7 Father Paschal Breau, S.A. - A Tribute 1921 - 2007 Last month we reported the loss of Fr. Paschal Breau, S.A, who ministered in our parish for close to ten years in two separate assignments, fi rst as a Society of the Atonement Brother, then as Associate Pastor. Fr. Paschal also served as Worthy Chaplain to our Council. At the time, we could not provide much biographical information about Fr. Paschal because there was not much available to us. Since then, thanks to Fr. Mike Graham and Fr. Damian MacPherson, who have shared with us biographical information about Fr. Paschal that they received from Graymoor, the motherhouse in Garrison, New York, and Fr. Walter Gagne, who provided the photographs, we are able to present a short biography of this remarkable man – Fr. Paschal Breau. He was born on June 15th, 1921 in Moncton, New Brunswick, the son of the late Edward and Elizabeth (O’Neill) Breau and was named Maurice at his baptism. He attended Sunny Brae School and St. Joseph High School in Moncton, and received a B. Ed. Degree from the University of New Brunswick and his teaching certifi cate in 1976. Maurice Breau entered the Friars of the Atonement in 1941, and was clothed in the Franciscan habit in 1943. He professed his fi rst vows on July 14, 1945, and in 1948 took the name Brother Paschal when he professed his perpetual vows of Poverty, Chastity, and Obedience. Following his profession of vows, Brother Paschal assumed administrative positions for the Friars of the Atonement in Graymoor, Gardiner Mines, Nova Scotia, and , Italy. In 1956, Bro. Paschal was appointed Director of Brothers’ Vocations for the Friars of the Atonement, a position that he held until 1971. During this period, Bro. Paschal was instrumental in organizing the National Association of Religious Brothers, now known as the Religious Brothers Conference. In recognition of his service to the Church in pro- moting the religious brotherhood and encouraging others to serve the Church in this role, Brother Paschal received the pro Ecclesia et Pontifi ce (For the Church and the Pontiff) Medal from Pope Paul VI in 1971. It is a testament to Fr. Paschal’s humility that most of us were unaware that he was the recipient of such a prestigious honour. He certainly did not advertise it. (Photo at left: Bro. Pashal - centre - receives his Papal medal and citation.) It was also in 1971 that our faith community was fi rst graced with Paschal’s presence. Bro. Paschal arrived in Windsor with Fr. Walter Gagne and Fr. Tim MacDonald to es- tablish our parish, which was then known as the Forest Glade Mission, an adjunct to St. Anne’s Parish in Tecumseh. One of Bro. Paschal’s duties during his fi rst stay with us was to teach at St. Anne’s High School in Tecumseh. His ministry among us came to and end when his superiors at Graymoor called Bro. Paschal from our parish to other duties in 1976. (Photo at right: Fr. Paschal - kneeling - with Fr. Walter Gagne & Fr. Tim MacDonald at the 20th anniversary of our parish.) God however had other plans for Bro. Paschal. He was calling him to the priesthood, and Bro. Paschal answered God’s call, when in 1977 he received permission to begin studying for the at John XXIII Seminary in Weston, Massachusetts, where he received his M. Div. degree in 1979. On June 15th of that year, Brother Paschal became Father Paschal when Bishop Donat Chiasson ordained him to the priesthood at Paschal’s home parish, St. Bernard’s Church in Moncton, New Brunswick. Following his ordination, Fr. Paschal ministered in St. Francis de Sales Parish in Richmond, North Carolina, after which he was pastor of St. Joseph the Worker Parish in Richmond, British Columbia. It was God’s plan for the paths of Fr. Paschal and our parish to cross one more time; and so in 1994 we were delighted to welcome him back among us when he came to be Associate Pastor to Fr. Damian MacPherson. It was during this time that our Council fi nally had the opportunity to appoint him as our Worthy Chaplain. Fr. Paschal’s second stay among us came to an end when his superiors re-assigned him to perform formation work for the Friars of the Atonement in Washington DC, and then vocations work in Toronto where he eventually took up permanent residence at the Paul Wattson Friary. Despite his advanced years and well past retirement age, Fr. Paschal continued to stay busy promoting vocations to the Friars of the Atonement, a project for which our Council enthusiastically provided fi nancial support. Fr. Paschal’s down-home, unassuming, and outgoing personality and his unmatched sense of humour endeared him to many of us. Dur- ing his two terms of ministry among us, Fr. Paschal forged strong