The Canadian Nurses Association has highlighted that this will be a very special Nursing Week because the World Health Organization designated 2020 as the “Year of the Nurse and Midwife”. This is to honour the 200th anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth. Last year, so many SEIU Healthcare members stepped up to make Nursing Week a big success in an incredible 80 units across the province. I know this year will be bigger than ever! It is thanks to your commitment to your profession and your union that our members can come together to celebrate nursing and plan for the future. Nursing Week is a great opportunity for us to determine our next steps forward in achieving our goals for improvement. In this event organizer, there are several tools that will assist you and your colleagues for planning a fantastic Nursing Week celebration. JACKIE WALKER Some ideas for your Nursing Week event include a pot luck, lunch NURSING DIVISION PRESIDENT and learn, a gathering to plan actions or political engagement such a meeting with your local MPP, or educational sessions. Establish a committee » Find co-workers who want to help you in bringing your event to life. » Involve your chief steward or stewards. 2 » Connect with your Servicing Representative and let them know of your plans. » Identify if your employer is planning any events or actions and see if they would like to partner with your committee. » Assign roles and responsibilities to committee members. Some examples of roles include event promotion to members, union liaison, treasurer, workplace liaison, etc. Create your plan » Brainstorm with your committee and determine the types of ideas and initiatives that are on nurses’ minds. » Using those ideas and initiatives, determine the activities that will take place at your event. » Don’t forget to promote Quality Assurance modules, seiunurses.ca, online learning, the Nursing Division, and Personal Liability Protection Insurance. 3 » Keep in mind that SEIU Healthcare will help support your event by reimbursing $5 per event attendee according to your estimated target number of guests SEIU Healthcare nurses who participate. » Teamwork makes the dream work! Create a list of tasks and responsibilities and divide them among committee members. » Schedule a couple of check-ins to ensure everyone is progressing and the event is being well promoted. Involve your community » Enhance your event by using the attached Community Support Letter to 4 gather donations from local vendors. In past, members have received weekend getaways, roots discounts, and gym memberships donated. Be creative in reaching out to vendors who service your workplace.
