PROGRAM OF WORK

Factors to be considered in developing the 1938 Program of Work:

1. Size or County - Distance between communities and

scattered homes.

2. Limited expense account.

3. History of project.

4. Needs for work - Where? - What? - Equipment to work with?

5. Present progress of develoent.

6. Spirit of cooperation and help given to Agent.

7. Present Economic Situation.

8. Requests for work, which could not be met on account of

time and mileage.

9. Increased home gardens and the need ot caring for this

surplus.

10. Suggestions from state Agent.

11. Definite days for office work.

12. Definite days set aside for miscellaneous or emergency work.

13. Cooperation with outside organizations such as Vocational,

HO\(JNAXERS CLUBS

History - See 1935 and 1936 reports. The Homemakers groups of

this county have been carrying the outline as suggested by the State

Home Demonstration Agent tor the past three years. Additional group. have used these outlines tor miscellaneous work. However, the Stewart, SUlphur Spr1ngs, Double Adobe and Whitewater groups have completed three years requirements. These outlines have baen used as the basis tor each meeting. e one criticism bas been that the Agent has had to do ost ot the work. However, in each group

each woman has assisted and in sane eases they have given demonstra

tions. Bach year at the annual birthday party, which is really the achievement day of the stewart Homemakers, Miss Frances L. Brown has been present and has listened to a review of the years work.

The Homemakers groups ot Stewart and Double Adobe have attended the County Far.m Bureau picnic far the past three years. At such meetings there has been much enjoyment in comparing notes on what various clubs are doing and in free comparison as to what can be done to mae their organizations better.

During the pest year the Stewart Homemakers have taken over ODe room at the Stewart School and have established a Club House. They have built two tables, each twelve feet in length, and have started the necessary equipment to serve their own community dinners, parties, ete. During the year the Homemakers had a joint picnic with the H

ealth Club at Stewart. This is the first time that the Homemakers

have Joined with the 4wH Clubs and an "enjoyable day was the result.

The Club presented a model business meeting for the occasion,

providing the music and program.

'!he SUlphur Springs Homemakers have completed six of the required

third year demonstrations and have had ten meetings during the year.

They have maintataed their club room but have had no new equipment.

They have taken care of the sick, remembering each club member who

bas been Sick with letters, flowers and baskets or food. They

presented the agent with a beautiful brief case during the past year.

They voted fund. to send the outstanding girl in their community

to the 4-H Round-Up. They have prepared a Christmas box tor the

Children's Home.

Double Adobe Homemakers have spent much of the past year on

activities within their own community. Each month a mamber of the

Homemakers group or a commdttee of several members has served a

community dinner to the local Farm Bureau organization. These have

been quite elaborate affairs. Their club room has been decorated and

dinners have been beautifully served and a program furnished for the

evening. In addition to the equipment reported last year these women have stained and varnished their six tables, have bought dishes and

silver· sufficient to serve Sixty people. They have just completed paying for three dozen steel chairs which will add materially to the

!._omtort ot the hr10U8 groups. '!he Homemakers have added material-

11 in the 4-H Club Work that has been carried on in the Double

Adobedletrict. They have chaperoned the youngsters on each occasion and have cooperated in everr way possible in making the Social

Progress Club in this community outstanding in the state.

The Whi tews ter Homemakers, known as the Valley Woman's Club, has been untortunate in not having a Club Room ot their own. They have had to meet· in each others homes but at the same time they have been able to carryon a worthwhile years work. They have campleted/nine ot the outline! demonstrations. It is true that the agent has had to help with the demonstrations but the women have gained much contidence and have affected a good organization.

The agent devoted ten days to work in four communities. She had five meetings with an attendance ot 140.

FOOD PREPARATION

Only four days during the year were spent with tood prepara

t1on. Four demonstrations were given in two communi ties with

holiday menus as a subject with an attendance or 58.

A radio te.lk was prepared OD Cranberry Jelly in connection

with menus for the winter season. st ot the work in tood

preparation has been carried on through office calls and individual

conta.cts.

N.U'lRI TI ON

1'OOD PRESERV.!TI ON

History - See 1930, 1931, 1932, 1933, 1934, 1935, 1936 reports.

Food preservation has been an important part of Home Demonstration

Work tor the past eight years. During this time demonstrations have been given to practically eTery communi ty in the eounty. The agent feels tht most of the rural women are able to take care ot their

canning problems quite efficiently. However, from time to time the

agent is still called on to visit small groups, especially new

comers in various communities. We have tried to do this whenever the

occasion arises and have found that working wi th small groups in their own kitchen has been quite worthwhile.

