AND CANADA WITH A TREATMENT OF THE EUROPEAN SPECIES TORTELLA NITIDA Patricia M. Eckel Division of Botany, Buffalo Museum of Science, 1020 Humboldt Parkway, Buffalo, New York 14211 Abstract. The moss genus Tortella (Pottiaceae) is re-examined for continental North America north of Mexico. Tortella alpicola is distinguished from T. fragilis as an uncommon but widespread taxon. Tortella japonica is considered to be a minor variant of T. humilis. Tortella rigens is new to the United States on the basis of comparison of American material with that of Europe, previous reports being erroneous. Tortella nitida is redescribed from authentic material and is excluded from the North American flora. The hitherto European Tortella tortuosa var. fragilifolia is reported from American plant populations. Tortella inclinata var. densa is reported as new to North America as a comb. nov. The bipolar distribution of Tortella fragilis is confirmed. Tortella inclinata var. inclinata is excluded from the flora of Arctic North America—specimens on which the species were cited were found to be T. inclinata var. densa instead. This study of the genus Tortella in continental North Tortella alpicola, as T. fragilis var. tortelloides American north of Mexico was especially undertaken to S. W. Greene, once claimed to be conspecific to or address certain problematic taxa. ИГНАТОВА1 Abstract Tortella densa (Lorentz & Molendo) Crundwell & Nyholm – a rare species with disjunctive Holarctic distribution is found in Russia for the first time in north-west- ern periphery of the Anabar Plateau (Taimyr District, East-Siberian Subarctic), ca. 3500 km from the nearest localities in North Europe and Alaska. This species dif- fers from the closely related T. inclinata (Hedw.) Limpr. by strongly and uniformly twisted leaves, and massive coroniform papillae on thickened outer cell walls in distal leaf lamina. The description and illustrations of Siberian specimen are given, and a comparison with European and American specimens are provided. Резюме Tortella densa (Lorentz & Molendo) Crundwell & Nyholm – редкий вид с преимущественно северным дизъюнктивным распространением в Европе и Северной Америке, впервые приводится для России с северо-западной периферии Анабарского плато (Таймырский Муниципальный р-н, восточно- сибирская Субарктика). Вид отличается от близкого T. inclinata (Hedw.) Limpr. однообразной сильной закрученностью листьев вокруг стебля, а также массивными коронообразными папиллами, сидящими на сильно утолщенных внешних стенках клеток дистальной части листа. Приводятся описание и иллюстрации сибирского образца и его сравнение с европейскими и американскими. Cибирское местонахождение вида удалено от ближайшего примерно на 3500 км. In the course of study of Didymodon species Tortella alpicola was described by Dixon in with fragile leaf tips, the first author found in 1930 from the Himalayas. Later Greene described Altaian collections a puzzling specimen of it from the Antarctic as Sarconeuron tortelloides Totrella with the structure of the upper leaf much S. W. Greene (Greene & al., 1970), which soon like that of Didymodon gaochenii B. C. Tan et was transferred to Tortella (Robinson, 1972). Jia Yu. QUBS Moss Species
Queen’s University Biological Station Species List: Mosses The current list has been compiled by Dr. Ivy Schoepf, QUBS Research Coordinator, in 2018 and includes data gathered by direct observation, collected by researchers at the station and/or assembled using digital distribution maps. The list has been put together using resources from The Natural Heritage Information Centre (April 2018); The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (February 2018); iNaturalist and GBIF. Contact Ivy to report any errors, omissions and/or new sightings. Based on the aforementioned criteria we can expect to find 37 species of mosses (phylum: Figure 1. An Updated Checklist of Bryophytes of Karnataka 1 An Updated Checklist of Bryophytes of Karnataka Uwe Schwarz Abstract: SCHWARZ, U. (2013): An Updated Checklist of Bryophytes of Karnataka. During the analysis of collections made by the author and company in Madikeri (Coorg) district the need of an updated checklist became eminent. Literature studies were carried out alongside with the identification of specimen. Liverworts were added to the existing checklist of mosses of Karnataka. Location information of previous publications has been critically revised and reflected in the current list. An extended history of the bryological exploration of the state of Karnataka is given. 1. Introduction Karnataka is one of the southern states of India. It borders the Arabian Sea to the west, Maharashtra to the north, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana to the east, Tamil Nadu to the south east and Kerala to the south west. It covers an area of more than 190,000 square kilometres and got a population of approximately 61 million. From east to west there are 3 geographical regions – the coastal region, the Western Ghats and the Bayaluseeme region comprising the plains of the Deccan plateau. The majority of the state is part of the Bayaluseeme region that stretches for 150 to 200 km from the eastern foot of the Western Ghats to the state boarders in the east. Due to its arid nature this region was hardly visited by bryologists. The climate is influenced by the monsoon, providing seasonal rainfalls with a gradient from about 3500 mm in the west, with maximums up to 5000 mm, to 5-600 mm in the east. -
