INTRODUCTION

Halal Industry Development Corporation (HDC) has been organizing The World Halal Research Summit (WHRS) for five consecutive years and has contributed towards enhancing Halal awareness at both the international and local levels besides providing an important platform for stakeholders to share and contribute Halal related knowledge and findings.

The WHRS has been part of the Halal Week together with Malaysia International Halal Showcase (MIHAS) and the World Halal Forum (WHF).

This year, the Malaysia Halal Week was introduced as the World Halal Week 2013 that incorporates MIHAS and the World Halal Week Conference 2013 (WHW Conference 2013).

WHW Conference 2013 consists of WHRS and WHF, with the ultimate aim, to lead to the creation of emerging technologies and new frontiers of business opportunities within Halal. This is in line with Government’s effort to continuously inspire innovation in the Halal industry as innovation and research within the entire Halal value chain is critical in creating a sustainable halal industry.

The two-day conference will be held 3-4 April 2013 at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre and focus on deliberating issues and sharing new advancements in Halal research, innovation and its applications in business. “Halal Economy – Creating the Momentum” as the theme, the conference will feature paper presentations, forums, an exhibition and research commercialization. Participants can look forward to interact and discuss with both local and international scientists, researchers, academicians, business leaders as well as exchange ideas on new research findings, emerging technologies, trends, issues and challenges in the global Halal industry.

Essentially, World Halal Week will gather, conduct and evaluate all Halal development and industry advancements “under one custodial roof” to represent our collective and concerted spirit to move forward in the Halal front.

ABOUT HALAL INDUSTRY DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION

Halal Means Business

The Halal Industry Development Corporation (HDC) was established on 18 September 2006 with the express objective of coordinating the overall development of the Halal industry in Malaysia for both the domestic and international markets. HDC is an agency under the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI).

HDC is Malaysia's holistic response to the worldwide demand for better quality products and services as consumers gain confidence in the Halal process. Its key thrusts are to grow and advance the development of Halal standards; facilitate capacity- building for halal products and services; and promote growth and participation of Malaysian companies in the multi-trillion dollar global halal market and industry. Today, there is an estimated population of 2.1 billion Muslims worldwide. The global Halal market is currently estimated at USD2.3 trillion covering both food and non-food sectors.

In its effort to serve as an international hub for the halal industry, HDC provides manufacturers, distributors, retailers, entrepreneurs, researchers and investors with comprehensive assistance to penetrate and serve a growing global Halal market through the adoption of the Malaysian experience and expertise in food and non- food sectors.
