    Hall of a debate Ron Santo fell nine votes short in his latest Hall of Fame bid. In Chicago, Ron Santo is a Hall of Famer beyond most reasonable doubts. So what do some in the Veterans Committee see in his career that others do not? By Paul Ladewski Posted on Friday, December 12th Ask even a lukewarm Cubs fan if Ron Santo deserves to be in the Hall of Fame, and chances are he'll treat you like an alien from a land far, far away. Three-hundred-forty-two home runs. Nine All-Star Game appearances. Five Gold Glove Awards. By almost any statistical measure, he ranks on the short list of best third baseman of his time. How can Ron Santo not be a Hall of Famer? That the Veterans Committee closed the door on Santo once again earlier this week speaks of a different point of view, however. The panel is comprised of 64 persons. Each of them is a Hall of Famer himself. And each knows and understands what it takes to be one, presumably. So why did Santo receive only 61 percent of the vote, 14 short of the number required for induction? In the minds of some committee members, there are too many gray areas to allow for it, and here's what they are: • Team success. In the prime of Santo's career, which extended from the 1963 to 1972 seasons, the Cubs lost more games (808) than they won (804). Only once did they total more than 87 victories in that span.

"Mr. Rose has not presented credible evidence of a reconfigured life either by an honest acceptance by him of his wrongdoing, so clearly established by the Dowd Report, or by a rigorous, self-aware and sustained program of avoidance by him of the circumstances that led to his permanent eligibility in 1989. Absent such credible evidence, allowing him to work in the game presents an unacceptable risk of a future violation by him of Rule 21, and thus to the integrity of our sport," Manfred wrote. "I, therefore, must reject Mr. Rose's application for reinstatement." The all-time hits leader, 74, was placed on the permanently ineligible list for violating Major League Baseball's strict rule against betting on baseball on Aug. 23, 1989. Subsequently, the Board of Directors of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum declared that all players on that list would also be ineligible for election. Manfred's decision, which was communicated to Rose both verbally and in writing, does not directly address that issue.

    Dick Allen: 351 HR, 1,119 RBI, 1,848 Hits, .292 AVG, .378 OBP, .534 SLG, .912 OPS, 58.7 WAR* *WAR (Wins Above Replacement) is a newer advanced statistical metric which attempts to estimate how many wins a player added to his team by looking at the totality of his contributions (batting, fielding, base-running, and position importance) Allen was clearly (by far) the most talented of the nine players on the ballot. Contemporaries compared his skills to those of Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, and Frank Robinson. If you look at his 11-year peak (which was from his rookie year in 1964 through 1974), Allen’s statistics measure up quite nicely with the aforementioned legends and several other Hall of Famers. Below is a chart, culled from www.baseballreference.com (the greatest website ever created), which shows how Allen ranks in the critical statistic of OPS (On-Base + Slugging Percentage from 1964-1974. This is one of the best measurements of a player’s worth as a hitter because it adds up all of the times the player reached base and also (with slugging percentage) the productivity of those hits.
