Andy Frasco, a twenty-three not so much. year old and jazz musician hailing from the San Fernando Valley in Southern California, is nothing short of an enigma. Influenced by Damien Rice, Sam Cooke, Professor Longhair, Van Morrison and Tom Waits, Frasco’s style is as uninhibited as those artists who inspire him. He has jammed with artists such as Leon Russell, Galactic, Jakob Dylan, Pretty Lights, Butch Walker, The Flobots, Spill Canvas, , Nural, Tyler Hilton and . Joining him is his band, the UN, with Ernie Chang on saxophone, Chris Lorentz on bass, Neal Daniels on drums and Shawn Eckels on .

Bouncing from indie folk to art rock to experimental folk before settling into a rich, dusty brand of -inspired alt country, Blitzen Trapper is a band you don’t want to miss. formed in 2000 in Portland, Oregon with songwriter Eric Earley leading a lineup that also includes Erik Menteer (guitar, keyboard), Brian Adrian Koch (drums, vocals), Michael Van Pelt (bass), Drew Laughery (keyboard) and Marty Marquis (keyboard, vocals). Blitzen Trapper reaches back to ’70s country and Southern rock influences without losing their contemporary appeal.

5 Joe Lewis and his six bandmates churn a slab of rock & roll, blues and , all laced with a double shot of 100-proof punkitude. Growing up in Austin, Texas, Joe took it all in…Delta and Chicago blues, Memphis soul, Detroit garage punk…and what came out the other end was unlike anything else out there. Lewis started his career by picking up a guitar while working in a pawn shop and he let the influences Howlin’ Wolf, James Brown and other icons create a foundation of sound that he’s built a mansion of music upon.

8 In one 90-minute set, this band can take you on a journey from the swamps of Louisiana to the gypsy camps of eastern Europe and then the African jungle by way of Brazil, stopping along the way to sample the deepest grooves of American funk, rock and jazz. Like a good gumbo, they boil it all together with cinematic fashion that includes high-stepping stilt-acrobatics and sexy dancers. This genre-busting band is real people making music and art in real time…and every show is different. With a roster of nearly 30 performers to choose from, March 4th is more like a team sport than anything else. Be prepared, as the band tours with approximately eight horns, five drummers, one bass, one guitar, and nearly a half dozen dancers, Music on Main will reach carnival proportions with this band.

9 Avoiding the calamity of an identity crisis, The Stone Foxes have been described as never sounding like they’re trying to be anything but exactly who they are. Taking cues from greats of the late '60s and 70s, this San Francisco-based band has traces of , and The Band, but what they produce is altogether present tense. With a blues-rock style that stands on its own, brothers Shannon and Spence Koehler work with Aaron Mort to develop deep songwriting skills, warm and a nut-tight rhythm section into a sound that is fundamentally cool.

If you could fuse the likes of together with the string thing that Sam Bush does so well, you might come close to what Carrie Rodriguez is putting out to the universe, but it’s no use making comparisons. Rodriguez is a fresh face on the music scene that really has her own thing going on. Starting violin lessons at the age of five, Rodriguez has developed her art into something that and Mountain Stage saw fit to feature. If that means something to you, this act is not one you’ll want to miss.

16 Young Dubliners August 16, 2012

The Young Dubliners are set to keep Music on Main’s kilt in full tilt with a powerful sound of established Irish Rock. You know the sound that has heads bobbing and fists pumping into the night. It’s like a shot of Bushmill’s chased with a Guinness. No newcomer to this game, the Young Dubs have put out eight albums since’88, making them veterans of a genre that keeps time with the likes of Phish, the Dave Matthews Band and the Pogues. Rounding out the 2012 Music on Main season this summer, the Young Dubs will elicit the oohs and ahhs of a true grand finale.

Tapping the main vein of local talent, Mandatory Air is set to open for Andy Frasco. A staple of the music scene in Jackson and Teton Valley, there’s no better way to start the Music on Main series than a deep breath of Mandatory Air.