Where 8 series or demonstrations have been given the agent likes to give' a demonstration on the use of the pressure cooker. in the canning or non-acid vegetables and meats in both tin cans and glass jars. The canning ot fruit has been lim!ted to exhibit canning. The competition in exhibit canning 1a thi8 county 1s still interesting. A good exhibit has bean prepared in each communi ty and exb,ibl ted in the loaal and county fairs.

Canning demonstrations have been given at Russellville, stewart,

Willcox, Double-Adobe, Whitewater, Webb Motherts Club, Cochise and

ucker. Special attention has been give to making or better jellies and pickles. The agent has pcha8ed a saltameter and hes tested brine in

.six communi ties.

Assistance has been given in the regulation ot sealers and

the testing of pressure cookers. A number ot new thermometers have been purchased.

The following has been reported tram the county in coanction with food preservation. The Agent spent nine days on canning in

seven communities. Twelve meetings have been held with an attendance

ot 145.

In addition to the home canning there is much interest in this county in canning tor exhibit. The stewart women have an exhlbit ready to be judged tor state honors in Kerr canning. This contest is sponsored by the Kerr Glass Mfg. Corp and exhibi 1;s have been pre pared by Mrs. Carter, Mrs. Dearing and Mrs. Ellis.

CLO'lHING

History - See 1930, 1931. 1932, 1933, 1934, 1935, 1936 reports.

Clothing has been a part of the Agent's work each yeaD tor the past

eight years.

Twenty oommunities have been visited and in each community six

or more demonstrations have been given by the Agent. After a

Specialist was added to the Extension Office fifteen dars work has

been given to the county each year. The agent has a series ot six

lessons in home sewing that has been given as a forerunner ot the

sewing. Following these six lessons each group enrolls for the type ot sewing in which they are interested. This has included reconstruction, pattern alterations, short cuts, machine attachments, handmade trimmings and hat renovation.

During the past year the Agen has had sewing demonstrations in thirteen communities with a total or 22 meetings and an attendance ot

390.

Outstanding in this work, and the agent teels the most worth while', has been the demonstrations given by the Clothing Specialist.

Mrs. Margaret Watson, on the renovation of sewing machines. Such demonstrations were given in the Whitewater, Webb, Frontier, Cochise, stewart, Rucker Canyon, South Bisbee, Riggs Settlement, and Sulphur

Springs communities and before the Reliet Society. In each district the machines were brought to a central place and each woman worked on lier own machine. She was told to take the machine apart, clean, oil and reassemble. Following the conditioning of the machine considerable

tim. was given to the regulation of the tension, the stitch, belt

e.nd in each case the woman was taught whaj to look tor in diagnosing

the troubles of her particular machine. It was surprising how tew

ot these machines really needed anything except a good cleaning. A

total ot sixty machines were serviced during these demonstrations.

In moat cases this work took most of the day and these were all

day meetings. Time was taken out tor a brief lunch and work

immediately resumed. TOe sewing machine cleaning demonstrations

f were tollowed in each communi ty wi th demonstrations on the use ot

sewing machine attachments. In each case the women were given an

opportunity to work with their own attachments and much benetit was

derived fram tnis instruction.

The Specialist gave two demonstrations on children's clothing.

A sleeve demonstration was given to South Bisbee, Whitewater and

Double Adobe.

The Agent gave a series ot six lessons to the women at Rucker

CaDyon, Biggs Settlement and Portal. Miscellaneous demonstrations

were given at Cochise, stewart and Whitewater. One dress torm was

made in Willcox. Assistance has been given in the making over of

garments, sugg8tions tor patterns and fittings. The reconstruction

ot gar.ments was given as a miscellaneous demonstration to Cochise.

The remodelling ot hate and the construction of cloth hats and help

in the oftice in the reblockiug of hats has been given to Cochise,

.stewart, Willcox and SUlphur Springs.

J!_CJ4E MANAGD4ENT

History - See 1930, -1931, 1932, 1933, 1934, 1935, 1936 reports.

The early history ot this project was combined with Home Furnishings

under the heading ot Home Improvement but since a specialist had came

on the force, tor two years we have reported Home Management and Home

Furnishings as separate projects.

