Research work submitted for publication consideration should not merely limited to conceptualisation of economics and behavioral devlopments but comprise interdisciplinary and multi-facet approaches to economics and behavioral theories and practices as well as general transformations in the fileds. Scope of the JEBS includes: subjects of managerial economics, financial economics, development economics, finance, economics, financial psychology, strategic management, organizational behavior, human behavior, marketing, human resource management and behavioral finance. Author(s) should declare that work submitted to the journal is original, not under consideration for publication by another journal, and that all listed authors approve its submission to JEBS. Author (s) can submit: Research Paper, Conceptual Paper, Case Studies and Book Review. Journal received research submission related to all aspects of major themes and tracks. All submitted papers were first assessed by the editorial team for relevance and originality of the work and blindly peer reviewed by the external reviewers depending on the subject matter of the paper. After the rigorous peer-review process, the submitted papers were selected based on originality, significance, and clarity of the purpose. The current issue of JEBS comprises of papers of scholars from South Africa, Ghana, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Australia and Oman. Employee retention factors, Nigeria’s contributions to the African Union, entrepreneurial barriers, a thematic analysis, stakeholder engagement as a core management function, South Africa’s youth unemployment dilemma, influence of brand trust, brand familiarity & brand experience on brand attachment, internal and external factors of future returns in the banking business, nexus of working capital management and firm performance, does financial development lead to poverty reduction, influence of national culture on latent entrepreneurs, behavioural ethics, a review of quality management systems, a robust application of the arbitrage pricing theory, awareness of ecological economics, perceptions on social risk, buying behaviour, effect of psychological capital on entrepreneurial intention, changing the structure of Mpumalanga economy through industrialization, technology-enhanced knowledge management, bank failure prediction model and generation Y-turnover were some of the major practices and concepts examined in these studies. Ezeuduji*, Thandokazi Lulu Mbane University of Zululand, South Africa Cape Peninsula University of Technology, South Africa [email protected]*, [email protected] Abstract: High turnover of employees in the hotel sector has been widely reported in academic papers. This high turnover has associated costs, such as financial costs, inconsistency in delivering service quality, and probable loss of customer loyalty. This empirical study investigates hotel employees’ responses to statements that relate to work conditions that support employee retention. Selected three, four and five star hotels in Cape Town, South Africa participated in this study. A structured respondent-completed questionnaire was used to collect data that were subjected to descriptive, bivariate and multivariate analyses. Result highlights suggest that hotel employees, dominated by the female population, are mostly not so desperate to leave their employment soon, however not many of them have worked in the hotel for more than five years. There are positive inter-correlations among ‘employee retention’ factor and other factors that relate to work conditions that support employee retention (compensation, employee development, work engagement, work relations, and working hours). Mr. Jan Kavan, President of the 57th Session of the General Assembly, at the Commemoration Ceremony for Major-General Joseph Nanven Garba Mr. Secretary General, Excellencies, Distinguished Delegates, Ladies and Gentlemen, I have the honour to open this ceremony to commemorate the memory of a former colleague, Major-General Joseph Nanven Garba, who presided over the 44th session of the United Nations General Assembly from 1989 to 1990. The distinguished list of speakers at this ceremony is a demonstration of tribute to his memory. Though I did not have the pleasure to know him personally, he was, by all accounts, an extraordinary person, a man of many talents, who had received many distinctions and awards and who had contributed richly to the work of the United Nations. During his life time, he combined a distinguished military and diplomatic career. He participated in the United Nations Peace Keeping Force in India and Pakistan in the years 1965-1966. He was Nigeria's Foreign Affairs Minister during the period 1975 to 1978 and led his country's delegation to the United Nations General Assembly. General Garba was also an author. Amongst his many works, I would like to mention one entitled "The Honour to Serve: Relflections on Nigeria's Presidency of the 44th UN General Assembly "(1993). During his Presidency of the General Assembly, he facilitated world peace and security through obtaining consensus resolutions on the subjects of poverty, drug trafficking and apartheid.

    Chapter One General Presentation 1.1 Introduction The eruption of most territorial conflicts around the world generally stems from ideological or religious differences, nationalism, colonialism, and competition for natural resources. While some easily degenerate into prolonged conflicts or wars that eventually involve the use of heavy weaponry, others get settled through diplomatic moves, coercion by the international agencies or agreements. With a compromised historical heritage, it is not surprising that post-colonial Cameroon and Nigeria were marred by a number of border disputes but the territorial claim surrounding the Bakassi Peninsula stands unique; not only was it the most serious of all disputes between the two countries, but it ended in the most spectacularly unexpected manner against all odds. The Bakassi crisis took public stage when it became clear that it was very rich in natural gas, petroleum and fishing. It was even more so after the discovery of potential oil reserves in its surroundings. The mounting of tension between the two countries in the 1990s urged the Cameroonian government to adopt a legal approach by filing a law suit to the ICJ against the Nigerian Federation on March 24, 1994 in which Cameroon sought an injunction for the expulsion of Nigerian forces, which was said to be occupying the territory. Nevertheless, the conflict can be traced back to the colonial era. With the Natives’ loss of control over their lands in the Berlin Conference of 1884-85, new boundaries emerged that did not consider ethnic groupings. These borders were sustained through agreements between the colonial powers, followed by the League of Nations and lastly the UN.

On one hand, South Africa’s dominance in Africa’s political-economic transformation since 1994 is reflected mostly in its business expansion in Africa. Nigeria, on the other hand, remains significant having only just been upstaged by South Africa as Africa’s largest economy, and with the huge market its population provides for investors. Notwithstanding intermittent diplomatic altercations between both countries, there has been rising trade and investment relations between the two regional powers especially since the post-apartheid era. However, this is tilted in favour of South Africa because of its more capitalized economy and significant strength in trade investment in Africa. This skewed economic relationship between both regional powers has given South Africa a major trade and investment advantage over Nigeria which also reflects in the recurring political rivalry between both countries. The authors stress that South Africa’s economic incursion and dominance in the continent furthers a growing perception of its regional hegemonic and sub-imperial power aspirations which is becoming more real than imagined.