23 Shook Twins

The Shook Twins are not your average folk trio. Identical twin sisters, Laurie and Katelyn Shook, blend angelic twin- harmonies, beat-boxing, a wide variety of instruments and genuine humor to set themselves apart. Kyle Volkman rounds out the trio and sound with the upright bass. He can often be found responding to being called “ the 3rd twin”. Touring the West Coast since February 2008, the trio is continually expanding and creating musical circuits in multiple regions and fans everywhere along the way. Once again pulling an arrow from the local quiver, Music on Main hits the bull’s eye by booking Jackson’s Jet Black Ninga Funkgrass Unit to open for Joe Lewis and the Honeybees. With a backbone of bass, drums and mandolin, the Unit uses funk, bluegrass and deconstructed instrumentals to create their unique sound as an unorthodox band that marches to their own beat. With Tim Farris on mandolin, Brad Corbin on bass and Scott Barret on drums, the Unit combines two genres of music to create a truly original sound.

27 Scott McDougall

If you’ve ever lived down by the river, then you have a sense of what Scott McDougall is all about. His songs sit you down by a coffee-can fire in the middle of a dry California riverbed, pull you up onto a freight train in the lush springtime of the Pacific northwest and raise your voice in hymns with the entire family on a Thanksgiving afternoon. Fact, fiction, and a little of what lies in between, McDougall carries on the relevant tradition of oral history and folklore like Bob Dylan and Tom Waits with a little Jesus thrown in for good measure. Inspired by the word of God, his family, friends, fellow workers and fellow travelers, McDougall wishes to keep to the unwritten rule of using what was left by those before while leaving something of your own for those who will come after. Amen brother. Let’s party together.

29 Alta Boys

Claiming alder as their official wood and the raven as their bird, the Teton Valley-based Alta Boys are as much an established state of mind as a group of area musicians. Also claiming associations with the wolf, the trout and the number 12, these guys are an enigmatic blend of local talent that has matured over the years like whiskey in a charred oak barrel. Expect original greatness from the Alta Boys that draw from classic and indie rock as well as the jam band genre. Oozing style more consistently than the Yellowstone Caldera produces sulfury steam, the Alta Boys will set the stage for The Stone Foxes July 26.

30 A Social Experiment Gone Right Many years ago, a slightly eccentric man with a white beard and a black dog came up with a slogan for Driggs: The cultural hub of the universe. This slightly ironic appellation poked a little fun at the fact there wasn’t a whole lot going on around these parts. There were family and friends and the great outdoors, but venues to showcase the humanities were few and far between.

Grand Targhee Resort had been putting on its Bluegrass Festival since the late 1980s and a few local venues offered a steady stream of sound, but the valley lacked the cohesiveness of a free music series…enter Teton Valley Foundation.

In November 2005, the Teton Valley Foundation was established in an effort to broaden the cultural, recreational and educational opportunities available on our island in the sky here at the base of the Rocky Mountains. Around the same time that Teton Valley was feeling growing pains as different priorities and perspectives were being considered for the area’s future, Music on Main debuted on the exact spot in downtown Driggs where the man with the white beard used to peddle Patagonia seconds and other outfitting gear for the mountaineer.

Music on Main is a summer series of free concerts attracting young and old, newcomers and old timers, residents and visitors alike, inviting them all to come together as a community. The free concerts have served to bridge a gap between disparate groups: a social experiment gone right.

Over the past four years, Music on Main has become a staple of Teton Valley summer society, a unique opportunity for people to come together in shirtsleeves and shorts to enjoy the short warm season here. Scores of stellar acts have graced the stage at Music on Main over the years, all complemented by local concessioners who offer the finest food and drink of any outdoor festival.

If you have lived here for a while, there’s no keeping you away from the Thursday night concert series. If you are just visiting from out of town, it’s part of the summer fun you don’t want to miss. While Driggs will never be the cultural hub of the universe, we’ve got everything you need with Music on Main. 31 Random Canyon Growlers

Having successfully served as the house band for a barbeque joint in Jackson as well as a favorite après gig at Grand Targhee’s Trap Bar, the Random Canyon Growlers are as much of a staple as ribs and beans or powder and PBR. They take traditional bluegrass and ramp it up with speed on strings that range from the big bass to the little mandolin. If it’s got frets, the Growlers have probably got it in their repertoire, making this local action synonymous with satisfaction.

Brought together expressly for Music on Main, this opening act is going to be something special. In the tradition of Doc Watson, the Loose Ties, the Reeltime Travelers, the Wilders and many more old-time influences, the All-Stars are going to scratch the itch you've got for strings.
