Su sólo aparente detecto es la tarta­ mudez que lo aqueja. Los oficiales extremadamente pre­ ocupados por lo~ recientes matines que tuvieron lugar en la flota. interpretan equivocadamente una referencia de Budd, creyéndolo influenciada por las heréticas ideas con­ tenidas en un libro de Tom Paine. Claggart. el capitan de Armas de la nave, responsable de la disciplina a bordo se encarga de vigilaria. Bajo una falsa apariencia de querer solamente imponer el orden y simular buena voluntad hacia Budd, lo que Claggart real­ mante busca es la ruïna del joven marinera. Es una ma­ nera de venganza que este ser maligno promueve contra la oficialidad toda por la que siente profunda desprecio, y contra el esplritu de bondad que Budd encarna y que considera como lo opuesto a su propia naturaleza. Claggart adula y al mismo tiempo aterroriza a un joven marlnero apodado el Novato. quien ya ha sido brutalmente golpeado con el fin de imponerle la aceptación de sobor­ nar a Budd con oro. Este, indignada, rechaza la vil suge­ rencia pero no repara en la advertencia que le hace el viejo Dansker sobre los torpes propósitos de Claggart para desacreditaria. acta 11 En la misma nave Un barco enemigo es avistado y la t ripulación se prepara ansiosamente para la lucha. pero la niebla implde dar~e caza. Claggart se presenta ante el capitan para informaria que Budd ha estado fomentando un motin. Vere rehúsa darle crédito pero se ve obligado a cumplir con su deber realizando una indagación al respecto. En el camarote del capitan, Budd es acusado por Clag­ gart. Confundido y enfurecido por la falsa acusación, Billy al perder el domlnio de sus palabras se abalanza sobre Claggart, lo golpea y le da muerte. Vere debe entonces recurrir a la formación de un Consejo de Guerra.

    Broadcasting the Arts: Opera on TV With onstage guests directors Brian Large and Jonathan Miller & former BBC Head of Music & Arts Humphrey Burton on Wednesday 30 April BFI Southbank’s annual Broadcasting the Arts strand will this year examine Opera on TV; featuring the talents of Maria Callas and Lesley Garrett, and titles such as Don Carlo at Covent Garden (BBC, 1985) and The Mikado (Thames/ENO, 1987), this season will show how television helped to democratise this art form, bringing Opera into homes across the UK and in the process increasing the public’s understanding and appreciation. In the past, television has covered opera in essentially four ways: the live and recorded outside broadcast of a pre-existing operatic production; the adaptation of well-known classical opera for remounting in the TV studio or on location; the very rare commission of operas specifically for television; and the immense contribution from a host of arts documentaries about the world of opera production and the operatic stars that are the motor of the industry. Examples of these different approaches which will be screened in the season range from the David Hockney-designed The Magic Flute (Southern TV/Glyndebourne, 1978) and Luchino Visconti’s stage direction of Don Carlo at Covent Garden (BBC, 1985) to Peter Brook’s critically acclaimed filmed version of The Tragedy of Carmen (Alby Films/CH4, 1983), Jonathan Miller’s The Mikado (Thames/ENO, 1987), starring Lesley Garret and Eric Idle, and ENO’s TV studio remounting of Handel’s Julius Caesar with Dame Janet Baker. Documentaries will round out the experience with a focus on the legendary Maria Callas, featuring rare archive material, and an episode of Monitor with John Schlesinger’s look at an Italian Opera Company (BBC, 1958).

    Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande - A discographical survey by Ralph Moore Pelléas et Mélisande is a strange, haunting work, typical of the Symbolist movement in that it hints at truths, desires and aspirations just out of reach, yet allied to a longing for transcendence is a tragic, self-destructive element whereby everybody suffers and comes to grief or, as in the case of the lovers, even dies - yet frequent references to fate and Arkel’s ascribing that doleful outcome to ineluctable destiny, rather than human weakness or failing, suggest that they are drawn, powerless, to destruction like moths to the flame. The central enigma of Mélisande’s origin and identity is never revealed; that riddle is reflected in the wispy, amorphous property of the music itself, just as the text, adapted from Maeterlinck’s play, is vague and allusive, rarely open or direct in its expression of the characters’ velleities. The opera was highly innovative and controversial, a gateway to a new style of modern music which discarded and re-invented operatic conventions in a manner which is still arresting and, for some, still unapproachable. It is a work full of light and shade, sunlit clearings in gloomy forest, foetid dungeons and sea-breezes skimming the battlements, sparkling fountains, sunsets and brooding storms - all vividly depicted in the score. Any francophone Francophile will delight in the nuances of the parlando text. There is no ensemble or choral element beyond the brief sailors’ “Hoé! Hisse hoé!” offstage and only once do voices briefly intertwine, at the climax of the lovers' final duet.

Publicity photo: the housewife diva, 3 July 1965 (Alamy) i Abstract The Australian soprano Marie Collier (1927-1971) is generally remembered for two things: for her performance of the title role in Puccini’s Tosca, especially when she replaced the controversial singer Maria Callas at late notice in 1965; and her tragic death in a fall from a window at the age of forty-four. The focus on Tosca, and the mythology that has grown around the manner of her death, have obscured Collier’s considerable achievements. She sang traditional repertoire with great success in the major opera houses of Europe, North and South America and Australia, and became celebrated for her pioneering performances of twentieth-century works now regularly performed alongside the traditional canon. Collier’s experiences reveal much about post-World War II Australian identity and cultural values, about the ways in which the making of opera changed throughout the world in the 1950s and 1960s, and how women negotiated their changing status and prospects through that period. She exercised her profession in an era when the opera industry became globalised, creating and controlling an image of herself as the ‘housewife-diva’, maintaining her identity as an Australian artist on the international scene, and developing a successful career at the highest level of her artform while creating a fulfilling home life. This study considers the circumstances and mythology of Marie Collier’s death, but more importantly shows her as a woman of the mid-twentieth century navigating the professional and personal spheres to achieve her vision of a life that included art, work and family.

From 1-3pm, we hope to engage in an exchange connecting people with interests in environmental social justice, cultural revitalization and resurgence and land-based practices such as food sovereignty. Wikuki and Tania can share some of their work, ranging from Indigenous carving to using Polynesian phonetics to understand how to build Indigenous institutions in areas such as health services. Local attendees, if they choose, can share their ideas, traditions and strategies.     “Untouchable” and ”Most Recommendable” Opera Recordings: a very personal guide by Ralph Moore My handful of regular readers might have noticed some glaring omissions in the list of thirty-seven major operas whose discographies I have surveyed over the last couple of years - operas whose quality and popularity are such that one might reasonably have expected me to have included them in my labours. There are, after all, probably around fifty truly first-rate operas which have been most often performed and recorded and I have by no means covered them all. I received requests to survey some of the following but on consideration, I realised that there were good reasons for my reluctance to do so. The most obvious omissions are these twelve operas: Verdi’s La traviata and Il trovatore; Wagner’s Lohengrin and Tannhäuser; Mozart’s Don Giovanni; Puccini’s La bohème, Tosca, Madama Butterfly and Turandot; Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia; Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor and Beethoven’s Fidelio. My reason for not having reviewed them collectively is that either the opera in question has received one or two recordings of such definitive quality that consideration of the others is otiose or there are so many good recordings of it in the catalogue that making a helpful or meaningful recommendation becomes difficult. I have therefore decided to circumvent the problem by making some brief, annotated recommendations and guidance for those major operas hitherto neglected. Obviously, my selections are highly subjective and controversial, and other collectors will be dismayed that I have ostensibly rejected their own candidates for recordings of classic status or nominated one they loathe but at the same time I think I may fairly claim that these are, in general, recordings which have stood the test of time.
