The researchers are confident that a diagnostic test can be developed to identify newborns at risk and envision treatments to protect them during the vulnerable period. Analysing the close connection Native Americans shared with the natural environment Austin hailed her reinterpretation of poetic verse as “the very pulse of emerging American consciousness” (11).

  • Leadership and Turnaround Strategy
BAM 2014 This paper is from the BAM 2014 Conference Proceedings About BAM The British Academy of Management (BAM) is the leading authority on the academic field of management in the UK, supporting and representing the community of scholars and engaging with international peers. http://www.bam.ac.uk/ Introduction This article examines the sector-confirmed successful turnaround of a large metropolitan criminal justice organisation following the arrival of a new leader. It will consider leadership behaviours, which had a significant impact in order to explore the difference a leader, might make to organisational transformation or turnaround strategy. In 2009, staff morale was low and target culture deeply resented. Since a poorly planned and executed merger of a number of services in 2001, there had been three previous leaders and a short period under a Specialist Performance Improvement Action Team. In an attempt to address the performance deficits, there had been three significant structural re-organisations, which, in the context of additional legislative changes, had negatively impacted on employees’ attitude both to change and senior management as well as not achieving the required performance improvements. This was the environment into which the leader was invited by the appropriate state ministry, with a remit to address the challenges of a troubled organisation. Taking the personal account of the leader, this article will filter that personal narrative and test assumptions about the effect of leadership skills on transformational change. The narrative correlation of elite interview with public empirical results, participant observation and theoretical analysis provides a unique and innovative lens through which to consider corporate change.

ISBN 978-92-64-04565-1 International Migration Outlook SOPEMI – 2008 Edition © OECD 2008 PART III Return Migration: A New Perspective* * This paper was written by Jean-Christophe Dumont and Gilles Spielvogel (OECD). It benefited from a contribution by Claire André (ENSAE). The Secretariat has compiled information from member countries by means of a questionnaire, and has also made use of studies produced for an expert meeting on “Return Migration and Development”, Paris, 12 November 2007. 161 III. RETURN MIGRATION: A NEW PERSPECTIVE Introduction For many immigrants, returning home is a prospect they cherish and one that sustains them during their migration history. Ties with the home country, even if stretched, keep this aspiration alive. Recently arrived migrants, or those arriving under temporary programmes, lend themselves naturally to these return dynamics. Yet in fact some will return home and others will not; some will move on to a new destination, while others will be caught up in a cycle of circular migration. While return migration is a major component of migratory flows, our knowledge of it is still fragmentary. What is the scope and nature of return migration? Are young people, women, or skilled workers more likely to return home? Why do some migrants settle permanently in the host country, while others choose to stay only a short time? What role should immigration policies play in this respect? Can return migration be well managed? Finally, what is their impact on the economic development of the home country? These questions lie at the core of current issues relating to international migration management, from the viewpoint of host countries and home countries alike.

  • LINER NOTES Recorded Anthology of American Music, Inc
New World Records 80202 Songs of the Civil War By Charles Hamm The Civil War of 1861-65 was the single most dramatic event in the history of the United States, with the possible exception of World War II. The fighting, the carnage, the brutal effects on soldier and civilian were unmatched by any other war in American history. In his preface to Flawed Victory; a New Perspective on the Civil War, James P. Shenton writes: No event in American history had more devastating results than the Civil War. For four years the nation was wracked by a seemingly endless blood letting. When the guns finally fell silent in the spring of 1865, more than 630,000 Americans had died. Americans had inflicted upon one another more casualties than had ever been sustained in a previous, or subsequent, foreign war. (In comparison, some 606,000 Americans were killed in all other conflicts from the French and Indian Wars through Korea.) In the course of the struggle, a war of limited objectives had been translated into total war. The enemy was no longer armies but entire civilian populations....When final defeat engulfed the South, its economy was in shambles; vast stretches of its territory were ruined; and its social institutions rooted in slavery had been smashed....As one contemporary noted, the boundary between the two sections was drawn in blood. Such Northern states as Illinois and Connecticut sent almost fifteen percent of their population to fight the Civil War, and the percentage was even higher in most of the South. It was total war indeed, particularly for less populated areas.

Ornette Coleman and Harmolodics by Matt Lavelle A Thesis submitted to the Graduate School-Newark Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Graduate Program in Jazz History and Research Written and approved under the direction of Dr. Henry Martin ________________________ Newark, New Jersey May 2019 © 2019 Matt Lavelle ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT Ornette Coleman stands as one of the most significant innovators in jazz history. The purpose of my thesis is to show where his innovations came from, how his music functions, and how it impacted other innovators around him. I also delved into the more controversial aspects of his music. At the core of his process was a very personal philosophical and musical theory he invented which he called Harmolodics. Harmolodics was derived from the music of Charlie Parker and Coleman’s need to challenge conventional Western music theory in pursuit of providing direct links between music, nature, and humanity. To build a foundation I research Coleman’s development prior to his famous debut at the Five Spot, focusing on evidence of a direct connection to Charlie Parker. I examine his use of instruments he played other than his primary use of the alto saxophone. His relationships with the piano, guitar, and the musicians that played them are then examined. I then research his use of the bass and drums, and the musicians that played them, so vital to his music. I follow with documentation of the string quartets, woodwind ensembles, and symphonic work, much of which was never recorded.
