But -- those kids who are really into horses aside -- I think it's a very minor entry in the Newbery canon. Like the stories of the Arabian Nights, this story is full of superstition, good and evil, and harrowing adventures. Assistant Principal, Niwot, CO. Few authors bring more sympathy and enlightenment to the story of a horse than Marguerite Henry, and King of the Wind happens to be one of her best such books, if not her magnum opus. From the onset of its life, the beautiful colt has many signs declaring a life of contradictions; greatness and difficulties that prove to be true. Agba was overjoyed. The boys were prepared by being washed and shaved. I'm not a huge horse lover. But sometimes, like with this book, I return to find the book different, yes, but equally good. I'm not sure how much of Agba's story is true, or if Agba even ever existed, but I would like to think that he did. Sign Up Now.     The Crossed Narrative Plane and Layered Activism: Ethnic and Nonhuman Animal Support Structures in Marguerite Henry’s King of the Wind Abstract: The significance of activism toward human and nonhuman animal subjects often appears in youth and children’s literature. However, it is with controversial and/or species- crossing issues that activism becomes so relevant that the author/narrator also partakes in the effort. In one famous work of children’s literature, Marguerite Henry’s King of the Wind (1948), activism toward ethnic and nonhuman animal interests crosses from the real world and onto the literary plane, where it, in turn, allows the characters who benefit from it to inspire others. Henry, as an author, was willing to write about cultures and characters whom other writers would not approach (Collins 62); she then used the influence of her narrator to support Arab culture (Carazo 1) and nonhuman animal rights and agency. As a result of this support, the main characters, Agba, an Arab boy, and Sham, an Arabian horse whose blood founded a line of modern Thoroughbreds, bring similar concerns to other characters at the end of the work. Thus, from these roles of activism in the novel, it is evident that activism is not static or prevented from crossing planes from the real world into the literary would in a chain of actions and reactions that continue to affect others (within the novel and without).     Early History of Thoroughbred Horses in Virginia (1730-1865) Old Capitol at Williamsburg with Guests shown on Horseback and in a Horse-drawn Carriage Virginia History Series #11-08 © 2008 First Horse Races in North America/Virginia (1665/1674) The first race-course in North America was built on the Salisbury Plains (now known as the Hempstead Plains) of Long Island, New York in 1665. The present site of Belmont Park is on the Western edge of the Hempstead Plains. In 1665, the first horse racing meet in North America was held at this race-course called “Newmarket” after the famous track in England. These early races were match events between two or three horses and were run in heats at a distance of 3 or 4 miles; a horse had to complete in at least two heats to be judged the winner. By the mid-18th century, single, "dash" races of a mile or so were the norm. Virginia's partnership with horses began back in 1610 with the arrival of the first horses to the Virginia colonies. Forward thinking Virginia colonists began to improve upon the speed of these short stocky horses by introducing some of the best early imports from England into their local bloodlines. Horse racing has always been popular in Virginia, especially during Colonial times when one-on-one matches took place down village streets, country lanes and across level pastures. Some historians claim that the first American Horse races were held near Richmond in Enrico County (now Henrico County), Virginia, in 1674.
