FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Practice Area and Driving Range www.napervilleparks.org News | Events Calendar | Contact FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE July 9, 2021 Contact: Sameera Luthman, Director of Marketing and Communications, 630-848-3570, [email protected] Kevin Carlson, Superintendent of Golf Operations, 630-848-5062, [email protected] Practice Area and Driving Range Renovation at Naperbrook Golf Course to begin in early August Driving range and practice green to close August 2 for construction; golf course to remain open Naperville Park District plans to renovate the driving range and practice green at Naperbrook Golf Course to improve and expand these areas. The project is expected to begin in early August and to continue for 4-6 weeks, depending on the weather. The driving range will open in early- to mid-September after construction is complete, using the all-weather mats. The turf range tee and practice green will not open until late spring 2022. The golf course at Naperbrook will remain open during construction, with some adjustments in traffic patterns around the back of the clubhouse to accommodate large equipment. The scope of the project is similar to that of the improvement project completed at Springbrook Golf Course in 2016. The current range tee will be removed and a new 27,000 square foot tee will be constructed. The tee will be slightly raised from the previous location to provide better sightlines, and will be seeded with HGT bluegrass, which will provide an excellent hitting surface and wear tolerance, similar to the turf tee at Springbrook. The two small practice greens will be removed and a new 12,000 square foot green will be constructed, adding needed space for putting and chipping. A practice bunker will also be constructed next to the range tee to provide short game and full swing options for practicing from the sand. A new shed for the range ball dispenser will be added behind the clubhouse. Springbrook Golf Course also will undergo improvements this year, with the goal to renovate its drainage system. The project will begin in September, with details being announced later this summer. The work will be limited to one hole each day, allowing most of the course to remain open during construction. ### About the Naperville Park District: Created in 1966, the Naperville Park District is an independent, municipal agency serving the recreation needs of its residents. The District is one of only 1% of park districts across the country to be nationally accredited through the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA). About Springbrook and Naperbrook Golf Courses: Springbrook and Naperbrook Golf Courses are owned and operated by the Naperville Park District. Founded in 1974, Springbrook Golf Course features a challenging, 18-hole championship golf course, a 28-stall natural turf driving range, two practice putting greens and a short game practice green with bunkers. Naperbrook Golf Course opened in 1991 and offers a links-style, par-72, 18-hole course, a 10-acre driving range, a separate lesson tee, and 2 practice putting greens. Golf lessons are taught by experienced, on-staff professionals at both courses. Each clubhouse features a golf shop, a food service area that serves a wide variety of snacks and beverages, and a relaxing outdoor patio. The Bermuda grass is growing, allowing us to open the driving range tee and the new short game area this month. In April, the Men’s Member/Member Championship scheduled for April 9-10 is full. All golf leagues are wrapping up their main tournament events this month, and we all look forward to hopefully being back to normal in the fall with shotgun starts and luncheons. It’s based on such a simple principle; simply hole out in as few strokes as possible, but unfortunately, this is much harder than it sounds? So what makes this game so difficult? From my experience, the more I play this game the more I realize that golf’s difficulty comes from the scale of movements and mis-movements that a player makes. While you might think you made the same swing you normally do, a couple millimeters of change above, below, left, or right of the ball at contact can completely change the outcome of your shot. Similarly, two or three degrees of adjustment in how the club strikes the ball can be the difference between your shot flying down the fairway or slicing into the water. This required level of precision, in my opinion, is frustrating for a lot of golfers and is the single biggest limitation of a player’s improvement. Although these small physical changes in each swing dramatically affect your round, this really is what makes the game fun and satisfying to play at a high level.
