CECILIA NOCILLI Universidad de Granada Beyond Dance: Analysis, Historiography, and Redefinitions The anthology Transatlantic Malagueñas and Zapateados in Music, Song and Dance: Spaniards, Natives, Africans, Roma opens with a suggestive image of Ruth St. Denis and Ted Shawn in La Malagueña of 1921, which synthesizes the identity of the publication: an exploration of the transatlantic journeys of Spanish dance and its exotic fascination. The image thus manifests the opposition between the maja and the manolo (tough girl and tough guy), as between the Andalusian woman and the bullfighter. Keyser, Jr. 1993 (Painting by Rowan Hughes) Flamenco Philosophy IA My own view of Flamenco is that it is an artistic expression of an intense awareness of the existential human condition. It is an effort to come to terms with the concept that we are all "strangers and afraid, in a world we never made"; that there is probably no higher being, and that even if there is he/she (or it) is irrelevant to the human condition in the final analysis. The truth in Flamenco is that life must be lived and death must be faced on an individual basis; that it is the fundamental responsibility of each man and woman to come to terms with their own alienation with courage, dignity and humor, and to support others in their efforts. It is an excruciatingly honest art form. For flamencos it is this ever-present consciousness of death that gives life itself its meaning; not only as in the tragedy of a child's death from hunger in a far-off land or a senseless drive-by shooting in a big city, but even more fundamentally in death as a consequence of life itself, and the value that must be placed on life at each moment and on each human being at each point in their journey through it. And it is the intensity of this awareness that gave the Gypsy artists their power of expression. -

EMBODIED IDENTITIES: NEGOTIATING THE SELF THROUGH FLAMENCO DANCE by PAMELA ANN CALTABIANO Under the Direction of Emanuela Guano ABSTRACT Drawing on ethnographic research conducted in Atlanta, this study analyzes how transnational practices of, and discourse about, flamenco dance contribute to the performance and embodiment of gender, ethnic, and national identities. It argues that, in the context of the flamenco studio, women dancers renegotiate authenticity and hybridity against the backdrop of an embodied “exot- ic” passion. Creolizing Contradance in the Caribbean
Peter Manuel 1 / Introduction Contradance and Quadrille Culture in the Caribbean region as linguistically, ethnically, and culturally diverse as the Carib- bean has never lent itself to being epitomized by a single music or dance A genre, be it rumba or reggae. Nevertheless, in the nineteenth century a set of contradance and quadrille variants flourished so extensively throughout the Caribbean Basin that they enjoyed a kind of predominance, as a common cultural medium through which melodies, rhythms, dance figures, and per- formers all circulated, both between islands and between social groups within a given island. Hence, if the latter twentieth century in the region came to be the age of Afro-Caribbean popular music and dance, the nineteenth century can in many respects be characterized as the era of the contradance and qua- drille. Further, the quadrille retains much vigor in the Caribbean, and many aspects of modern Latin popular dance and music can be traced ultimately to the Cuban contradanza and Puerto Rican danza. Caribbean scholars, recognizing the importance of the contradance and quadrille complex, have produced several erudite studies of some of these genres, especially as flourishing in the Spanish Caribbean. However, these have tended to be narrowly focused in scope, and, even taken collectively, they fail to provide the panregional perspective that is so clearly needed even to comprehend a single genre in its broader context. Further, most of these pub- lications are scattered in diverse obscure and ephemeral journals or consist of limited-edition books that are scarcely available in their country of origin, not to mention elsewhere.1 Some of the most outstanding studies of individual genres or regions display what might seem to be a surprising lack of familiar- ity with relevant publications produced elsewhere, due not to any incuriosity on the part of authors but to the poor dissemination of works within (as well as 2 Peter Manuel outside) the Caribbean. -

Initial position: straight, faced, giving the gentleman the left to the audience (first placement). It is danced with finger snaps. The step is quick. This dance begins with the basic step that consists of three movements. First Movement: Left foot forward Second Movement: Right foot forward resting its ball beside the left foot, supporting body weight Third Movement: Left foot sole a little in front of right foot The following step initiates with right foot. First: Introduction 8 beats. (First part: singer will initiate by saying, “Primera!”) 1. FULL TURN— The male and female dance around one another in one large, complete circle to the right on the sides of the square and stop in the initial point (with finger snaps). 2. TURN— The male and female each dance a smaller circle around one another to the right on the sides of the square and stop in the initial point (with finger snaps). 3. TAP-DANCING (Zapateo) AND STRUT (Zarandeo)— The lady performs two circular struts of 4 steps each one. The gentleman tap-dances with different steps. 4. HALF TURN— The male and female dance half way around the large circle, moving to the right on the sides of the square (with finger snaps). 5. TAP DANCING (Zapateo) AND STRUT (Zarandeo)— The lady makes a circular strut of eight steps. The gentleman tap- dances with different steps. 6. FINAL TURN AND CORONATION— The gentleman and lady undertake a final turn, afterwards they move towards the center of the square, spreading the arms near the shoulders. -

A majority of the Filipinos were converted to Roman Catholicism. European cultural ideas spread and the Filipinos adapted and blended to meet the local conditions. These dances reached their zenith in popularity around the turn of the century, particularly among urban Filipinos. They are so named in honor of the legendary Maria Clara, who remains a symbol of the virtues and nobility of the Filipina woman. Maria Clara was the chief female character of Jose Rizal's Noli Me Tangere. Displaying a very strong Spanish influence, these dances were, nonetheless, "Filipinized" as evidence of the use of bamboo castanets and the abanico, or Asian fan. Typical attire for these dances are the formal Maria Clara dress and barong tagalog, an embroidered long- sleeve shirt made of pineapple fiber. Alcamfor (ahl-kahm-FOHR) From Leyte comes this couples dance in which the girl holds a handkerchief laced with camphor oil, a substance which supposedly induces romance. Andaluz (ahn-dah-LOOHS) Also known as Paseo de Iloilo, for its province of origin, this is one of the most sophisticated courtship and flirtation dances of the Spanish era. The gentlemen compete among each other to win the heart of the dalaga, or young lady, by exemplifying chivalry, grace, and confidence. Aray MIDI File (aray.mid) (ah-RAHY) A dance whose words are sung in "Chabacano-ermitense," a hybrid of Spanish that was only spoken in the Ermita district before the turn of the century and today is extinct. -
