History of video games From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The Atari VCS was a popular home video game console in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Pictured is the four-switch model from 1980–1982. An Atari CX40 joystick controller, with a single button The history of video games goes as far back as the early 1950s, when academic computer scientists began designing simple games and simulations as part of their research or just for fun. At M.I.T. in the 1960s, professors and students played games such as 3D tic-tac-toe and Moon Landing. These games were played on computer such as the IBM 1560, and moves were made by means of punch cards. Video gaming did not reach mainstream popularity until the 1970s and 1980s, when video arcade games and gaming consoles using joysticks, buttons, and other controllers, along with graphics on computer screens and home computer games were introduced to the general public. Since the 1980s, video gaming has become a popular form of entertainment and a part of modern popular culture in most parts of the world. One of the early games was Spacewar!, which was developed by computer scientists. Early arcade video games developed from 1972 to 1978. During the 1970s, the first generation of home consoles emerged, including the popular game Pong and various "clones". The 1970s was also the era of mainframe computer games. The golden age of arcade video games was from 1978 to 1982. Video arcades with large, graphics- decorated coin-operated machines were common at malls and popular, affordable home consoles such as the Atari 2600 and Intellivision enabled people to play games on their home TVs.

DIPLOMARBEIT Digital Preservation of Console Video Games Ausgef¨uhrtam Institut f¨ur Softwaretechnik und Interaktive Systeme der Technischen Universit¨atWien unter der Anleitung von ao.univ.Prof. Dr. Andreas Rauber und Dipl.-Ing. Christoph Becker als verantwortlich mitwirkendem Projektassistenten durch Mark Guttenbrunner 9325367 Neustiftgasse 85/16 1070 Vienna Austria Wien, im Oktober 2007 Abstract Video games are part of our cultural heritage, but with the rapid development of new computer systems the way games look and are played changes rapidly. The public interest in early video games is high, as exhibitions, regular magazines on the topic and newspaper articles show. Games considered to be classic are rereleased for new generations of gaming hardware as well. As original systems cease to work because of hardware and media failures, methods to preserve obsolete video games for future generations have to be de- veloped. This work evaluates strategies for digital preservation of console video games. First it presents an overview of the history of console video game systems. Next an introduction to digital preservation and related work in common strate- gies for digital preservation and preserving interactive art is given. Then emulation as a preservation strategy and the PLANETS preservation planning approach for documented decision-making processes are described. When trying to preserve console video games one has to face the challenges of classified development documentation, legal aspects and extracting the contents from original media like cartridges with special hardware. Special controllers and non-digital items are used to extend the gaming experience making it difficult to preserve the look and feel of console video games.

Through a study of major historical industry events and consumer culture, the frame was set from where to research the current industry design. Thus a value chain study of relevant activities was conducted, ultimately exposing the strong linkage between gatekeepers and the developers of 3rd party complementary software. To get a picture of the perceived strengths and weaknesses of gatekeepers in the eyes of these 3rd party developers, an interview with umbrella company NOGAP was conducted, identifying Microsoft as the overall favorite. While Microsoft and Sony had historically followed the performance play strategy, Nintendo had during the last paradigm shift recaptured market leadership through a controlled migration. An analysis of industry profit potential saw a historical downward tendency, where especially the threat of disrupting technologies had a potential of changing the core industry.

    1. Hardware design and representation of graphics in videogames A case study: the Sega Saturn Marco Liboà Transactions of the Digital Games Research Association December 2019, Vol. 5 No. 1, pp. 1-43. The Sega Saturn was chosen as a platform of study due to the complexity of its internal circuitry and the period during which it was commercialised, characterised by a shift in the representation of game graphics from 2D to 3D. The peculiar characteristics of Saturn’s two video display processors and the way they shape 1 2 Hardware design and representation the graphics of games developed for it are presented in a few selected examples. In particular, it illustrates how a 3D space can be simulated by means of 2D background layers, and how hardware limitations and different video-signals can affect the final rendering of game graphics. It concludes that different graphical techniques, present in a certain episode of a game series, could be absent in a direct sequel and then reappear all together in a later episode, leading to a non-linear technological innovation trajectory. Furthermore, it is ascertained that the Saturn hardware architecture influenced the efforts of developers in subtle and unexpected ways.
