The students will encounter the various levels of structure and governance in which we live as Episcopalians and Anglicans. The students will learn of and appreciate an outline of our history in the context of Anglicanism. The students will see themselves as part of a worldwide communion of fellowship and mission as Christians together with others from throughout the globe. The students will read and discuss the “Chicago-Lambeth Quadrilateral” (BCP pages 876 – 877) in order to appreciate the essentials of an Anglican identity. Drawing upon extensive manuscript research, it focuses on the reign of Mary I (1553-1558), when the official return to Roman Catholicism was accompanied by the prosecution of Protestants for heresy, and the reign of Elizabeth I (1558-1603), when the state religion again shifted to Protestantism. I argue that the cognitive dissonance created by these seesaw changes of official doctrine necessitated a society in which religious mutability became standard operating procedure. For most early modern men and women it was impossible to navigate between the competing and contradictory dictates of Tudor religion and politics without conforming, dissimulating, or changing important points of conscience and belief. Although early modern theologians and polemicists widely declared religious conformists to be shameless apostates, when we examine specific cases in context it becomes apparent that most individuals found ways to positively rationalize and justify their respective actions. This fraught history continued to have long-term effects on England’s religious, political, and intellectual culture. -

Press Release The Archbishop of Canterbury Most Rev Justin Welby to Visit South India at the invitation of the Church of South India The Archbishop of Canterbury, head of the Anglican Communion, the Most Reverend Justin Welby will be visiting the Church of South India from 31st August to 5th September 2019 along with his spouse Mrs. Caroline Welby, on the invitation of the Moderator of Church of South India, Most Rev. Thomas K. Oommen. The Archbishop of Canterbury will visit the states of Kerala, Karnataka and Telangana. He will be hosted in Kerala by the Madhya Kerala Diocese, in Karnataka by the Karnataka Central Diocese and in Telugu region by the Medak Diocese. The Church of South India is a United and Uniting Church representing the Indian cultural and national ethos formed soon after Indian independence on 27th September 1947. The Anglican, Methodist, Congregational and Presbyterian Churches came together in an organic unity in CSI. As a United and Uniting Church, CSI has membership in three World Communions, namely, the Anglican Communion, the World Communion of Reformed Churches, the World Methodist Council as well as in the World Forum of United and Uniting Churches. The Archbishop of Canterbury is visiting the Church of South India as head of one of the Communions to which CSI belongs. The Most Reverend Justin Welby was installed as the 105th Archbishop of Canterbury on 21st March 2013 at Canterbury Cathedral. In 2017, Archbishop Welby was invited to join the UN Secretary- General António Guterres’ High-Level Advisory Board on Mediation – the only faith leader to be on the panel. -

THE REPORT OF THE ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY’S COMMISSION ON THE RELATIONSHIP OF THE CHANNEL ISLANDS TO THE WIDER CHURCH OF ENGLAND 30 September 2019 Letter from the Chair of the Archbishop of Canterbury’s Commission on the relationship of the Channel Islands to the wider Church of England, the Right Revd & Rt Hon the Lord Chartres, GCVO PC Dear Archbishop, At the beginning of the work of the Commission you insisted that we should not seek to pass judgement on the unhappy sequence of events which precipitated the breakdown of relations between the Diocese of Winchester and the Deaneries of Guernsey and Jersey. Rather we were to focus on the possibility and shape of a future relationship conducive to the mutual flourishing of the Church in the Islands and the wider Church of England. We were charged to consult with the ecclesiastical and secular authorities in the Islands, with the Bishop of Winchester, his staff and other interested parties. This we have endeavoured to do. In the Report which follows we have proposed a way forward which, I believe, honours the polity of the Church of England and in particular the enhanced level of accountability of its bishops in the light of recent legislation but which also recognises and respects the traditions, both legal and ecclesiastical, which obtain in the Channel Islands. Our recommendations for action are attached. I have been very fortunate to be joined in this Commission by Baroness Judith Wilcox and Sir Christopher Clarke. After a distinguished business and political career, Baroness Wilcox has been able to offer a shrewd analysis of the context for our work while Sir Christopher Clarke with his extensive experience as a former Judge of the Courts of Appeal in Guernsey and Jersey, and Lord Justice of Appeal, has contributed an invaluable legal perspective. -

