A journey to discover the flavours, traditions, history...

AGRIS ITINERE is a trip to the most genuine parts of Sicily, a trip to savour and to experience the strenuous beauty of its becoming. We do this through an itinerary that, although it varies depending on the season, we would like to summarize through what the would call ITINERA PER AGROS (An itinerary through the fields), because Agris Itinere is an experiential trip that starts from truly genuine, engaging and transverse activities, whether they’re culinary, food and wine, sports, historical, artistic, adventurous or natural ones, stimulating the most demanding of travellers. The seasons and the cycle of the fruits of the earth mark the rhythm of the itineraries of AGRIS ITINERE. Choosing one rather than another means choosing always and in any case Sicily. The only things that will change are the landscapes, the flavours of the different dishes and the experiences endured. Six itineraries, six different scenarios, one single area: Sicily.

AGRIS ITINERE is a new itinerary, which we will update constantly, both on our website www.agrisitinere.it and on social networks (Facebook, Instagram), launching various promotional campaigns. There are many new features compared to a more conventional circuit. First of all, the opportunity of participating in typical Patron-Saint Day Festivities (all important and very well known in Sicily), of visiting the weekly markets accompanied by a personal shopper, but also of following courses of the Sicilian dialect, of visiting the few wheelwrights still in business in order to become familiar with the history of Sicilian carts and their creation, and last but not least participating in the harvesting of crops. And more: themed cooking classes, strolls in the fields, visits to the most renowned wineries, to the best-known mills, to the -making farms, and the opportunity of cooking in the homes where our grandmothers still today preserve the secrets of the traditional cuisine. It’s an itinerary that goes straight to the heart, enduring Sicily as a unique and unforgettable experience. We have not left out the extraordinary historical and monumental sites of Sicily’s ancient history, many of which are part of the UNESCO World Heritage. In all Agris Itinere itineraries, travellers will be able to discover the in Agrigento, Villa del Casale in Piazza Armerina, the Baroque beauty of Caltagirone, Ragusa and Modica, just to name a few, but also small/large town centres such as Palma di Montechiaro, Favara, Sant’Angelo Muxaro and , Licata and Naro. In Agris Itinere, in addition of fully enjoying the most genuine Sicilian countrysides, you can choose to stay in renowned farmhouses, surrounded by lush gardens or in comfortable and refined B&Bs | HOTELs. The traveller who chooses an AGRIS ITINERE tour is assisted and supported by a team. Besides authorized escorts and guides, various other key PLAYERS will animate the excursions: singers, personal shoppers, chefs and assistant chefs, ranchers and farmers, craftsmen, common people. Hospitality, in the broadest sense of the word, is our goal and also our means, because we want you to return to Sicily as if you were returning home. Day 1: ARRIVALS - CATANIA/COMISO Arrival of participants in Catania/Comiso. At 7.00 p.m. welcome cocktail and reception. Introduction of the schedule.

Dinner and accommodation at the Hotel.

Day 2: IN THE HEART OF THE ISLAND - THE VILLA DEL CASALE AND CALTAGIRONE Arrangement in a private vehicle and departure for a guided tour of in Piazza Armerina, part of the Unesco World Heritage since 1997. It is one of the most important archaeological areas of Sicily, for its splendid mosaics that were discovered only in the late twentieth century. The city lies on three hills in the area of Erei, surrounded by a forest of pine and eucalyptus trees, a green oasis in the arid heart of the island. Transfer to a renowned farm for a tour and sample-tasting of typical products.

Continuation to Caltagirone. Rebuilt after the earthquake that destroyed it in 1693, it was revived in a late Baroque style that is expressed in original and wonderfully scenic forms, in its churches, palaces and fine eighteenth-century villas. For the exceptional value of its architectural heritage, in 2002 its historic centre was awarded the title of World Heritage Site by UNESCO, along with the other 7 Towns of Val di . Caltagirone is known for the production of artistic ceramics. The most beautiful ones can be found on the steps of Santa Maria del Monte.

Transfer to Relais | Hotel for dinner. Overnight stay.

