Lindgren, and Megan Schliesman CCBC Choices 2013 5 Introduction CCBC Choices is created by librarians at the Cooperative Children’s Book Center (CCBC), a library of the School of Education at the University of Wisconsin– Madison (see Appendix II for more about the CCBC). The CCBC receives review copies of about 3,600 new books for children and young adults annually, which includes most of the trade books published in English by corporate publishers in the United States. By creating CCBC Choices we hope to draw attention to some of the outstanding books published for children and young adults from among the thousands we receive. While we know that no book is for every reader, we believe that among the 249 titles we have chosen, there is something for every child and teen. Reading everything that comes into the library would be impossible for our staff of three, especially as most of the reading we do is after the work day ends. But every book is examined by a librarian, and many of them are read by one or more of us. Throughout the year we maintain a log where we note the titles we think are worthy of consideration for our next best-of-the-year list. While we sometimes find ourselves in mutual agreement about a book, at other times we disagree—sometimes a little, sometimes a lot. Discussion of our observations, both those things we admire and those that concern us, inevitably leads to a better understanding of the work in question. Ultimately, the books we agree on are the books that make it into CCBC Choices . While we don’t have a formal rubric of criteria required for including a book in Choices, there are a number of factors we consider. Literary and artistic quality top our list, but we also pay close attention to accuracy, authenticity, and credibility. If we have questions we’re unable to answer, we look for informed opinions from expert content reviewers, especially with regard to the depiction of race, culture, and other dimensions of experience. Sometimes we’re challenged by books that are undeniably excellent on one or two of these dimensions, and then fall short on another. That’s when we look to further discussion and experience to determine how those strengths and short- comings balance, and to which side the scale will tip. We may also consider a book because it offers unique or unusual content, especially when we know there is a need and interest in books on that topic based on our discussions with teachers, librarians, and others who work directly with children and teens. We also factor in what we know about children and teens as readers. Finally, we know that the best, most effective recommendations we make are always for the books that excite us the most. And year after year, talented and creative authors and illustrators, and their committed editors and publishers, provide children and teens—and us—with books that engage, entertain, enlighten —and, indeed, excite. 6 CCBC Choices 2013 Organization of CCBC Choices 2013 The organization of the books in CCBC Choices into thematic and format categories has been developed over the years to help teachers, school and public librarians, and others who work with children and teens quickly find books that meet their needs. We often make refinements from year to year in the organization, in part due to our ever-growing understanding of what our colleagues who work directly with youth want and need, and in part to reflect the books we have chosen in a particular year. Books in this edition of CCBC Choices have been placed into one of the following thematic categories when appropriate: • Science, Technology, and the Natural World • Seasons and Celebrations • Historical People, Places, and Events • Contemporary People, Places, and Events • Understanding Oneself and Others • The Arts The remaining books have been placed into one of the following genre or format categories: • Folklore, Mythology, and Traditional Literature • Biography and Autobiography • Poetry • Concept Books • Picture Books for Babies, Toddlers, and Preschoolers • Picture Books for School-Age Children • Books for Beginning Readers • Books for Newly Independent Readers • Fiction for Children • Fiction for Young Adults Picture books about people who actually lived have usually been placed in the Historical People, Places, and Events section or the Biography and Autobiography section, unless the narrative comes down on the side of fancy more than fact. Novels set in the past have been placed in one of the Fiction categories. Graphic novels are assessed individually based on content and placed in the category that best suits each individual title. The subject index can be used to find books about specific topics and in specific genres and formats (“Graphic Novels,” “Historical Fiction,” “Fantasy,” etc.). CCBC Choices 2013 Organization of CCBC Choices 2013 7 Age Recommendations We provide suggested age ranges for each title. These are meant to be general guidelines based on appeal and age-appropriateness of the content. We know that some children and teens are ready for and will enjoy books recommended for older readers. Our suggested age recommendations cannot substitute for professional judgment and personal knowledge of individual readers, classrooms, and communities. There is considerable overlap of ages in the two picture book categories as well as in the fiction categories.

This study aims at evaluating the legacies of this Olympic edition, with particular regard to the new public open spaces created and their sustainability. The research carries out a post-occupancy evaluation of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, which is the main output of the 2012 Summer Olympics. Results show good achievements in terms of physical and social integration while the economic impact appears to be the weakest legacy from hosting the Games.     Analysis A “clean city”: the Olympic Games and civil liberties Chris Jones Introduction In 2005, the UK won the right to host the 2012 Olympic Games. Seven years later, the Games are due to begin, but they are not without controversy. Sponsors of the Games – including McDonald’s, Coca-Cola, Cadbury’s, BP and, perhaps most controversially, Dow Chemical [1] – were promised “what is chillingly called a ‘clean city’, handing them ownership of everything within camera distance of the games.” [2] In combination with measures put in place to deal with what have been described as the “four key risks” of terrorism, protest, organised crime and natural disasters, [3] these measures have led to a number of detrimental impacts upon civil liberties, dealt with here under the headings of freedom of expression; freedom of movement; freedom of assembly; and the right to protest. The Games will be hosted in locations across the country, but primarily in London, which is main the focus of this analysis. Laying the groundwork Following victory for the bid to host the Games, legislation – the London Olympic Games and Paralympic Games Act 2006 – was passed “to make provision in connection with the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games that are take place in London in the year 2012.” [4] It is from here that limitations on freedom of expression have come, as well as some of the limitations on freedom of movement that stem from the introduction of “Games Lanes” to London’s road system. Policing and security remains the responsibility of the national and local authorities.