The Home Management project tor Cochise Oounty has been almost

entirely under the supersion of the state Hame Management Specialist.

She has visited the county, spending thirteen days and working in

fifteen communities. Forty-three demonstrations have been given.by the

Agent or Speciali st. Twenty-two circular letters have been sent out

and thirty-tive home visits made.

Home Accounts - Home account books have been suplied to forty

three women. at this number we hope to have twelve finished books.

Account keeping has probed to be the herdest work that has ever been

carried on in this county_ The wanen mean well, start with enthuSiasm

but find many excuses at the end or the second month. The Home

Management Specialist has visited the county three times in checking

these accounts. She gave instructions at the first meetlDg, a8 to how the books should be tilled out. At the second meeting summarizing and correcting mistakes at group meetings. The third check-up as a house

to house Visitation looking over the account books to date. Last year

his county turned in six completed books.

Other demonstrations by the Home Management Specialist have covered subjects, such as the"attractive kitchen", "reading the label", labor saviDg ctertces, cleaning agencies and tly control. Perhaps the most

Bertha Vir.mond, Cochise County, Arizona. 1937. - 12 -

interesting days with the Specialist hes been the work days in which kitchen stools and other kitchen convenienees were made.

SUpplementing the work by the Specialist, the Agent made 125 ti11ng cabinets. The object ot these tiling cabinets was to have a pla.e to keep store accounts. billa, etd. Instead ot keep store bills, many ot the women are keeping their embroidery patterns and what have-you in these cabinets. byway it wa,s fun to make the cabinets, the wamen are proud or them and they have a use, it not the intended use. Spice shelves haTe been made from corrugated boxes and gummed paper. These were quickly made and helped to extend the cupboard space.

At a work meeting at Whitewater with the Specialist sixteen articles were completed under the supe8ion ot the Specialist.

At a similar meeting at Stewart ten kitchen stools were completed.

HOME FURNlS3INGS

History • See 1930, 1931, 1932, 1933, 1934, 1935, 1936 reports.

This work was formerly carried together wi th Home Management under

the general heading ot Home Improvement. This included exterior as

well as interior problems. bince the coming or the Specialist, Home

Furnishings has included interior problems exclusive of the kitchen.

Home Furnishings as a project has been carried on in the follow

ing communi ties: Willcox, Double Adobe, Frontier, eochi 88, Sulphur

Springs, Douala., Forest Station, Whitewater and Stewart. '!he agent

spent fifteen and one-halt days with 28 meetings ani 605 attendance.

Mattresses - The renovation and construction of mattresses has

been considered in this county for the first time. With the assistance

of the state Home Demonstration Agent the agent has made several viSits

to factories in Safford, Tucson and Las Cruces. The raw ctton has

been carded and used in the reconstruction ot ordinary mattresses and

in the construction of new inner spring mattresses. Mattress covers

have been made and fifteen women haTe been given assistance with

mattress problems. It is expected that an interest in the construction

or mattresses will be increased within the next few months.

Kitchen Curtains - The agent has prepared a demonstration kit ot kitchen curtains. Most ot these curtains were made from inexpensive material with homemade trimRdng which will brighten up the drap kitchens.

ls demonstration has been given to twenty groups or women and has been

,ell received.

X1tchen Gadgets - The agent has made a collection of kitchen

gadgets which should be labelled EaTing devices. Some or these are

homemade. This collection has been tried out by fifteen groups of

women and te women have baen inter8ted in selecting the suggestions

that can be *eed in their own kitchens an discarding others which

they feel are not practical for their hoes.

Rugs .. Rug demonstrations have been given in ten communi ties.

Everj' year requests come tor ways of using the accumulated rags. The

agent has a collection ot homemade rugs that can be mde without an1

expense and which are usable in any roan in the home. SUch demonstra

tions have been given in Douglas, before the W. P. A., Biggs Settlement,

Portal, Cochise and South Bisbee. These rug demonstrations have been

given otten in connection with other damonstrations. When the agent

has a new rug pattern she carries it along and before the day is over

each woman has made a sample. In some camnuni ties all day rug meet

ings have been held at which time each woman starts a rug and receives

any personal attention that is necessary.

Upholstering ... Under the supervision ot Mr,s. Margaret Watson,

Home FUrnishings SpeCialist, a series or upholstering demonstrations

were given at Forest Station. These demonstrations covered two all

day meetings, at which time a davanport and tour chairs were upholstered and slip covers were planned for several chairs.

