All Day The Nittany Lions will send 20 wrestlers to the Michigan State Open next Sunday, Nov. 9, before opening up the dual meet season by hosting Hofstra on Sunday, Nov. 16, at 1 p.m. in Rec Hall. Record nationally, will open the 2008-09 season by hosting its annual wrestle-offs. Action takes place on Sun- day, Nov. 2, and will begin at 1 p.m. in Rec Hall. Nearly 40 Nittany Lions will take part in the double- elimination intersquad tournament. Nathan Andrews, 184/197 2-7 Micah Bollinger, 157/165 14-4 The Nittany Lions will send six ranked grapplers to the mat during wrestle-offs. No. 20 Brad Pataky Phil Bomberger, 184 19-10 (Clearfield, Pa.) will see action at 125 after red-shirting the last two seasons. Jake Strayer (South J.R. Brown, 184/197 2-2 Fork, Pa.), ranked No. 7 at 133, will grapple at 141 for wrestle-offs. No. 2 Bubba Jenkins (Virginia Eric Caschera, 125 2-13 Beach, Va.) returns to action at 149. No. 3 Dan Vallimont (Lake Hopatcong, N.J.) takes to the mat at Tim Darling, 157 9-3 157. No. 20 David Erwin (Urbana, Ohio) wrestles at 174 and No. 15 Phil Bomberger (Port Royal, Philip Davis, 197 26-1 Pa.) is set at 184 (at press time, no one else was set to grapple at 184). Jack Decker, 174/184 15-7 Matt Dodds, 157 2-8 Penn State will send about 20 wrestlers to East Lansing next weekend to take part in the MSU Open. Mike Eagen, 133/141 5-9 The Nittany Lions open up their dual meet season on Sunday, Nov. 16, hosting Hofstra at 1 p.m. in David Erwin, 174 23-10 Rec Hall. Admission to wrestle-offs is free. Jared Platt, 197 0-0 Sunderland has coached three NCAA Champions, 22 All-Americans as a head coach (33 overall) and Dave Rella, 165 17-16 seven Big Ten Champions. He was also the 2003 Big Ten Coach of the Year. Sunderland eclipsed Garrett Scott, 141 21-7 the 100 career win mark and is 107-78 overall. As a wrestler at Penn State from 1988-93, Sunder- Adam Smetana, 125 0-0 land was a three-time All-American and a two-time NCAA Runner-Up. He earned both EWL and Big Clay Steadman, 184 3-3 Ten Individual Championships during his days as a student-athlete and was a University and Espoir Jake Strayer, 141 11-5 National Champion. Sunderland’s accolades are as follows: EWL Champ at 150 (1992); Big Ten Stefan Tighe, HWT 4-4 Champion at 150 (1993); NCAA Runner-Up at 150 (1992 and 1993) and 4th at 150 (1991); Career Dan Vallimont, 157 32-3 NCAA Tournament record of 13-4; Three-time All-American (1991, 1992 and 1993); 100 career vic- Cameron Wade, HWT 17-10 tories (100-13-3 overall record).