Day 3: BAROQUE AND HERITAGE GRAINS - BORGO SANTA RITA AND NARO After breakfast, arrangement in a private vehicle and departure for Borgo Santa Rita, where only five families permanently live there. The town was relaunched thanks to the idea of Maurizio Spinello, the “best baker of Sicily”, who opened a bakery in this town which has become a true excellence. At the “Forno Santa Rita” bread is made using only heritage Sicilian grains, following ancient Sicilian recipes, using starter and baked in a wood oven. In 2016, thanks to the recovery and redevelopment of the Baronial Palace, the Micromuseo Immateriale del grano e del pane (Intangible Micro-museum of wheat and bread) was created. A museum where it’s possible to become familiar with and rediscover the places, traditions and culture of the Town, a place of learning and preservation of the know-how of wheat and breadmaking. Sample-tasting of the famous bread accompanied by , oils, and pizza, typical wines and beers produced in the area.

The afternoon will be dedicated to a guided tour of Naro. The town was at its peak during the seventeenth century, in the full Baroque period. During this period the city was enriched with remarkable monuments, whereby notable creative artistic geniuses worked on their construction. We will visit the church of SS. Salvatore, the church of San Niccolò di Bari, the Mother Church and the former Jesuit college, the church of Sant’Agostino, the church and former convent of San Francesco and finally the church of San Calogero.

Transfer to Relais | Hotel. Dinner and overnight stay. Day 4: GENUINE SICILY - SANT’ANGELO MUXARO After breakfast, arrangement in a private vehicle and departure for Sant’Angelo Muxaro, a small town with an ancient history, 30 km away from Agrigento, which stands on a solitary hill in the middle of the river Valley. Stroll along the quaint little town streets with stop-overs, sample-tastings and ENCOUNTERS. We’ll visit the dairy farm where we’ll taste typical cheeses produced daily by a local family, swing by the bakery and taste the “pani cunzatu” with local oil and pepper along with almond and honey biscuits, etc. and then stop by the local craftsman in his workshop to admire his work. It’s the story of a lesser Sicily as told through its people. The stroll continues to the outside of the town to visit the Tomba del Principe (Tomb of the Prince): the largest tholos tomb in all of Sicily. Continuing, we’ll reach the foot of the hill and go down until we reach the cave of the Riserva Naturale Grotta Ciavuli: one of the most important specimens of Sicilian karst. Continuing through the olive, almond, pistachio and prickly pear trees, we’ll arrive at the southern ridge of the archaeological area where about 110 new graves were unearthed in 2007. Using an old trail that farmers once travelled on with their mules and donkeys, we’ll return to the town, admiring scenic views of the Platani river valley and Monte Castello. Once in town, a buffet lunch prepared by the local families will be served to the guests in a courtyard. Among the narrow streets of the small village of Sant’Angelo Muxaro, we’ll listen to the stories of the inhabitants themselves.

Return to Relais | Hotel. Dinner and overnight stay.

Day 5: THE LEOPARD AND CONTEMPORARY ART - PALMA DI MONTECHIARO AND FAVARA After breakfast, we load into a private vehicle and start off on the Leopard tracks to discover the magnificent monuments related to the Tomasi di family. Once in Palma di Montechiaro, our local guide will take us to visit the Chiaramonte Castle, the Ducal Palace, the Palace of the Piarists and the Benedictine Monastery, where you can taste the famous almond cookies prepared by the cloistered nuns with an ancient and secret recipe.

Transfer to Favara, along which a fundamental stop is the visit to the FARM CULTURAL PARK, an independent cultural centre, located in the heart of its historic centre, in a neighbourhood called “The seven courtyards” for its urban structure characterized precisely by seven small courts. Once almost abandoned, the houses have been transformed into contemporary art exhibition spaces, meeting spaces, open kitchens for workshops and lunches, a cocktail bar, vintage shops, and more. Favara has thus become the second tourist destination in the , after the Valley of the Temples. Among the Arab flavours and Sicilian dishes cooked on the premises of the FARM restaurant, you can enjoy a cocktail and buffet with local produce. Continuation of the visit of the Castle Chiaramonte, and then a stop at the Ancient Foundation of the Antonio Mendola Library Museum, among the baroque treasures of the Church of the Most Holy Rosary, including the recovered lanes in some parts of the city centre.

