THE TRAIL BIAZER 1973 Edition THE INDIANAPOLIS HIKING CLUB Pa e 2 The Indianapolis Hiking Club completed its 17th year on October 1, 1973 with a membership of 258. The growth and vitality of a club such as ours depends to a great extent on dedicated leaders as well as on active members. Last year we were fortunate to have officers of the caliber of the following: DIRECTORS Committee Chairmen President . .. .... Ted Fields Jack Gainey Publicity Edna Stinson Vice-President . ... Tom Hill JoAnn Jones Social -- Ruth Overpeck & Genie Grasso· Treasurer ......... Alice Roth Win Pulsifer Publications -- Bill Larrison · Secretary ... .... Viola Hill Geneva Ryan Membership -- Sylvia Retherford & Pathfinder .•. •. Henry Moore Mary Frances Milam During the year there was a varied selection of hikes and special events - there was something of interest for all. 5 overnights, 1 bus trip, the annual Christmas party, the family picnic, 4 club general meetings and socials, plus the regular scheduled Sunday hikes. On page 4 is a list of the hikes and overnights for the year · listing the leaders and the attendance records. Following on pages 5, 6, 7, and 8 are the official mileage records of each individual member, plus a listing of the mileage records of children of members. The first overnight was at Shakamak State Park in October. This is always a perfect way to spend a fall weekend in Indiana. Hiking in the crisp fall air was exhilarating, and a halloween party in the evening followed by refreshments in the log cabin recreation building proved to be the highlight of the outing. The last weekend in January the club was again at Pokagon where some 75 people enjoyed everything but the toboggan slide. This is promised to be ready for next year. However we did have plenty of coffee!! In April we met at Turkey Run for an overnight with our friends from the Louisville Hiking Club. The wild flowers along the trails were beautiful, and we also had real cooperation from the weather man. The first weekend in June found us back at our old favorite - Gnaw Bone Camp - for some more of the superb hospitality of the Lorenze's. The quiet beauty of this camp has an enchantment all its own. The last weekend outing of the club year (Labor Day) was at Clifty Falls - and was it hot! The view of the Ohio River from the old hotel balcony is always inspiring. And Vic led us along a very interesting historic trail through the old river city of Madison. The weekly hikes are quite varied - from 2 miles in length to 22 miles; from bus trips to cave explorations; from city hikes to primitive forest trails. The club is responsive to the wishes of the members. Please let the officers know what kind of activities you would like the club to have. What kind of places would you like to visit or explore with the club. We need your help in planning. Perhaps some of you may be able to get permission to visit and hike over private property where the club has not been before. Also the club would like to have new leaders for hikes. If you have a favo~ite place to hike, why not volunteer to lead the club there? THE TRAIL BLAZER 1973 Edition THE INDIANAPOLIS HIKING CLUB Page 3 Ted Fields over the past two years has been most active in the club having been Vice President in 1972 and President in 1973. He expresses well how many of us feel about belonging to the Indianapolis Hiking Club: "Two years - and hasn't it been a ball! October 1, 1971, I became Vice-President of our club, and on October 1, 1972 the President . I can never express the pleasure and growth I have derived from the experience. I can only express my heartfelt thanks for the support of all my fellow officers, board members, committee people, and especially you - the membership. I have grown as a person, finding an intense rebirth of faith in people, a solid foundation for a love of nature, a basic belief in enviromental and ecol ogical activism, an outlet for frustrated literary ambitions, and a burning desire to promote and participate in the most active of all outdoor organizations in the State of Indiana. We offer wholesome activities fifty-two weeks a year attended by the greatest folks available. What other organization can boast such assets? Can I say more? Only that I will continue to work for "the encouragement of the love of nature; the dissemination of knowledge of the attractions of the out- of- doors; the promotion of outdoor recreation," through our organization and those outlets of simular interests. Thank you for many beautiful trips and hikes, and experiences - and come, share the future; participate and enjoy!