- . curtains The Home J'Ul'ntshlng; Specialist gave one demonstra..

tioD on the selection and construction ot curtains suitable tor

every room in the house except the kitchen. This demonstration was

very helpful as well as interesting.

Miscellaneous - During the months ot November and December each

year the agent has a series ot demonstrations on household articles

that will make attractive gitts. Tnis has proven to be one of the

moet interesting demonstrations ot the year, while perhaps not the

most important, the egent teels tht this type ot work has had a

e erta! n value.

!he making ot trays, waste baskets, toot stools, magazine racks,

spice shelves, and covers for cans such as Dutch Cleanser have helped

to pep up various groups and to add to the Christmas spirit.

w. P. A. Work:

Two meetings were held .1th the W. P. A. and N. Y. A. girls

in Douglas. At this time demonstrations were given on the making

ot homemade rugs. As a result of this demonstration Miss RUth

Wickstrom used material which belongs to the agent tor lemonstration

rugs and the Agent 1s to have the rugs when their work ends.

Fairs:

The Agent attended the Willcox Flower Show. The rural groups

supported the Flower Show, furnishing most of the exhibits but did not help with the organization ot the Flower Show this year.

I The Agent attended the st. David Local Fair, giving assistance where needed. The exhibits were judged by Mrs. Flossie Wills

Barmes.

Four days were spent in connection with the Cochise County Fair in Douglas. 'Having a new head or the foods department it was necessary for the agent to give close superVision to the handling ot the exhibts ot this department. Three fair committee meetings were attended and plans were made for another year.

Two days were spent in Tempe visi ting and. assisting at the 4-H

Fair.

Bertha Virmond, Cochise County, Arizona. 1937.

- - 1'1 -

-One Farm Bureau meeting at stewart was attended end the County

lam Bureau picnio, en annual artair, at which time the 4-H clubs

or the count.y were asked to assist.

The annual Extension Conterence was attended early in January.

Each year the Children's Home is given some attention. Everr

rural group makes some kind ot a donation. This year turn1 ture was

purchased tor the younger children, one quilt and twenty undergarments were sent in the Christmas box. 150 quarts ot canned products were

sent. While this is not a part of the agent's work she has cooperated in any way possible.

Club Houses:

An interesting part ot the agent's unclassified work has beeD spent in helping Var! oua clubs to obtain and equip club rooms. The

DOUble Adobe Homemaker. haTe spent $150.00 for eqUipment tor their Club

House. This Club room was the original school room. Since it is no longer needed tor this purpose the school board has given the club a lease on the building tor a8 long as they will use and maintain the roOM. They have table service tor sixty and a new supply of steel folding chairs which makes their room Tery attractive and usable. This building 1s free for the use ot any group who will be responsible.

lbe Frontier Homemakers have added a kitchen to their Club House.

The Sulphur Springs ladies have improved the schoolhouse that is loaned to them by the county. The stewart ladies have acquired a school room an have built tables tor their convenience. They are planning

Bel:_tha Virmond, Cochise County. Arizona. 19·37. - 18 -

additional improvements during the winter months.

Magazines:

The agent haa collected magazines from every source and every month distributes these magzlne8 and papers to groups where there

18'a shortage ot reading material.

News Writing:

Mrs. Mernice Murphr has had a series ot meetings in the count,..

February 26th. April 16th and Mal" 7th. Two ot these meetis at the

Pearce High School with a total of 216 attending. In8ruction was given on the preparation ot news items and other subjects ot interest to classes in journalism. In the evenings Mrs. Murphy met with the news writing group, under the direction ot Mrs. W. S. Sni th who has charge ot a W. P. A. project in Douglas. One forenoon was spent in the prepara- tiOD ot radio material tor the Cochise County Historical Characters to be used for a Chber of Commerce braodcast but written by the above group. Other assistance has been given the news writing group through correspondence.

Stewart Garden Club:

The Stewart Garden Club is an outgrowth or the stewart Homemaker's.

They have had their own set of officers and have held independent meetings.

This group was organized three years ago with Mrs. C. C. Gordon as president and most of the sucoess ot this club is due to her leadershipo

Jard improvement eontesta have been held each year. This contest

has been judged in connection with the Willcox Flower Show until

this year. This year the women cooperated with the Willcox Flower

Show but 'yards were judged in their own group. This club has kept

the sick and shutOins supplied with flowers. They have supplied

flowers for church serVice, funerals, school and social functions.