Return to Relais | Hotel. Dinner and overnight stay. Day 6: AGRICULTURAL EXCELLENCE - CAMPOBELLO DI LICATA After breakfast, accommodation in a private vehicle and departure to Campobello di Licata, a small agricultural town inland from Agrigento, which represents the values of rural culture at a high level and in a transversal way. They are expressed artistically by Silvio Benedetto in the murals of the City Palace and sculptures in Piazza XX Settembre and Tien An Men Square, and have been actively carried on by several farms that boast prestigious awards. After a tour to discover the works of Silvio Benedetto, our local guide will introduce you to: the Cantina Baglio del Cristo of Campobello, born from the vision of a new wine route and the pursuit of absolute quality. The vineyards of Bonetta are immaculate. They are found all around the beautiful farm and the low hills of limestone/gypsum matrix of an agricultural portion of Campobello di Licata, where the refreshing breeze of the Mediterranean comes in the evening from the slope facing Licata; the Montalbo Farm, Where they breed the Girgentana goats, a native Agrigentino breed that risked extinction despite the excellent quality of their milk. From this good milk curdled with vegetable rennet (fig, artichoke, and cardoon) made in-house, the company serves various types of cheese: from Girgenti to the classic cheeses, both fresh and medium-aged, a bloomy rind, a veined cheese, under ash (the almond wood), with salty ricotta and baked. But also robiole and Tuma ammucinata, taken from an ancient Sicilian recipe, where the goat cheese is immersed in the liquid plaster and cured at room temperature. During the visit we will taste the wines and cheeses of the two companies in a breakfast that will be animated by the performance of a Storyteller, who will entertain us with traditional folk songs from the rural tradition. Transfer to the premises of Ristorante La Madonnina for a “COCI E TASTA” (cooking class in Sicilian) with Chef Giovanni Gruttad’Auria, with whom you will prepare a dinner with local products purchased directly from the grower, and recipes typical of our area.

Return to Relais | Hotel for overnight stay.

day 7: CULTURE, ENVIRONMENT, AND TRADITIONS - Valley of the Temples, KOLYMBETHRA GARDEN AND STAIR OF THE TURKS After breakfast, we load into a private vehicle and depart for the Valley of the Temples, which is one of the most fascinating archaeological sites in Sicily. It is located in an extraordinary context of harmony between nature and ancient landmarks, including the remnants of the colony of Akragas. At this site, declared a World Heritage Site, the Doric temples of the fifth century BC in tuff sandstone shine with a warm amber, especially lit at dusk, while in winter and spring the contrasts between the colour of the stones and the green fields leaves visitors literally breathless. Along the “Via Sacra” you can admire the Temple of Hercules, the Temple of Concord, and the Temple of Juno. Between the temple of and that of , there is a vast green area known as the “Garden of Kolymbethra”, which offers a wide variety of trees and landscapes. In the most rugged areas are species typical of the Mediterranean, such as myrtle, the mastic tree, the oak, the mock privet, the spurge, and the broom. In the plain of the valley bottom, beyond the small river lined with reeds along which grow willows and white poplars, stretches the citrus grove of ancient varieties of lemons, mandarins, and oranges and irrigated using the techniques of Arab tradition. In the areas the water doesn’t reach, mulberry trees, trees, prickly pear, almond and gigantic “Saracen” olive trees spring up. Eating a “Rustic Country Basket” in the shadow of the majestic trees of the garden.

In the afternoon, visit the Stair of the Turks near , a spectacular cliff of limestone shaped terraces that look like imposing stairs upon which small, wild, white beaches are found.