friendships with many of our parish members; friendships that he maintained until God called him to his eternal rest. Such was the strength of his friendships and the bonds that he established with our parish, that we were often delightfully surprised to discover on a Saturday evening or Sunday morning, that he had dropped in on us for a visit even though he was ministering elsewhere. We loved Fr. Paschal’s talent for story-telling, his joke-telling, and his playful sense of humour; and he delighted in regaling us with his jokes and stories – it was mutually enjoyable. The good Lord blessed Fr. Paschal with a long life; a life that he dedicated to the service of God, the Holy Catholic Church, and his fel- low human beings. Then, on Wednesday, August 29th, 2007, our Heavenly Father called Fr. Paschal one last time – this time home to His Heavenly Kingdom. It was a life well lived. He was an extraordinary man. May he rest in eternal peace. Amen. With sincere thanks for their generosity to Fr. Mike Graham and Fr. Damian MacPherson for their contributions to this article, and to Fr. Walter Gagne for providing the photographs. AJE 8 Our Council In Action Installation of Offi cers of our Council Well, here we are again at the beginning of a new Fraternal Year. As always, one of the fi rst functions of the Fraternal Year for our Council is the Installation of Offi cers. Because of the tight schedule of our DD, the date of the ceremony was established on short notice for the 5:00 p.m. Mass on Saturday, September 1st. Despite the short notice that clashed with the plans of a number of our offi cers, we were fortunate to be able to hold the ceremony with most offi cers in attendance, while other Brother Knights stepped in as stand-ins for those who could not attend. The solemn atmosphere was more sombre by the sad news of the recent loss of Fr. Paschal. Fr. Mike, our Worthy Chaplain, celebrated the Mass and in his homily paid tribute to our recently deceased past Chaplain, Fr. Paschal Breau and to our Order’s founder, Fr. Michael McGivney as two outstanding examples of men who dedicated their lives to God, the Holy Catholic Church in service to humanity. Members of our Council’s Choir who were not out of town gathered to provide the music under the direction of Brother Stan Burke.

Electrical Work in the Church and Parish Centre Very often, there are wonderful things taking place that do not get our attention simply because they are unseen; we simply take them for granted. A case in point is the work that Brother Ron Pertras, occasionally assisted by DGK Mike Agius and Brothers Walter Friedl, Mike MacLellan, and George Pickering, has been doing. A retired Electrical Technologist who specializes in high-voltage equipment, Ron has been very busy over the past several months making many changes to the electrical infrastructure both in the Church and in the Parish Cen- tre, where in both cases, the change in the brightness of the interior is readily no- ticeable. People have probably noticed the brighter environment, but have prob- ably given little thought to the effort that went into making it happen. Not only is it brighter, but Ron’s efforts will result in lower electrical bills saving the parish money while making our parish more environmentally friendly. This is because Ron has replaced hundreds of metres of electrical wiring, upgraded many electri- cal outlets to accept heavier power loads, installed at least one new smoke detec- tor, and reconfi gured the lighting, in many cases replacing scores of inef- fi cient incandescent light bulbs with energy-ef- fi cient compact fl oures- cent lights Ron has used his knowledge of current Ontario Provincial Gov- ernment programs promoting energy effi ciency to take advantage of the grants offered by the government and as a result, our parish has realized large savings in acquiring the necessary materials. The labour alone that Ron has put into the project has saved our parish many thousands of dollars. Our parish and Council should be grateful for having a man such as Ron who is willing to donate his talents for the betterment of our parish. Our Council’s Choir Web Site A recent e-mail from Brother Terry Dame informs us that he has completed the creation of our Council’s Choir web site. Please use the following link to ac- cess the web site - http://home.cogeco. ca/%7E8919choir/. The link at the top of the page will send you to our Coun- cil’s web site. Terry intends to bring both sites together into one unifi ed web site when time allows. It is clear that much thought, work and effort went into producing such an attractive web site. Thank you Terry for a job well done.
