Broadband Service Providers Association (BSPA) Written Comments Pursuant to: DOJ Antitrust Division Telecommunications Symposium November 29, 2007 Voice, Video and Broadband: The Changing Competitive Landscape and Its Impact on Consumers. Respectfully Submitted By: John Goodman, Executive Director, BSPA 1601 K Street, Washington DC, 20006 202-661-3945 1 Broadband Service Providers Association (BSPA) Written Comments Pursuant to: DOJ Antitrust Division Telecommunications Symposium – November 29, 2007 Voice, Video and Broadband: The Changing Competitive Landscape and Its Impact on Consumers. Members of the Broadband Service Providers Association (BSPA) deploy and operate facilities-based, advanced, last-mile broadband networks for the delivery of innovative bundles of voice, multichannel/on-demand video, and high-speed data/Internet services directly to homes and small businesses across the country.1 The BSPA’s mission is to promote and support the development of a competitive, facilities-based, broadband industry that will increase infrastructure investment, create customer choice, lower prices, and provide critical network diversity. I. The Competitive Position of Wireline Networks Delivering Bundled Voice, Video and Data Services. In the last twelve years, particularly since passage of the Telecommunications Act of 1996,2 new competitors, such as Broadband Service Providers (BSPs), have established a sustained and unique position in the multichannel video programming distribution market. As providers of state-of-the-art cable, telephone, and Internet service over advanced local networks in many urban, suburban and rural areas throughout the country, BSPs are key examples of the entry of new, facilities-based competitors envisioned by the 1996 Act. The interconnection provisions of the 1996 Act created the opportunity for new entrants, like BSPs, to offer telephone service.

Telecommunications Provider Locator This report lists the contact information, primary telecommunications business and service(s) offered by 6,493 telecommunications providers. The last report was released March 13, 2009.1 The information in this report is drawn from providers’ Telecommunications Reporting Worksheets (FCC Form 499-A). It can be used by customers to identify and locate telecommunications providers, by telecommunications providers to identify and locate others in the industry, and by equipment vendors to identify potential customers. Virtually all providers of telecommunications must file FCC Form 499-A each year.2 These forms are not filed with the FCC but rather with the Universal Service Administrative Company (USAC), which serves as the data collection agent. The pool of filers contained in this edition consists of companies that operated and collected revenue during 2007, as well as new companies that file the form to fulfill the Commission’s registration requirement.3 Information from filings received by USAC after October 13, 2008, and from filings that were incomplete has been excluded from this report.

  • Internet Connectivity and Utilization in Tennessee 2016
Department of Economic and Community Development Randy Boyd Bill Haslam Commissioner Governor July 19, 2016 Team Tennessee, As I traveled across Tennessee in my first few months as TNECD commissioner last year and held town hall “listening” sessions, over half of each conversation focused on increasing broadband access. After subsequent conversations with businesses, telecommunications industry stakeholders and legislators, we found there was general disagreement about Tennessee’s broadband access and utilization needs. We commissioned this report from leading consultants in the field to help answer four basic questions: What is the technical definition of broadband? How many Tennesseans do not have access to broadband? What is the cost of bringing broadband to Tennesseans that do not have it? What are best practices and lessons learned for promulgating broadband from around the country? The consultants’ study also included a robust, live assessment of Tennessee’s broadband access. More than 23,000 Tennessee households and businesses participated in the assessment. Businesses participating in the assessment said broadband enabled 43 percent of all net new jobs and 66 percent of revenues. In addition, 34 percent of businesses classified broadband as essential to selecting their location, and 56 percent noted that it was essential to remain in their location. Sixteen percent of economic development agencies reported that businesses frequently chose not to locate in an area due to insufficient broadband. It is clear that broadband is critical to the economic future of Tennessee. Broadband already significantly contributes to Tennessee’s economy. When a community lacks adequate access, economic opportunities are lost. Attached are an executive summary and three reports provided by our consultants: Internet Connectivity and Utilization – Benchmarks current access and utilization.