Through the efforts ot this club seed houses allover tne country have

supplied seeds for distribution. Willcox merchants have helped by

furnishing bulbs and permitting the women to sell f10wets in their

store windows each Saturday. The president ot this club was respons-

ible tor collecting and transporting a flower collection eighty miles

to the County Fair.

Willcox Woman's Club:

One demonstration was given to the Willcox Woman's Club on the

-Attractive Eltchen·.

Cochise County History:

Especially interesting '0 the agent were two meetings held at

Portal. One ot these at the home ot • .Tohn Hand. At this time he

entertained the group by telling of the early history of Cochise County,

showing his Indian exhibits and relics ot various kinds.

Mr. Duffner entertained the 4-H Club, as well as the wamena group,

talking about butterflies and other nature studies and other collections

- Which he has in his possession.

Annual Leave:

The agent has spent lass than ten months in actual work during the past twelve months. Last December the county was fortunate in sending two 4-H girls to the National 4-H Club Congress in Chicago.

Since the Agent had not used her vacation she took the month or

December in order to go with the girls to Chicago. This was done at her own expense and charged to annual leave.

In July a trip was made to Alaska, using more than the usual

thirty days. This was especially Interesting as the Extension Work and 4-H Clubs were visited besides the usual tourist sights.

4-H CLUB WORK

History - 4-H Clubs have been organized and continued work under the Home Demonstration Agent linee 1930. Previous annual report. giTe a deteiled history ot TariOU8 clubs, enrollments and completi ons.

4-H Club Work has continued to grow until such clubs have been scattered over the greater part of the rural districts in the County.

OUr Club Work is organized as winter clubs and summer clubs. The winter clubs are usually under the leadership ot the local teacher.

Since most ot our children are carried tram home to school on the bus it is necessary to use school time tor the bus1ness meetings and instruction in project work. Atter this has been Qutlined- the members do most at the actue.l work in the hane. In some ways the orgenization ot 4-R Clubs within e. rural school has the advantage ot having the children together and on time. From the other standpoint the Agent has very little to say concerning the selection ot leaders.

It has been necessary to use new material almost every year, as the turn-over of teachers in rural districts is very rapid. one rural school had three teachers during the nine months that wa were trying to ca1'l7 on Club Work.

During the summer Club Work is organized under the leadership of some woman in the com:nuni ty who is willing to take on the responslbility"

SUch club. are usually devoted to work in canning, food preparation,

baking and sewing. Achievement days are held twice a year, in

August to care for the summer clubs end in April and 1'lB.y to care

tor the winter clubs.

Club Work has been organized in the following communities:

St. David, Dragoon. stewart, Sulphur Springs, Pearce, Webb,

Elfrida, Whitewater, Texas School, Frontier, DOUble Adobe, Forest

Station, Rucker Canyon, and Portal. And the following projects

have been completed: garment making, callIling, handicraft, music

appreciation, health, meal planning, baking and Social Progress

Clubs.

So far we have not been able to have a countywide achievement

day or 4-H talr. However, the above clubs have taken part in the

county tairs, the local tairs, farm exhibits and state contests.

In each club an effort has been :n:e.de to train judging tes and

demonstration teams. Aocording to the map on page a general

idea at 4-H activities can be seen at a glance. Following is a

history of each project together with enrollment and eompletloDS

4-8 Rking clubs in this county have been tew and far between.

Small groups ot older girla have completed the project tram time to

time. McNeal leads wi th three baking clubs completed.

Ho.ever. the past year fiss Gwendolin, a young and enthusiastic

leader organized a baking club composed ot six members. These girls

ecmpleted their work 100% and trained two demonstration teams. I The

demonstration team ot this club ceted against the other toods

teams ot the county and was given second plaee. Special 8tress was placed on the judging ot baking products. Gwendolin Mills and Rose

Grantham placed tirst and competed in the state judging contest. Rose

4-]1 Canning

4-H Canning clubs haTe been organized in this county for the past six years. The first canning in the county was done by the

4-H canning clubs at McNeal. These clubs haTe a record of finishing

100% every year in which they entered enrollments. Double Adobe, in the center ot the agricultural section ot the county, has carried canning as a project tor older girls for six years. This year,. due to the absence of the agent during the canning months, the girls were not organized as they should haTe been and the work was carried on by ind!v1duals. Daphna Thurman, who has been an outstanding canner, acted as leader and got together a canning exhibit tor the county tair. The girls trom this eamnuni ty placed second on their county exhibit. '!he Webb girls turned in a very poor canplation but much family canning was done and awards won by Thelma Gardner and

Gwendolin Mills.

