Lesson Title: The Battle of Britain Subjects U. S. History, World History Suggested time One 50-minute class period Grade Level 7-12 Essential Questions Why and how did the Battle of Britain take place? Why did Germany consider Great Britain to be a threat? Objective To illustrate how the advancement of technology played a significant part - along with the British Prime Minister’s leadership - in the Battle of Britain during World War II. Overview This lesson provides an overview of the German territorial expansion that happened in Europe during the 1930’s leading up to the onset of World War II along with a review of key leaders. Students will watch two short videos that focus on the key technologies that were developed to help the British military defend their homeland against Germany during the Battle of Britain. After viewing both videos, students will work with a partner to discuss and answer specific questions related to the videos. The focus will be on the importance of technology in winning the Battle of Britain tied in with the leadership of Winston Churchill. The students will be assigned a RAFT writing assignment to be completed individually. HAWKER AIRCRAFT, HAWKER SIDDELEY & BRITISH AEROSPACE IN KINGSTON H.G.Hawker Engineering 1920 - 1935 Hawker Aircraft 1935 - 1963 Hawker Siddeley Aviation 1963 - 1977 British Aerospace 1977 - 1992 Brief History In 1920 the Sopwith Aviation team re-started as H. G. Hawker Engineering Co., named after their pilot Harry Hawker. New aircraft were sold in small numbers until Sydney Camm became Chief Designer in 1925. 3,000 of Sydney Camm’s Hart and Fury biplanes were built through the 1930s, making Hawker very profitable. Hawker’s success allowed Tommy Sopwith to buy other British aircraft companies and form Hawker Siddeley Aircraft Hundreds of Sydney Camm’s Hurricane monoplane fighters were in service from the start of the war. 14,000 were built and it became the most successful allied fighter. Camm’s Typhoon and Tempest fighters were also invaluable in ground attack and intercepting V1 flying bombs. From 1948 the company, always based in Kingston, moved to the Richmond Road factory, with Dunsfold Aerodrome for final assembly and flight testing. Sir Sydney Camm’s jet aircraft were equally successful, 2,500 Sea Hawks and Hunters were built. Ralph Hooper secured Hawker’s future when he devised the vertical take-off P.1127 and its Harrier development. Under Chief Designer John Fozard the Harrier became the only successful vertical take-off combat aircraft. Over 800 were sold. As Chief Engineer Ralph Hooper directed the design of the Hawk advanced trainer and light fighter. Nearly 1000 had been sold by 2012. By 1977, when it was nationalised into British Aerospace, Sir Thomas Sopwith’s Hawker Siddeley Aviation owned half of Britain’s aircraft industry. -

During the celebrated Schneider Trophy races, both R. J. Mitchell and Dr Mario Castoldi would design two of the most impressive aircraft the world has ever seen. Powered by the Rolls-Royce R engine, Mitchell’s Supermarine S 6B would claim the prize for Britain once and for all on The Spitfire’s ancestry can be traced directly to the Supermarine S 6B Schneider Trophy winner of 1931. Creating the seaplane, powered by a Rolls-Royce R engine, provided both Supermarine and Rolls- Royce with a sound grounding for the future development of both the Spitfire and the Merlin engine. The Battle of Britain Highlights for KS3 and KS4 visits To find out more about a critical turning point in the history of the UK, visit our Battle of Britain display, located across Hangars 3, 4 and 5. The Battle of Britain, 10 July to 31 October 1940, was a large air battle fought between the German Luftwaffe and the Royal Air Force of Great Britain. If lost by the RAF, it would have opened the opportunity for Germany to conquer the British Isles. This would have fulfilled the Nazi ambition of domination of Western Europe and would have made it almost impossible for other countries (such as the USA) to launch a counterattack against Germany. Winning the Battle of Britain is considered to have been one of the RAF’s most important contributions to British and world history. Our 11-minute film ‘Our Finest Hour’ presents a useful overview of the events of the Battle of Britain and of its importance in the Second World War as a whole. This serves as a good introduction to the topic or it can be watched to consolidate learning for those who have already studied it at school. This technology and the processing of the information it gave, enabled the RAF’s fighter pilots the time they needed to scramble to meet the threat of the Luftwaffe. -
