Fallahzadeh* Department of Entomology, Jahrom branch, Islamic Azad University, Jahrom, Iran. *Corresponding author, E-mail: [email protected] The data on digger wasp (Hymenoptera: Crabronidae) collected using Malaise traps from Fars province in southern Iran are given. A total of 45 species and sub- species of 23 genera belonging to 5 subfamilies: Astatinae (three species in one genus), Bembicinae (five species in four genera), Crabroninae (26 species in 11 genera), Pemphredoninae (six species in five genera) and Philanthinae (five species in two genera) are herein listed. Of these, five species and one subspecies are newly recorded from Iran. In addition, seven species are new records for Fars province. The greatest percentage of specimens is that of the subfamily Crabroninae, with 63.6% captured material. KEY WORDS: Hymenoptera, wasps, Malaise trap, fauna, new records, Iran. Ш. Резаи, М. STEINER, Birgit C. SCHLICK-STEINER, Giselher GRABENWEGER & Heinz WIESBAUER Abstract Crabro varus PANZER, 1799 has been originally described from Austria. After the type material has been destroyed, species identity was controversal. Most recently (BITSCH & LECLERCQ 1993, LECLERCQ 1993), the taxon has been interpreted as a species of the ant hunters, genus Tracheliodes, based on a single female collected in Corse, France. New records of Tracheliodes varus from Lower Austria confirm this interpretation; in order to stabilize the species identity, we designated a neotype from the type area, Austria. Tracheliodes varus is most similar to T. curvitarsus (HERRICH-SCHAEFFER, 1841). We present diagnoses and illustrations, describe the variation of colour patterns and give new information on the discrimination of the females of these two sibling species. New records from Austria are reported for Tracheliodes curvitarsus after more than 100 years, and for T. varus after more than 200 years. Trache- liodes curvitarsus is recorded for the first time from Bulgaria and the Czech Republic, T. varus for the first time from the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Bulgaria. In Laxenburg, Lower Austria, females of T. curvitarsus and T. varus have been found syntopic, both of them hunting workers of the dolichoderine ant Liometopum microcephalum (PANZER, 1798). Based on film sequences, we present first observations on the hunting behaviour of T. varus. The aculeate fauna (excluding Formicidae, Apidae s.str- Andrenidae, and Halictidae) was surveyed in the Ridd arghipei-ago nature reserve (19 km2) and the small adjacent mainland area Solbacken (0.5 km2). The-Ridi, archipelago is characterized by a mosaic of deciduous forests (including some of nearly primeval type), coniferous forests, wet and d-ry meadows, grazing ground. grazing marshes, and parkland. During 1982 - 1990. a total of I 139 specimens iere c-ollected ii the alchipelago and more than 2000 specimens at Solbacken. 222 species (45 Vo of the Swedish fauna) arelepresented in the material ( I 50 species from the archipelago). Of the species found, 35 occur on red data lists from Britain and/or Central Eurgpe.. The wood-neiting fauna was the richest. Wood-nesting sphecid wasps were_represented by.57 species (72 4o of the wood-nesting Swedish faunaj, a figure that outnumbe-rs most Swedish piovinces (including SkAne. Oland and Gotland) and equ_als_the lqTlgr of Danish. spec-ies. bf-wood-nesting eumenid wasps and megachilid bees, 63Vo and 8lo/o, respectively, of all Swedish wood-iesting species were found. The richness of the wood-nesting aculeate fauna is probably related to the wealth of dead trees and fallen logs, the rich flora of flowe-ring plants, ttui exceptionally mild and dry local climate, and a continuous influence from ireighbouring populationi. -

Labuan, MALAYSIA (email: [email protected]) ABSTRACT The list of Egyptian sphecid wasps includes the current names of those species recorded in the literature with indications where these have changed together with previously unrecorded genera and species. Three genera have not been recorded from Egypt hitherto (Spilomena, Crossocerus, Lestica). Twenty-four species are recorded for the first time (Chalybion heinii, Sceliphron madraspatanum tubifex, Sphex lanatus, Sphex libycus, Prionyx judaeus, Ammophila djaouk, Diodontus brachycerus, Spilomena sp., Astata boops, Dryudella beaumonti, Liris pictipennis, Solierella compedita, Miscophus pseudomimeticus, Belomicrus dimorpha, Belomicrus odontophorus, Oxybelus dissectus, Oxybelus haemorrhoidalis, Crossocerus adhaesus, Lestica clypeata, Bembix joeli, Cerceris clytia, Cerceris lunata, Cerceris rybyensis, Cerceris sabulosa algirica). INTRODUCTION This checklist forms part of a series of papers (Roche, 2007a,b; Roche & Gadallah, 1999; Roche & Zalat, 1994) dealing with the Egyptian sphecid wasps, of which the generic key (Roche & Gadallah, 1999) and Sinai list (Roche & Zalat, 1994) have already been published. The last complete checklist of the sphecid wasps of Egypt was that of Honoré (1942) which also included species of neighbouring countries which could perhaps be found in Egypt. This present list is based on a search of the literature, augmented by some species found in collections. It excludes some names given in the literature which are nomina dubia and nomina nuda, together with some where it is now believed that the species were recorded from Egypt in error. -