Miss Margaret Ellis has been the outstanding eanning girl in the county tor several years. She is sixteen years old and has completed six years in canning. For the past three years she has sent exhibits to Chicago and hae WOD 1. third and a second ribbon trom the National

Contest. She is again offering an exhibit in meat for this exhibit.

She has WOD a total ot 106 ribbons in local. county and state competi tion. at these she has only received two white ribbons. She has exhibited in the county fair in the adult department, in the 4-H department and in the junior department. She has just been awarded the state honors in canning and will rece!ve the Kerr Award ot a trip to

the National 4-H Club Congress in Chicago. Other activities ot

Margaret Ellis .ill be discovered under other projects. Margaret

Ellis end Dorothy Pregenzer took part in a judging contest in the state contest in judging canning. Each ot the girls placed second in their clas8 and second as a t.

The Agent has devoted six days to junior canning club work.

 Heta MANAG!W:NT

The one disappointment ot the 4-H report tor Cochise CountJ

18 centered around the Home Manegement Club organized In the

Pearce High School. The girls or this high school were turned

over to the Agent tor th18 club work. There was no coo, eratlon on the part ot the principle or the teaeer and as little as could be possible by the girls themselves. The agent gave more time to this club than any other club in the county andNas generously assisted uy Miss Thelma Huber, Home Management Specialist. The club was simply left as a tailure and we have no teport to make other than the above.

4-H HANDICRAFT ewes

The handicraft clubs in this county have been running two

yeers. Checking the history or this proJect it is interesting

to note that the two clubs which were enrolled have completed

100%.

This past year six clubs were organized wih 51 boys and 5

girls enrolled. The handicraft clubs were again completed lO

'!his i8 an unusual record in this county. During the club yea

357 articles were completed. Besides the required work various clubs

made models tor the Home Demonstration Agent until she has a complete

kit of the first year work and several problems included in the

second year. Seven demonstration teams were trained in this proJect,

two at Double Adobe, three at Texas School and two at Dragoon. The

Texas School team was rated the highest but were not able to give

their demonstration at the Round-Up in Tucson. The boys, however,

. - were awarded a tree trip to the Round-Up.

Achievement days were held in all six communities at which time

Mr. H: R. Baker, Club SpeCialist, was present and judged the

demonstration teams and various artioles made by the boys and girls.

4-iI BEAL'm CLUBS

The history of 4-H Health Clubs extends farther back than the

present agent's time. These clubs were an outgrowth of the old

Xeep-Growing clubs and fran one to six health clubs have been runni ng

for the past eight rears.

4-H health clubs were orgenized and completed, at Forest Station,

Portal, Double Adobe and Stewart. 28 boys and 37 girls were enrolled

in this project and completed 100%. The girls and boys are enrolled

according to their years in club work in first, second. third or

fourth year health. In order to make it possible for the leader to

carry on as a group very often a first year health girl will be doing

fourth year subject matter and very otten next year a fourth year girls will be doing first year subject matter. This has worked out fairly

we11 ancl has relieved the eader who 1s already bU81 and finds that the health program is ratber heavy.

Health demonstration teams were trained at Double Adobe. and at

Portal. These teams competed tor county honors and the first place went to Double Adobe in the county and these boys entered the state demonstration team contest, placing first on the bking 01' a Fly Trap."

Health chemplons were selected by the county nurse. Ruth Reed of

Portal and Roseanna Boeckmann of Double Adobe were declared the healthiest iirls. Eugene Hill of Double Adobe and lesus Rivera of Forest Station were chosen hethiest boys. Each of the girls placed second in their

..H SOCIAL PROGRESS CLUB

Last year the county entered the Social Progress Oontest for

the state. Double Adobe placed first for the county and received

the usual award.

This year they decided to try tor state honors. Together with tour other groups in the county they declared their intentions tor trying tor this contest early in the year. Bouble Adobe was' selected as the outstanding club in the state and the Agent 1s very proud of the record that they have made. They have completed the required work in sewing, handicraft, music appreCiation, health and landscaping work.

In addition to the requirements various community activities were carried on. They raised money tor a school picnic one one occaSion.

Another they paid a debt- 'on·-their schoolhouse ot t62.50. They raised a fund tor flowers for their Sick students by selling candy at noon.

