This directory of environmental education resources within the state of Ohio is intended to assist educators in finding information that can complement local curricula and programs. The directory is divided into three sections. Section I contains information on local environmental education sites and resources. These are grouped by EECO region, alphabetized by county, and further alphabetized by organization name. Resources range from arboretums to zoos. Sample locations were either stratified by drainage area or selected to ensure adequate representation of principal linear reaches. In addition, some sites were selected to support development of Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) models or because they are part of Ohio EPA’s reference data set. Four major municipal and two major industrial NPDES permitted entities exist in the study area (Table 1). Beyond assuring that sample locations were adequate to assess these potential influences, the survey was broadly structured to characterize possible effects from other pollution sources. These sources include minor permitted discharges, unsewered communities, agricultural or industrial activities, and oil, gas or mineral extraction.

  • Educational Enrichment Summer 2021 Special COVID-19 Addition
Educational Enrichment Summer 2021 Special COVID-19 Addition No school should not mean “no learning.” Keep your kids active physically and mentally this summer by providing them fun, interesting, and educational things to do. This summer enrichment guide has 3 major parts: summer theme suggestions (this year focusing on the out-of-doors and fun at home), websites to find activities and events over the summer months, and suggested destinations within a 2 ½-3 hour radius of St. Thomas More. We are already planning ways to have fun over the summer. Joe has chosen a Hiking theme (our outdoor focus) and Michael has chosen Cooking (fun at home). Hopefully this guide will help your family do the same! Julie Esposito ([email protected]) Summer Theme Ideas Joe informed me six years ago that he wanted to study fossils. Michael, not wanting to be outdone, promptly said that if Joe got to study fossils, he wanted to study bones. Thus was born our new tradition of summer themes. Each child choses a topic and we look for books, websites, activities, events, destinations, and adventures centered around the theme. Other themes we have explored included gardens, forts, insects, airplanes & aviation, astronomy & the night sky, archeology, games, international, and Indians. Here are some of the ways we accomplish this: Check-out and read library books on the chosen topic(s) Search the web for videos and kid-friendly websites Have family discussion on topics related to the theme and family game nights Attend programs/activities offered locally for kids that fit in with the theme Visit places in town or as day trips to the surrounding area that fit the theme Look for ways to incorporate the theme in our vacation travel plans Plan cooking/dining experiences around the theme COVID-19: Did you know that in all the countries tracking COVID-19 outbreaks, there has been only one major identified outbreak outdoors? 90% of outbreak incidents took place in homes, workplaces, restaurants, and indoor gatherings (i.e.

  • Historic Soil Conservation at Malabar Farm, 1939-1972
Historic Soil Conservation at Malabar Farm, 1939-1972 THESIS Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Bachelor of Science in Agriculture with Honors Research Distinction in the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences at The Ohio State University By Anneliese Marie Abbott Undergraduate Research in Horticulture and Crop Science The Ohio State University 2016 Dr. James Metzger, Advisor Copyrighted by Anneliese Marie Abbott 2016 Abstract The soil conservation movement of the 1940s and ‘50s was one of the most important historical events in the 20th century, yet is often overlooked in discussions about future sustainability. A wealth of information was written about soil conservation during this time which is not readily available to the general public today. The goal of this research was to compile some of this underutilized information about historic soil conservation, focused specifically on Malabar Farm in northeast Ohio, and to emphasize the importance of this history in current sustainability discussions. Archival research was conducted primarily in the Louis Bromfield Collection at the OSU Rare Books and Manuscripts Library, with additional archival research at the Ohio History Center and a site visit to Malabar Farm State Park. Pulitzer prize-winning author Louis Bromfield established Malabar Farm in 1939, experimented with new soil conservation methods, and demonstrated how these innovative techniques could make worn-out land productive once more. By giving tours of Malabar Farm and writing several books about it, Bromfield used his literary fame and fortune to inform the general public about conservation agriculture in a way that could not be done by university experiment stations.