Sports Ancient and Modern This display celebrates the Olympics and includes artefacts borrowed from UCL’s Institute of Archaeology which itself is celebrating its 75th Anniversary this year. The pottery and figures are all from the Ancient World and were created in a time when unity and physical prowess were held in high regard. Also on display is paraphernalia from the Olympic Congress held in Paris in 1914, at which the symbol of five interlocking rings was adopted for the Olympic flag. Team photographs and trophies reflecting the athletic achievements of UCL’s students feature too from the 19th Century to the present day, but particularly from the time of the British Olympic Games held in 1908 and 1948. Charles Dickens at 200 Charles Dickens was born in 1812 and this year marks his 200th birthday. He drew much inspiration from London in his writing and lived in and around Bloomsbury for many years.

Forcing a child to read books that are either not interesting or too difficult will only discourage them from reading. Use their interests and hobbies as starting points. • Don’t rule out magazines! The short, content-based articles are often written at an easy reading level and will spark their interest in a variety of topics. Most bookstore chains have a huge selection of magazines to appeal to almost every interest. • Read aloud to children of all ages. There is no age cutoff for reading aloud. The pleasure of listening to you read, rather than struggling alone, may restore your child's initial enthusiasm for books and reading.

Lost children and imaginary mothers in Sonya Harnett’s Of A Boy In Powers of Horror, Julia Kristeva writes about lost children.1 These are what she calls ‘dejects’, 2 who, in the psychodrama of subject formation, fail to fully absent the body of the mother, to accept the Law of the Father and the Symbolic, and subsequently to establish ‘clear boundaries which constitute the object-world for normal subjects’.3 Dejects are ‘strays’ looking for a place to belong, a place that is bound up with the Imaginary mother of the pre-Oedipal period. Kristeva’s sketch of the deject as one who is unable to negotiate a proper path to the Symbolic is useful to a reading of Hartnett’s Of A Boy (2002)4, a novel that also deals with lost children and imaginary mothers. However in its portrayal of children who are doomed to never achieve adulthood, Of A Boy enacts a haunting retrieval of the pre-Oedipal from the dark side of phallocentric representation, privileging the semiotic (Kristeva’s concept) and the maternal as necessary disruptive checks on a patriarchal Symbolic Order. In reading the narrative in this way, this essay does not seek to foreclose on other interpretations which may more fully illuminate the material and historical contexts in which Hartnett’s stories of abandoned and lost mothers and children are activated.

After the first 13 issues, most of the story arcs were independent and self-contained from the ongoing or Superman / Batman: Vengeance storylines in the other Batman and Superman comic titles. Twenty-six writers and artists who knew Sam worked on the issue, donating their fees and royalties for the issue to the Sam Loeb College Scholarship Fund. LoebSuperman / Batman: Vengeance wrote Superman for two years before the launch of the title, wrote the book for the first two years of its publication. Unlike later writers, Loeb's work on the book lasted for several storylines, which were interconnected. President Lex Luthor declares Superman and Batman enemies of the state, claiming that a Kryptonite asteroid headed for Earth is connected to an evil Superman / Batman: Vengeance by Superman. Superman almost kills Lex, with Batman standing aside. Superman changes his mind at the last moment. The new Superman / Batman: VengeanceHiro Okamura, assists with the asteroid's destruction. Captain Atom is seemingly killed. Luthor is defeated and appears to die in the battle, although he is shown to survive. In the course of the fight, Luthor is irrevocably exposed to the world as Superman / Batman: Vengeance villain for the first time in Post- Crisis continuity.

The third installment of the Justice League: Gods and Monsters comic book one-shots, which included Batman #1 and Superman #1 , begins where Bekka's origin from the animated movie left off. The New God finds herself booming from world to world. Her Mother Box finally booms her to 1960's Earth. Readers really have no clue how long Bekka has been traveling through time and space. Firmly setting her into Earth's time enables the creators to define her character and motivations within the context of human history. Where time seemed vague in the animated movie, the one-shot clearly takes place in America's past. Familiar events such as the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Civil Rights Movement and other counter-culture movements help move the story along.