At times Richard Hooker (1554-1600), as an apologist for the Church of England, has been treated as “on the Calvinist side”, at others as an “anti-Calvinist”. In fact, Hooker and his Church were dependent on John Calvin in some ways and independent in others. Hooker used recognized sources to paint a picture of Calvin and his reforms in Geneva that would negatively characterize the proposals and behaviour of those he opposed in the Church of England, and yet he adopted Calvinist positions on several topics. A judicious treatment of Hooker’s attitude to John Calvin requires careful reading, and an understanding of the polem- ical use of the portrait of Calvin. Calvin was indeed grave and learned, but he was human and, as an authority, inferior to the Church Fathers, who were formally recognized as authorities in the Church of England. KEY WORDS: Richard Hooker, Calvin, Calvinism, sanctification, internal witness of the Holy Spirit, predestination, Presbyterian system Introduction Although Calvin has, since the eighteenth century, frequently been inter- preted as the theological genius behind the Church of England’s theological position, especially expressed in the Thirty-Nine Articles of Religion (1563, 1571), such a conclusion is historically inaccurate. Voices of the Continental Reformation were indeed profoundly important in the development of offi- cially-approved English doctrinal and disciplinary standards, but Calvin’s voice itself came relatively late in the process, which was well under way by the mid 1530s and before Calvin had published the first edition of the Insti- tutes . -

The Civil Magistrate and the ‹cura religionis › Heinrich Bullinger’s prophetical office and the English Reformation by Torrance Kirby 1 Introduction John Jewel, Bishop of Sarum, once referred to Heinrich Bullinger as the «oracle of the churches.»1 While Jewel’s remark conveys a pithy assess- ment of the Zuricher’s pre-eminent role on the stage of international Reform, it is particularly applicable to the case of England. Throughout his lengthy career as Antistes of the Church of Zurich (1531–1575), Bullinger exercised a unique infl uence on the Church of England both as theologian and, on a practical level, as counsellor to both princes and bishops. Given the scope of this infl uence and its remarkable con- sistency over a considerable period of time (almost forty years), it is now almost commonplace to include Bullinger among the fi rst rank of reformers of the English Church, although this was not always the case.2 Indeed it is even arguable that no other divine exercised a compa- rable degree of continuous infl uence over all of the principal stages of the English Reformation – from the Henrician and Edwardine reforms, through the crucible of the Marian exile, to the eventual implementa- tion and consolidation of the Elizabethan religious settlement. At every stage Bullinger was engaged as a signifi cant player, and in later years was frequently appealed to as an arbiter of internal disputes and even as 1 John Jewel styled Bullinger «oraculum ecclesiarum.» See Zurich Letters, 1, 70, (Cam- bridge: Parker Society, 1842), p. 156. ABSTRACT in the Early Nineteenth Century, the Church
ABSTRACT In the early nineteenth century, the Church of England faced a crisis of self- understanding as a result of political and social changes occurring in Britain. The church was forced to determine what it meant to be the established church of the nation in light of these new circumstances. In the 1830s, a revival took place within the Church of England which prompted a renewal of the theology and practice of the church, including the Eucharist. This revival, known as the Oxford Movement, breathed new life into the High Church party. A heightened emphasis was placed on the sacramental life and on the Eucharist as the focus of worship. Adherents of the Oxford Movement developed a Eucharistic theology which promoted a closer connection between the elements and Christ’s presence in the Eucharist than did the earlier Anglican tradition. One of the exponents of this Eucharistic theology was Robert Isaac Wilberforce (1802- 1857). The second son of anti-slavery crusader William Wilberforce, Robert was raised in a family of prominent Anglican Evangelicals. At the University of Oxford he came under the influence of his tutor, John Keble, who was one of the four leaders of the Oxford Movement during its heyday. The Gorham case, whose focus was ostensibly the question of baptismal regeneration, turned into a debate on the state’s control over the established church. Edwin Sandys or Sandes was born in the year 1519, near Havvkshead, in the part of Lancashire called Furness Fells. He was the third son of William Sandys, Esq. and Margaret his wife, a descendant of the ancient barons of Kendal. As Easthwaite Hall was the principal resi- dence of the father, it is probable that it was in this house that Edwin first saw the light. It is not certainly known at what seminary the future archbishop received the rudiments of his education : it has however been conjectured with some plausibility by a bio- grapher that, as the school of Furness Abbey was then highly distinguished, and as his family were feudatories of that house, he was a pupil of the monks.
