1. Purpose of this Guide

The purpose of this guide is to provide details of:

 Library and information services available to social care employees in Cumbria.  Alternative libraries and library partnerships which employees can use.  Other library and information sources (journal and organisation subscriptions, electronic literature databases, useful Web sites, Internet/ literature searching service, etc).

2. Major Libraries in Cumbria for Social Care Employees

2.1 Cumbria Social Care Specialist Library Collection  A specialist social care library collection has been developed between the Adult Social Care Knowledge Management Team and Cumbria Public Libraries.  This collection can be found at Carlisle Public Library, but items can be requested from and sent to other public libraries in the county.  You need to be a member of the public library in order to borrow items from the collection. You can join FREE of charge at any public library, or online at http://www.cumbria.gov.uk/libraries/services/membserv.asp.  A full list of the items held in the library can be found on the e-Library.  If you would like to request specific items to be purchased for the library, please contact Knowledge Management, Tel: 01228 227113, email: [email protected].  Please note that the book budget is limited. Therefore, preference will be given to generic texts that are directly related to adult social care, management or research. 3 2.3 University Hospitals NHS Trust Libraries  Adult Social Care has a Service Level Agreement (SLA) with both North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust and University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Trust to provide social care employees based at the hospitals in Cumbria with a range of library and information services.  Services available include:  An enquiry service  An expert information search service  Document supply and inter-library loans  Training in information search skills  Provision of electronic resources and services, including e-learning  Physical library resources at the Education Centre at the Cumberland Infirmary and the Education Centre at the West Cumberland Hospital  Study, print and photocopying facilities  Further details about these services are available at http://www.library.ncumbria.nhs.uk/index.aspx , or by contacting (01228) 814879, email: [email protected]

3. Library Partnerships in Cumbria

3.1 Cumbria Libraries Network (formerly known as AddLib)  Cumbria Libraries Network (CLN) is a partnership between almost all the libraries in Cumbria.  It means that if you are registered at any of the CLN Cumbria libraries you can also use any of the other libraries in the CLN scheme for reference and study purposes.

3.2 NHS-Public Libraries Partnership  Since 2005, Cumbria and NHS libraries have been working with public libraries to make it easier for NHS and social care employees to access specialist information when it is not always convenient or possible to access it from work.  This means the major public libraries in Cumbria and Lancashire will give NHS and social care employees access to the following resources on production of either an ID card or NHS library membership card:  Free access to PCs and the Internet (initially for a limited period)  Support for information needs  A range of health care books  Referral to local NHS libraries for more complex enquiries  For further details, please contact Carlisle Public Library, Tel: 01228 227310, email: [email protected].

3.3 Passport to Partnership (P2P) Scheme  Passport to Partnership (P2P) is a partnership agreement between the NHS health libraries and Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in Cumbria and Lancashire.  It enables all NHS staff (and some social care staff) working in Cumbria and Lancashire to access the collective health resources in the region.  Staff and students of the participating HEIs are also able to access the resources of all participating libraries. 3.4 Cumbria Higher Education Institutions Library Partnership Scheme (CHELPS)  CHELPS is a co-operative venture between University of Cumbria, Carlisle College, Lakes College and Furness College which entitles library members (students and employees) to have limited borrowing rights from other libraries for free.  In order to use the CHELPS scheme you must first complete an application form at your “home” (i.e. where you are registered to study) library stating which other partner libraries you want to use.

3.5 NoWAL – The North West Academic Libraries Consortium  NoWAL is a consortium of all the UK HEI libraries in Cumbria, Lancashire, , Merseyside and Cheshire. The following libraries are members of NoWAL:   Liverpool Hope University  Liverpool John Moores University  Manchester Metropolitan University  Royal Northern College of Music  University of  University of Cumbria  University of Central Lancashire   All students of NoWAL institutions can use the resources of other member libraries for reference purposes. 4.2 Accessing journals electronically via Athens  Athens is a system providing FREE access through a single log-in to a range of subscription-based electronic information resources, online databases, electronic journals and ebooks.  NICE Evidence Services provides fast access to authoritative health and social care evidence and best practice through a web-based portal.  This is now available to government-funded bodies in England providing social care via OpenAthens. 4.3 Requesting journal articles via the Knowledge Management Team  The Knowledge Management Team can obtain additional journal articles on behalf of Adult Social Care employees where there is a clear link with business needs.  Simply email the following information to [email protected]:  Publication/ journal title  Date of publication  Journal/ issue number  Article title  Author name  Purpose of the request (e.g. to respond to a practice query, to inform a strategy, etc.)  Wherever possible, requests will be responded to within 5 working days. 7. Literature/ Internet Searching Service

 Are you:  Working on an adult social care project and want to know if any other organisations have already done something similar?  Supporting a service user with a specific condition or need that you are unfamiliar with?  Developing a new adult social care procedure or strategy and want to ensure that you consider current best practice and/or research evidence?  Planning a research study and want to know what work has already been done in that field?  If so, the Knowledge Management Team can help by undertaking an Internet and/or literature search on your behalf.  Wherever possible, searches are completed within 10 working days.  Unfortunately searches for student projects cannot be undertaken, but the Knowledge Management Team can provide advice and support on developing effective search strategies.