Return to Relais | Hotel. Dinner and overnight stay. Day 8: BAROQUE AND CHOCOLATE - MODICA AND RAGUSA IBLA After breakfast, load into a private vehicle and transfer to train stations in Canicattì or Campobello di Licata (depending on accommodation) and depart for eastern Sicily, to discover the Late , whose heritage, both for its importance and beauty, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Guided tour of Modica, which stretches from the rocky outcrop up to the valley floor. The most striking element of the cityscape is the Cathedral of St. George, located near the top of Modica. Besides staircases, narrow alleys, and picturesque streets with old shops, Corso San Giorgio connects the high side to the low side, running along one of the highest bridges in Europe whose pillars reach 120 m in height. We will visit the oldest Sicilian pastry shop, where you can taste the famous chocolate of Modica, the recipe for which comes from the ancient Aztecs. Modica chocolate is special and very unique thanks to the lack of cocoa butter; in fact the only ingredients are cocoa and sugar. Lunch at an exclusive restaurant.

Transfer to Ragusa Ibla, whose destiny, like that of other centres of southeastern Sicily, is linked to the 1693 earthquake. It was following this catastrophic event that the reconstruction of the city began, transforming it in the late baroque jewel that still is today. Although its appearance is decidedly baroque, churches and palaces are arranged along the old medieval system.

Transfer to Hotel in Catania/Comiso. Dinner (not included).

The “JUNTA” is a lively area that is always changing. It is a section that is constantly been updated on our website and on our Facebook page. Individual excursions are possible on request.

STORY-TELLING CONCERT: Singer-songwriter Cesare Lo Leggio and his QuelkedCesare band that had represented the town of Licata at Expo present a one-hour show about the life and songs of Rosa Balisteri in the courtyard of the Borgo Santa Rita. This show provides a cross-section of what it means to be Sicilian, encompassing both the traditional and old, but relative to the present day and modern times.

SICILIAN LESSONS: Take part in in an entertaining lesson, where our very special children will help guests understand typical terms, proverbs and expressions known throughout the world. A unique opportunity to step into the purest nature of being Sicilian.

STREET MARKET WITH YOUR PERSONAL SHOPPER: A legacy of Islamic domination, the MARKET still provides the best opportunity to immerse yourself in the scents, colours and sounds of authentic Sicily. A special personal trainer will accompany guests on this voyage of discovery.

THE SICILIAN CART: Travel in an authentic Sicilian art form: painters, sculptors, blacksmiths, carters together with the heroes of epic poems in their showy armour as the protagonists of the pages of history that have walked our island or lived in stories by our writers. All combined without exception, because the cart developed as a means of transport, to then include different art forms becoming a work of art in itself. Sacred and secular stories cover every corner of the cart, along with wood carvings and wrought iron. Not to be missed. PATRON SAINT FESTIVALS: Depending on the time of the year you have confirmed, the itinerary can be enhanced by taking part in Festivals dedicated to our Patron Saints. Here culture combines with faith, the labour of the fields and religious fanaticism, in a bitter, often violent Sicily like the drawn sword of the Saints, but also the tragic and silent land, seen in the faces of the beautiful Madonnas in the processions. Not to be missed!

“COCI E TASTA”: The “Coci and Tasta” of Agris Itinere are not classical cooking class, but very enjoyable culinary experiences, focusing on the theme of the tour. These will unforgettable times for travellers as well as our cooks and entertainers. Besides those already on the itinerary, others can be added, which we can propose as soon as the Tour is confirmed, based on our guest’s wishes.

FESTIVALS AND CELEBRATIONS: Throughout the year, cultural and folklore events take place, as do festivals of typical products, fairs and flea markets to coincide with religious festivals, making the region a real treasure trove to be discovered.

TOUR OF THE CITY OF LICATA: Licata is one of the main and oldest ports on the southern coast of Sicily, with its history representing the crossroads of various people. Walking through the narrow streets of the Marina and the old town, we will meet artists and artisans who will tell us about their art and the culture of Licata with tastings of typical products, traditional festivals and the rugged coastline.

WALK “TRAZZERI TRAZZERI”: A suggestive walk through the countryside around Campobello di Licata, starting from an abandoned sulfur mine and crossing wonderful hills made of crystals of gypsum. Local guides will lead us thought history, folklore and traditions. We will step on the same road crossed by U.S. Army in 1943 during World War II, listening to tales of great battles. A picnic with local products will wait us at the end of the walk. C.so della Repubblica, 173 - 92029 (AG) - Italy +39 0922 881 725 - +39 327 568 4360 Fax +39 0922 881 650 [email protected]
