Now a new black comedy, written by Simon Bent and opening in the West End, uses the same title, with its naughty anagram in the last word. According to Orton Barnett, who was born in 11 years after her brotherJoe was smitten by Halliwell. I think he really respected Ken. Or rather he, Ken, would get published. And he would be famous. And he would always have this pretty boyfriend. For years, Orton and Halliwell lived in an Islington bedsit, dreaming of fame and playing pranks on society. Then one of the pranks misfired: they were arrested in for stealing and defacing library books, and sent to prison for six months. How could those two have been a threat to society? But prison, as Chris New points out, defined their subsequent lives. Joe went into the dock expecting the worst. Like me, he was from a working-class background. Director Daniel Kramer agrees. And what was interesting is that Ken was the star at Rada, and everybody thought that Joe was just a naughty boy. But prison changed all that. Kramer, New and Orton Barnett have clearly hit it off. As well as working as a librarian at Leicester University, she has also looked after the Joe Orton estate. Taking a break from rehearsals, both Kramer and New are basking in the fun of talking to someone who shares more than a touch of the Orton irreverence Prick Up Your Ears: The Biography of Joe Orton disrespect for pompous authority. Prick Up Your Ears: The Biography of Joe Orton of laughter punctuate their talk. We redress the balance, looking at Ken in a much more sympathetic way. And Joe had outgrown that life — that monkish bedsit existence that they lived. And yeah, in Act Two Ken becomes addicted to pills while Joe uses sex with strangers as an outlet. Crime passionel, the result of jealousy and drug abuse? No one knows, although Kramer and New tease me by saying that they have some idea — but audiences will have to see the play to make up their own minds.