The aculeate wasp fauna of the Yukon (except Formicidae) contains 153 species and is estimated to be over 80% known. This study documents species of the following families: Bethylidae, Chrysididae, Dryinidae and Embolemidae in the superfamily Chrysidoidea; Sierolomorphidae, Sapygidae, Vespidae and Pompilidae in the Vespoidea; and Sphecidae in the Apoidea. About one third of the fauna, 49 species, have disjunct distributions with populations occurring in the Yukon as outliers of more southern ranges. These species are suggested to have colonized the Yukon during the Hypsithermal Interval, 11 to 9 thousand years before present: their populations remain today at lower elevations on south- and southwest-facing slopes of river valleys. The fauna is southern, composed of predominantly transcontinental species, but significant Holarctic and western elements are represented. There is no conclusive evidence, in aculeate wasps, supporting the survival of these species through the Wisconsinan glaciation in a Beringian refugium. Only one species appears to belong to this category. A number of Yukon species have disjunct distributions which may have resulted from northward faunal shifts during the Hypsithermal Interval. Regional species richness appears to be related to the physiographic conditions of elevation and aspect. Species richness in aculeate wasps attenuates abruptly with elevation while south-facing slopes receive increased solar radiation and harbour more diverse faunas. -

Labuan, MALAYSIA (Email: [email protected]) Historical background The sphecid wasps of Egypt and the Sinai have received much attention ever since Spinola wrote his paper in 1839 on the wasps collected by Fischer. He listed 29 species, all of which were described as new. The next main contribution was Walker’s unfortunate paper of 1871. His descriptions were seriously inadequate and his type material has disappeared, destroyed by dermestids (Innes 1912). Thus of the 27 species he created, 22 are unidentifiable and are, therefore, mere lumber in the literature. Next was Kohl’s paper of 1897 in which he dealt with the material collected by Schmiedeknecht: a number of species have as their type locality “Adelen Inseln”, which is now known to be an island in the Nile opposite Dahshour (see Morice 1900a). A few more species were added to the Egyptian list by Morice (1897a,b) and Storey (1916). Egyptian sphecidology received its main boost in the 1930s and 1940s which saw a whole series of papers by Mochi & Mochi (1937), Mochi (1939a, b & c and 1940), Honoré (1941a & b, 1942, 1944a & b) and Alfieri (1946), all of them long-term residents in Egypt and most being considerable collectors. De Beaumont published two papers on Tachysphex in 1940 and 1947 that greatly assisted the determination of that difficult genus. -

RATZLAFF1 ABSTRACT An annotated checklist of wasps in the families Crabronidae and Sphecidae is compiled for British Columbia, resulting in a total of 280 species, 70 of which are new to the province. In addition, 42 of the species reported here are new records for Canada, two species may be potentially new to science, and the European species Ectemnius cephalotes (Olivier) is recorded for the first time from western Canada. This study was done primarily through examination of museum holdings and a thorough review of existing literature. All available resources necessary for the identification of British Columbian taxa are cited. Intraprovincial distributions by ecoprovinces are presented for each species. Key Words: Crabronidae, Sphecidae, Checklist, British Columbia INTRODUCTION The four currently recognized (i.e., Pulawski 2015) hymenopteran families of sphecoid wasps, Heterogynaidae, Ampulicidae, Sphecidae and Crabronidae, have, at different points in the past century, been treated as one family (e.g., Bohart and Menke 1976), as well as several families (Finnamore in Goulet and Huber 1993). Collectively, these families form the group known as the “spheciform”, “sphecoid”, or “apoid” wasps (Apoidea, Spheciformes); the historic Sphecoidea. Three of these families are found in North America, including parts of Canada, and two, Crabronidae and Sphecidae, occur in British Columbia. The spheciform wasps have, historically, been poorly studied in British Columbia. In 1948, Spencer and Wellington published “A preliminary list of the Sphecinae of British Columbia”, the only provincial list of spheciform wasp species ever assembled. -

Engel ii ABSTRACT The phylogeny of the genera of the wasp tribe Crabronini was estimated based on a cladistic analysis of 177 adult morphological characters and a sampling of 120 taxa. This represents nearly 80% of the genera of Crabronini and also includes relatives from the tribes Oxybelini, Bothynostethini, and Larrini. In the resulting strict consensus tree, the tribe was recovered as monophyletic, but its constituent subtribes, Anacrabronina and Crabronina were not. A major clade comprising about half of the genera of the tribe was recovered with strong support. Based on these results, the current classification is evaluated and the following nomenclatural changes are suggested: 1) Entomognathus should be excluded from the Anacrabronina and recognized within a new subtribe, Entomognathina; 2) Quexua and Holcorhopalum should be transferred to the Anacrabronina; 3) Ectemnius and Williamsita should be synonymized with Lestica.
