eight acres, erected in 1841 at an expense of £6,000. LUCAN. "CAN, an inland town and parish in Newcastle barony, Dublin county, seven miles W. from Dublin, compming n area °f 1,126 acres. Population, 523. It is partly the property of the Colthurst Vesoy family, and Partly the property of the representatives of the late J. Gandon, esq. The town is prettily situated in a ettile vale, on the south bank of the River Liffey, which is here crossed by a stone bridge of one arch, and consists of one wide angular street of small but neat houses and cottages, most of which are let in summer to is»itors and invalids. Its public buildings are, the Parish Church, a neat structure with a tower and spire, a large le^ Ror"an Catholic Church, a Sisters of Mercy Convent, and a WesleyanjMetbodist Church. It has a Dispensary U( p Loai\Fund ; a Lending Library, Church, and National Schools. It is a Chief Constabulary Police Station, "etty Sessions are held every alternate Tuesday. PALMERSTOWN. PALMERSTOWN, or PALMERSTON, a parish and village in Uppercross barony, Dublin county, five miles west from the General Post Office, Dublin, comprising an area of 1,518 acres. Population of the parish, 1,511. It is situated on the river Liffey and road to Lucan, and contains large cotton milis, iron and lead works, and oil and dye-stuff mills. The village consists of small humble dwellings, irregularly built, a Roman Catholic chapel, and Constabulary Police station. The Great Southern and Western line of railway passes through the parish. In the vicinity there are several handsome seats and villas, the principal of which is Palmerstown House, a seat of the Earl of Donoughmore, erected by his ancestor, the Right Hon. T. H. Hutchinson, when Secretary for Ireland. It is a spacious mansion in an elevated situation, commanding fine views. A fair for horses and cattle, well frequented, takes place on 21st August.

PHIBSBOHOUGH. FIIIBSBOROUGH, an extensive suburb and district, partly in the parish of St. George, but chiefly in that of , barony, Dublin city and county, 1| miles N.W. from the General Post Office, Dublin. It is situated partly within, and partly without, the electoral boundary, on the road to Navan, along which it extends, and on the Royal Canal and North Circular-road. Within its limits is Grangegorman church; also a Roman Catholic church belonging to the union of St. Paul; the Royal Military Infirmary, the Constabulary Police Barracks, and the Zoological Gardens, all three within the ; the Convent of St. Man', Cabra, the Female Orphan house and Episcopal chapel, North Circular-road ; and there are National schools, male and female. RATHFAENHAM. , a parish and village in Uppercross and Rathdown baronies, Dublin county, four miles south from the General Post Office, Dublin, comprising an area of 2,581 acres. Population, 5,555. It is situated on the road to Whitechurch, and near where the Military-road commences that crosses the mountains into Wicklow county. The village consists of one long irregular street: the Church on the right side, with a tower and spire. The Roman Catholic Church is a large building. The Loretto Convent, in the vicinity is a modern brick building, attached to which there is an elegant chapel, a female free school, also a ladies' boarding and day school. There is also at a Carmelite Convent, also a Dispensary, a Petty Sessions Court-house, and District Constabulaiv Police Station. A fair is held on July 10. The bridge of Rathfarnham, over the river Dodder, is several hun­ dred yards from the village, the approach to which is rising ground, thickly shaded in summer by the trees of the demesnes on each side. The neighbourhood abounds in pretty seats and villas, commanding rich views of the Dublin mountains and bay. The castle of Rathfarnham Avas built by Archbishop Loftus in the rei^n of Elizabeth. One of the entrances to the demesne, fronting the Dodder, is in the style of a Roman triumphal arch. The entrance to the castle is by a portico of eight Doric columns that support a dome painted in fresco with the signs of the zodiac. , a village in the parish of Whitechurch, is about one and a quarter miles farther on, and comprises an area of two acres. RATHGAR (TOWNSHIP OF RATHMINES AND RATHGAR). RATHGAR. a in Rathfarnham parish, Rathdown barony, Dublin county, 3 miles south from the General Post Office, Dublin. Population, 1,180. It is situated midway between Rathmines and , on the road to Rathfarnham and Tallaght, and is now one of the most pleasing outlets of the metropolis, studded with handsome terraces or detached villas, and several pretty avenues diverging from the centre, and leading towards HaroldVcross, the river Dodder, Terenure, and Upper Rathmines. Close to the cross-roads are extensively-worked quarries of calp limestone, which is chieily raised by blasting. A tramway from Dublin has been opened.

TALLAGHT. TALLAGHT, an inland town and parish in Uppercross barony, Dublin county, seven miles S. W. by W. from Dablin, comprising an area of '21,868 acres. Population of parish, 4,921 ; of town, 312, inhabiting 57 houses. The town is situated on the road to Blessington, and the parish extends from hill on the river Dodder. to the Green hills at its western extremity. The southern portion forms the range called the Tallaght Hills, and commands magnificent views of the bay and vale of Dublin. The church, a little above the town, dedicated to St. Maeirune, is a modern building in the pointed style. At Firhouse there is a convent of Discalced Carmelites, and at Mount Anne a small monastery of the same order, and a Priory of the Dominican order at St. Mary's, in both of which free schools are held. In the town there is a Dispensary, and there are National and Parochial Schools. It is a Constabulary Police station, and Petty Sessions are held every alternate Wednesday.
