01503 263206 NEWS FROM THE EAST LOOE TOWN TRUST

The Seafront Watchtower: Viability Study On Restoration The Trust has decided to begin a viability study to assess the work that would be required to restore the Watchtower on the East Looe seafront.

The Old Lifeboat Shed and Watchtower is a Grade 2 listed building which has played an important role in Looe’s seafaring history since the first lifeboat was dedicated 150 years ago. Sadly, after years of trying to counter the effects of its challenging environment, the Trust was forced to separate the Watchtower from the adjoining Lifeboat Shed, which is operated as a retail shop. The Watchtower is now vacant and at risk of further structural decline.

We are, therefore, delighted to have been awarded a grant by the Architectural Heritage Fund (requiring matched funding by the Trust) to conduct a viability study to assess costs and options. If restoration work proceeds we will be seeking more substantial funding, which to some extent would depend on the level of local community support. We will shortly be in touch with the town’s various organisations to seek views on this.

Development Of Wishing Well Site: Update We have previously reported that the Trust has received the necessary planning and listed buildings approvals for the development of the former ladies’ toilets. Since then, further essential work has been undertaken with our architect, solicitors and estate agents.

The present position is that tenders have been invited from potential occupants of the premises and we expect decisions to be made on this by the end of February. The process will be verified independently. Thereafter the necessary building work to reflect agreed use can be put in hand.

Christmas and New Year The Trust is pleased to have made its contribution to the town’s festive appearance, including the Guildhall Christmas tree and lighting. Congratulations to the many others who played their part. What a pity that vandalism to the tree nearly required its removal on safety grounds. Thanks to prompt repair work by our staff this was avoided.

The Trust is also glad to have been been able to make some charitable donations in support of those providing help for vulnerable people.

We take this opportunity to wish everyone a healthy and peaceful New Year.

Polperro Fishermen’s Choir are looking forward to another busy year raising substantial sums for charities. As well as the famous summer concerts on Polperro Fish Quay, the Choir will be singing in both East and West Looe throughout the year, including concerts in the RNLI boat house on Sunday 25th June and Tuesday 4th July.

Full details of concerts by the Choir and the Wreckers are available on our website: www.polperrofishermenschoir.co.uk.

New members are always made very welcome. If you would like to try it out, come along to a practice on Wednesday evenings in Polperro Methodist Chapel, come to one of our concerts and have a chat afterwards, or contact the Choir via the form on the website. We enjoy a wide variety of music and all members have the option of joining the Wreckers and singing for fun (and beer!) in the Old Mill House Inn, Polperro, after the Wednesday rehearsal.

LOOE VALLEY SINGERS

The Looe Valley Singers were very busy during the Christmas period, from Cotehele to Fowey, Mount Edgcumbe to Talland and even a live nativity in West Looe – we were there!

After a short break, we are now back rehearsing for the 2017 season. We meet every Thursday evening in St Martin’s Church Hall, at 7.45pm. We are a friendly group of ladies and are always pleased to welcome new singers – no auditions! We sing a wide range of music, from Mozart to Motown, so why not give it a try and come along.

We’ll be at Societies’ Day in the Millpool Centre on Saturday 25th February. You can find us on our website www.looevalleysingers.org or contact our Secretary, Kathy, on 01503 272550, or our Chair, Jill, on 01503 240768.

We look forward to seeing you soon. © Looe Community News December 2013 - January 2014

LOOE COMMUNITY NEWS: 100TH EDITION

Looe Community News began life almost 17 years ago when it was a sheet of A4 paper. It was started by David Gardner, Looe Development Trust, who continued with it through its transformation into an A5 publication, until he retired at the end of 2013. For much of that time David worked alone with occasional help from others: Sue Harmes, Laurie Watson, Paul Allsey and, to my horror (sorry, I meant surprise!), I have been involved for six years. Looe Community News continues to receive positive feedback for which we are always very grateful.

More than 18 months ago now, we were lucky to have Kerry Newman join us and she has taken on the role of design/desktop publishing. Between us we continue to make small improvements to the publication in each edition and Kerry has brought much needed new skills and ideas.

Our thanks to all our advertisers who make it possible for Community News to continue and to Wendy Norman who has taken on the role of collecting advertising fees. And last, but not least, thank you to all those who have contributed articles, photos, useful information and light-hearted pieces to the 100 editions. Please continue! Here’s to the next 100 editions!!!

Elaine Warne PROJECT RYDER – Looe’s wooden lifeboat

As we celebrate a brand new lifeboat for Looe, maybe we need to remember some of the ‘oldies’. Ryder was built in London 1902, and served the town as lifeboat until 1930. She is the only surviving standard self-righting wooden lifeboat still AFLOAT in the country – YES – she still gets onto the water. She is based in Polperro and maintained by a dedicated band of folk, for whom the task is a bit like ‘the Forth Bridge’. In the summer you may be lucky to catch a trip out on her.

She was used as a houseboat, left to rot on a beach, scheduled for burning, until in 1987 a group of locals saved her and restored her. Like all old wooden boats she needs a lot of TLC, and it costs to keep her going.

To help towards the funds to keep one of our local, heritage boats afloat there is to be a:

QUIZ AND SUPPER EVENING Friday, 31st March, 7.30pm in the Millpool Centre

Lots of fun, food, raffle. Why not dust off your ‘EASTER BONNET’ and come along to this EGGSTRAVANGZA? Tickets £10 (TO INCLUDE buffet) - available from Millpool Centre, Looe TIC or tel. 01503 220160.

If you are interested in helping to keep this wonderful piece of local history alive, please contact Tony White on 01503 263199.
