JACKSONVILLE JUMBO SHRIMP GAME NOTES Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (19-29, 47-69) at Pensacola Blue Wahoos Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp – Double-A Affiliate of the Miami Marlins Proud Member of the Southern League of Professional Baseball Southern League Champions 1996, 2001, 2005, 2009, 2010, 2014 Tuesday August 14, 2018 – 7:35 p.m. ET / 6:35 p.m. CT Blue Wahoos Stadium – Pensacola, Florida Shrimp: LHP McKenzie Mills (0-0, 0.00) vs. Wahoos: LHP Seth Varner (7-2, 3.01) Game #117 – Road Game #60 (23-36) Last Game: Mississippi Braves left-hander Kyle Muller struck out 10 batters in 5 2/3 innings, while left fielder Travis Demeritte, first baseman Tyler Marlette, and right fielder Connor Lien each homered in the visitors’ 6-4 win over the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp. The Braves (25-23 second half, 54-64 second half) took the lead when Demeritte led off the second inning with a home run to left field off Jacksonville right-hander Cody Poteet (2-10). Demeritte also began a fourth-inning rally with a leadoff single, before Marlette hit a two-run home run to left field. Catcher Carlos Martinez then singled, and Lien hit his third home run in two games to left field, making it 5-0. Mississippi has hit eight homers in the last three games. In his second Double-A start, Muller (2-0) recorded nine of his first 11 outs on strikeouts. With a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning, he walked shortstop Joe Dunand and hit first baseman John Silviano with one out, before catcher Rodrigo Vigil hit a two-out, three-run home run to left field – his first at home since the home opener exactly four months earlier. Muller did not allow another run, yielding four hits and two walks. Making his first home start since June 29, Poteet allowed five earned runs on six hits and three walks with one strikeout in five innings. Right-hander Jose Pena began the top of the sixth inning and hit Lien with one out. Lien stole second base and scored on shortstop Ray-Patrick Didder’s RBI single to center field. Pena lasted two innings, allowing two hits and two walks with one strikeout, before left- hander Miguel Del Pozo and right-hander Kyle Keller pitched hitless single innings. Right-hander Jason Hursh pitched the last two innings and allowed center fielder Monte Harrison’s ninth-inning RBI single before recording the final two outs for his second save, forcing a rubber match in Sunday’s series finale. Brinson has been on Miami’s disabled list since July 4 with a right hip bone bruise. Prior to his injury, Brinson had played in 84 games for the Marlins hitting .186 with 10 home runs and 30 runs batted in, and he was Miami’s Opening Day centerfielder. Mills Makes Double-A/Marlins Org Debut: Tonight left-handed starting pitcher McKenzie Mills makes his Double-A and Marlins organization debut as he starts for the Jumbo Shrimp against the Blue Wahoos. Mills was just acquired by the Marlins on Friday August 10 from the Philadelphia Phillies in a trade in exchange for first baseman Justin Bour. Mills had spent all of 2018 with the High-A Clearwater Threshers in the Florida State League, going 2-5 with a 3.51 ERA in 20 games and 16 starts, striking out 85 batters in 89 and two-thirds innings of work. This is the second straight season that Mills has been traded, he also was traded on July 28, 2017 from the Washington Nationals to the Phillies in exchange for left fielder Howie Kendrick. Mills was originally selected by the Nationals in the 18th round of the 2014 draft out of Sprayberry High School in Marietta, Georgia. Just in Twine: Justin Twine continues to swing a hot bat for the Jumbo Shrimp. Twine has hit safely in 20 of 21 games he’s played for Jacksonville. Overall Twine is hitting .412 (35-for-85) with four home runs and 15 runs batted in, and 12 of the 20 games he’s hit safely have been multi-hit games. In the last series, Twine is hitting .474 (9-for-19) with three straight multi-hit games. Shrimp Have Prospects: On the roster, the Jumbo Shrimp have five players who were listed by MLB.com as Top 30 Miami Marlins prospects for the 2018 season: OF Monte Harrison (1), RHP Nick Neidert (3), OF Brian Miller (11), Joe Dunand (23), and Robert Dugger (24). Three of these players came in offseason trades (Harrison, Neidert, Dugger), while Miller and Dunand were two of the first three players selected by the Marlins in the 2017 draft.
