  • From the Bullpen
1 FROM THE BULLPEN Official Publication of The Hot Stove League Eastern Nebraska Division 1992 Season Edition No. 11 September 22, 1992 Fellow Owners (sans Possum): We have been to the mountaintop, and we have seen the other side. And on the other side was -- Cooperstown. That's right, we thought we had died and gone to heaven. On our recent visit to this sleepy little hamlet in upstate New York, B.T., U-belly and I found a little slice of heaven at the Baseball Hall of Fame. It was everything we expected, and more. I have touched the plaque of the one they called the Iron Horse, and I have been made whole. The hallowed halls of Cooperstown provided spine-tingling memories of baseball's days of yore. The halls fairly echoed with voices and sounds from yesteryear: "Say it ain't so, Joe." "Can't anybody here play this game?" "Play ball!" "I love Brian Piccolo." (Oops, wrong museum.) "I am the greatest of all time." (U-belly's favorite.) "I should make more money than the president, I had a better year." "Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio?" And of course: "I feel like the luckiest man alive." Hang on while I regain my composure. Sniff. Snort. Thanks. I'm much better From the Bullpen Edition No. 11 September 22, 1992 Page 2 now. If you ever get the chance to go to Cooperstown, take it. But give your wife your credit card and leave her at Macy's in New York City. She won't get it.

The Boston Red Sox Monday, November 5, 2018 * The Boston Globe Mookie Betts, Jackie Bradley Jr., and Ian Kinsler win Gold Glove awards Peter Abraham Jackie Bradley Jr. didn’t need a Gold Glove to be recognized as one of the best center fielders in the major leagues. Red Sox fans have known that for several years. But Bradley certainly did deserve one and it finally came his away on Sunday night. Bradley, right fielder Mookie Betts, and second baseman Ian Kinsler were Gold Glove winners. The Red Sox and Atlanta Braves each had three. A finalist in 2014 and ’16, Bradley was selected ahead of Mike Trout (Angels) and Adam Engel (White Sox) in voting done by managers and coaches. Bradley was second among MLB center fielders with an 8.7 ultimate zone rating and tied for the American League lead with eight assists. There’s no statistic for improbable acrobatic catches but Bradley had a series of those. Betts won for the third consecutive year, the first Red Sox player to do that since Dwight Evans won five in a row from 1981-85. Betts is now one of seven Red Sox players to win three or more Gold Gloves. Betts led all right fielders with 20 defensive runs saved. He has 83 DRS the last three seasons. Kinsler, 36, is now a two-time winner. He also won with the Tigers in 2016. In 128 games for the Angels and Red Sox, Kinsler had 10 DRS, the most in the AL at second base. Andrew Benintendi (left field) and Mitch Moreland (first base) were finalists.

  • Van-Der-Ahe-Review1
    J. Thomas Hetrick. Chris Von der Ahe and the St. Louis Browns. Lanham : Scarecrow Press, . pp. Cloth, $.. Ron Kaplan Before there was George Steinbrenner, there was Christian Frederick Wilhelm Von der Ahe. Before Ted Turner, the peripatetic owner of the Atlanta Braves, donned the flannels for a one-game stint as field manager, there was Von der Ahe. In fact, the stereotypical “magnate” running the club both on and off the . , field, bellowing commands, chintzing on his players’ salaries can be traced to this German entrepreneur from the late nineteenth century. Chris Von der Ahe and the St. Louis Browns, J. Thomas Hetrick’s account of this “strange baseball odyssey,” has all the ingredients of a made-for- movie: melodrama, political intrigue, sex, and comedy, to name a few. According to Hetrick, Von der Ahe “loved to portray himself as a one-time poor immigrant who braved a perilous sea voyage to come to America. Arriving in the United States alone and near penniless, [he] started out as a grocery clerk. Within the space of fifteen years he had become a store proprietor, saloon owner, real estate holder, landlord and baseball magnate.” He knew little about the finer points of the game yet, as is often the case with men of his ilk, “fancied himself as an excellent judge of ballplayer abilities, although the facts say otherwise.” Believe it or not, the St. Louis Browns once were the class of baseball (back in the s), and Von der Ahe was understandably proud. He spared no expense in presenting his product, gussying up his ballparks, serving as a generous host for the press, and striving always to improve the team and, by extension, his own image.
