IRAQ Rockets fall near US troops

Civilian injuries reported; security tightened after killing of Iranian general

BY CHAD GARLAND Stars and Stripes IRBIL, Iraq — Several rockets struck areas in Baghdad and an air base used by American troops Saturday, the Iraqi government said. Five civilians were reported injured in the capital’s Jadriya neighborhood. No casualties were reported at two other impact sites, Grand Celebrations Square in the Green Zone, and Balad Air Base, about 55 miles north of Baghdad. The attacks came hours after the U.S.- led coalition in Iraq bolstered security at bases and suspended training with gov- ernment security forces in the wake of a deadly strike that killed Iran’s Gen. Qas- sem Soleimani and Iraqi militia leaders, a military official said. “Our command places protection of U.S. forces, as well as our allies and se- curity partners in the coalition as the top priority,” a coalition military official said on condition of anonymity. “We re- main vigilant and resolute.” ALEX BRANDON/AP SEE ROCKETS ON PAGE 7 An Army carry team moves a transfer case containing the remains of U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class Michael Goble, at Dover Air Force Base, Del., on Dec. 25. BY PHILLIP WALTER WELLMAN Stars and Stripes wenty-two American service members were killed in Afghanistan in 2019, the highest number since NATO combat operations in the country ended at the end of 2014. Since then, the United States has continued a separate counterterrorism mission. All but four of the military fatalities in Afghanistan in 2019 were combat-related. The deaths came as Washington held direct peace talks with the Taliban aimed at the ending the war, the U.S.’s longest, throughout most of the year. The talks are ongoing. Roughly 13,000 American troops were deployed to Afghanistan at the start of 2020. TSince the war began in 2001, some 2,400 U.S. service members have been killed in the country, while more than 20,000 have been wounded.