They raised $10.00 for flood sufferers by a Similar means. They purchased a sewing machine for the school. They made attractive

Christmas gifts for every mother in the communi Y. They planted attractive trees in their school yard and they saved the mail route by writing one hundred letter which demanded answers. They have decorated tor parties ot the Homemaker's club and of the Farm Bureau. They have

.- washed the dishes tor the Homemaker's Club and the Farm Bureauo They

members to the 4-H raised the money to send twenty-ro of their club

chaperoned by their leaders, Mrs. Viola Johnson and Mrs. Lucy

Thurman.

Assisting the leaders ot this club Mrs. Frank A. Murphy,

clerk of the school board. has given this club publicity in the

newspapers, over the radio and personally collected the material

necessary for making an ensnsive report to the I1CA. The whole

community is very proud ot the work that has been accomplished in

this cammluity during the past year. A scrap book has been filled

out and forwarded to the National contest.

.JUNI OR 4-H CLUBS

Because it was neClessary to do something for the younger members in the rural schools, special 4-H Health clubs were

organized with children under ten years or age. No cr6dit haa

been taken tor this work and they were not given the official

4·H Club pin but they were so enthusiastic over their work and

gave such wndertul cooperation that we teel they will be very worthwhile club members when they do reach the age of ten.

Miscellaneous 4-H Club Work

During the' year each club has made an effort to send their

outstanding club member to the 4-H Bound-Up in Tucson. Special mention should be made of the Webb Baking Club. These girls

worked and secured funds by giying dances to pay, not only their

own way to Tucson, but also the outstanding demonstration team in

foods work. While this club competed for this honor themselves it was lost to a neighboring group. In addition to this $10.00 they

gave the Agent an additional $10.00 to pay the gasoline necessary

to make the trip to TUcson with the bus loaned by the Pearce High

School.

Another group that should be mentioned on this occasion is a

group of canning girls from Double A.dobe. llii s group had sent an

exhibit to Chicago two years ago and won $40.00. The last $10.00

of this premium money was given to the Agent to help pay expenses

of the driver of this bus, the emergencies and any other needed

expense. Through the efforts of these girls allot the club members

and their leaders in this county, except the Double Adobe group were

taken to Tucson.

While not a leader, assistance has been given by Mr. R. H.

this allson. For the past four years he has left his work and taken

He group os children to Tucson to the 4-H Round-Up wi thout any payo

has acted as chaperone for the boys and has assisted in every way

ossible to make Club Week a success.

The 4-H clubs of the county assisted the Farm Bureau by

putting on a 4-H Club meeting at their annual farm ureau picnic.

This was in charge of Freddie Bell of Double Adobe, assisted by

club members from over the county. The girls were asked to

repeat their dress revue at the 4-H Club RoundMUp.

During the 4-H Club Round-Up it was interesting to note that

the five Chicago Trip Winners from this County were all present

and doing their bit to help younger members in H Club Work.

The Texas 4-5 Camp club, a club which is now running and not

reported elsewhaee in this outline, won outstanding honors in a

County Contest carried on at the, Cochise County Fair. An award was offered ot $7.50 tor the best collection of native grasses mounted for exhibition purposes. This small group of girls and

boys made a collection of g5 specimens, placins first and winning the

ooveted $7.50.

The Texas Club furnished the music for the annual farm bureau picnic. The responded with an original 4-H Club song.

Gwendolln Mills and Mary Jane Patterson represented the county in an entertainment number at the annual dress revue contest in

Tucson.

- OUTLOOi AND RID O:MMENDATI ONS :

If the number of requests which have been received for Home

Demonstration Work is indicative of the outlook there should be

\ plenty of opportunl ty for work in 1938.

One Relief Society has withdrawn because of a heavy church

program. Two others have asked for the time. Otherwise all work

will continue as organized and using the same jl-:;Jic(', locations

and subject matter. More Specielist help will be asked for.

Leaders meetings in both the South and North Sections for

adults as well as 4-H Leaders should be held.

The Agent feels that more time should be spent with communi-

ties which are not organized. These communities are small and at

same distance fram the office and from each other. This would in-

volve additional expense in mileage and much additional time to do

the job, but the Agent feels that the older organizations should

carry on alone and that her efforts should be $pent on new contacts,

thus giving the whole county the benefit ot extension work and not

only the more thickly settled conmunities.
