    Name: edHelper Prairie Dogs Squirrels come in many shapes and sizes. Most have the word "squirrel" in their names to give away their identities. But others do not. Prairie dogs, for example, are squirrels with misleading names. Scientists have found five types of prairie dogs on Earth. Four of them live in Canada and the U.S., and one in Mexico. The five types are the black-tailed prairie dog, the white-tailed prairie dog, Gunnison's prairie dog, the Utah prairie dog, and the Mexican prairie dog. Prairie dogs are small and stocky. They weigh up to 4 pounds. They have broad heads, chubby bodies, short legs, and sharp claws. All year round, they wear fur coats made of short, coarse hairs. The colors of those hairs are different shades of brown, ranging from yellowish to reddish. Prairie dogs are usually active during the day. They spend many of their waking hours searching for food. For the most part, they are vegetarians. They eat a lot of plant matter, like grasses, weeds, roots, and flowers. They sometimes eat insects, too. As their names suggest, prairie dogs like to live in prairies or grassy areas. They are extremely social animals. That means they never live alone. They always live in colonies. A prairie dog colony, called a town, consists of several wards. Each ward can be further divided into many family units or coteries. A coterie has a single adult male, several adult females, and their babies. Prairie dogs from the same coterie are very close, and they are not shy about expressing their feelings.

    1 Case Study #2 Terri Irwin and the Australia Zoo Rhiannon Beunder COM 465 Central Washington University 2 When people hear about the man Steve Irwin, they instantly think about the crazy Australian man that wrestled crocodiles. There was a lot more to Steve Irwin than that, he ran Australia Zoo in Queensland, a place of conservation and education. The Zoo has been running for forty years now and is very famous, thanks to the crocodile television show that was hosted by Steve Irwin that would air mainly on the Animal Planet channel. The “Crocodile Hunter” movie was also a big hit all over the world and it mainly showed the Irwin family’s conservation efforts to do research and save endangered species and their habitats. On September 4th, 2006, an unfortunate diving accident happened with a stingray in the waters of Australia that took Steve Irwin’s life, leaving his wife Terri Irwin and his two children. Steve Irwin’s death shocked the whole world, it was difficult for even myself to absorb the news of one of my favorite idols. Although this was the one of the worst events that had taken place in the Irwin family’s life, they were able stay strong and remember that Steve died doing what he loved. Terri Irwin, Steve’s wife ended up taking over Australia Zoo, which she still runs successfully today. Running Australia Zoo has not been an easy job for the single mother over the past years as stated on celebitchy.com, “Terri Irwin has never been particularly liked in Australia, mostly because of her grating accent and now for putting Bindi into the spotlight.” I can personally relate to the first half of the statement as I was born in Australia but grew up all over the world, my accent has become Americanized.

Berrettini, University of Northern Colorado, USA In the Animal Planet series The Crocodile Hunter and Peter Lynch's 1996 documentary Project Grizzly, Steve Irwin, the Crocodile Hunter and Troy Hurtubise, the subject of Lynch's film, reason that action-packed, close encounters with animals are the mainstay of their respective work. Irwin states at the end of an episode titled "Steve's Story": I have to get right, fair smack into the action because this day has come where the audience, you, need to come with me and be there with that animal because if we can touch people with wildlife then they want to save it. Gone are the days of sitting back on the long lens tripod and looking at wildlife way over there. Uh-uh. Come with me. According to Irwin, again in "Steve's Story", his ability to track, grab and even wrestle with animals is secondary to his command of zoology and biology and only serves to advance his mission of "Conservation, Enthusiasm, and Passion". Hurtubise's description of what he calls "close-quarter bear research" occurs in the middle of Project Grizzly when he appears in the Mattawa, Ontario Town Dump (named in a subtitle) while black bears scavenge for food around him. Hurtubise is dressed for the "bush" in what functions as his uniform in the film -- a buckskin fringe jacket and a red beret with hunting knives strapped to his thigh and his back. In a voice-over Hurtubise explains: You wanna learn the behavioral aspects of bears, you gotta live with them.
