VOL 9 NO l THE INDIANAPOLIS HIKING CLUB (Happiness - A Step at a Time) The Year 1977 in Review This 9th issue of the "TRAIL BLAZER" comnemorates the 21st year of activities for the INDIANAPOLIS HIKING CLUB, listing some of the achievements and highlights during the year. The strength of a club like this depends to a great extent upon the active participation of members. At the end of the year on October 1, 1977, there were 315 members. As you can tell from the list of hikes Qn one of the following pages, there were many of the members who enthusiastically supported the club ' s program of hikes and overnights. The club has indeed been most fortunate in always having a group of capable officers leading it. The monetary pay is not great (in fact - nothing). However there are other rewards, and the officers of the Indianapolis Hiking Club always seem to enjoy the work. That's mainly because it is a pleasure to plan and work for such a great group of people as belong to the Ind:fa napolis Hiking Club. Following in the footsteps of previous officers of the Club, the following group of people did an outstanding job of leading the club during 1977: DIRECTORS COMMITTEE HEADS President . ..... This is the principle activity of the Indianapolis Hiking Club (although many think that eating should rank very high) . Many people can not do this much hiking, for a variety of reasons. The pleasure of hiking is available to all members, and although you may not be able to come out as often as some, and perhaps you are not physically able to ~ ke the longer , more rugged hikes, you can still enjoy hiking along the trails with your lends in the club on the shorter, mor e easy hikes. The club is endeavoring to have such a variety of hikes to suit the desires of all the members. · PLEASE COME OUT AND HIKE WITH US WHENEVER YOU CAN - YOU WILL GET MORE OUT OF THE CLUB! ! THE TRAIL BLAZER 1977 Edition THE INDIANAPOLIS HIKING CLUB Page 2 The club overnight outings during the year were well attended. Some of you don't come to these - you don't know wha t you are missing . Ask some of the people who do attend. The first overnight of the year was October 9th and 10th 1976 at beautiful Camp Riley in Bradford Woods (near Martinsville). A joint meet with our friends from the Louisville Hiking Club. About 80 people enjoyed the magnificent new facilities at Camp Riley - and the f a ll color was at its height . In February of 1977, the club hiked through the snow at Spring Mill State Park. What a beautiful sight the Village was with its heavy cover of new snow. Kate Lehman slipped and broke a bone on the ice, but Joe got her all fixed up and she enjoyed the rest of the stay with her usual good humor. Memorial Day weekend at Gnaw Bone Camp wa s fabulous - the weather was so great for swimming that we became the Indianapolis Swimning Club, with a little hiking thrown in for a change of pace. Who can forget the full moon coming up over the trees of the valley as we square danced in the open in front of the dining room . And how about Fred's ice cold watermelon. Our last weekend wa s Labor Day at Na tural Bridge State Park in Kentucky. What a break we got frooi the weather. Great hiking and how about the Sunday outdoor picnic - we're still t alking about the 3 gallons of baked beans from the Pulsifers heated in the big iron pot . Others furnished tomatoes and other garden vegetables to go with the Kentucky Fried Chicken. Wha t a scenic spot near Sky Bridge in the Na tional Forest. And every evening there was entertainment and square dancing down on Hoe Down Island below the Lodge . Our annua l Christmas party wa s on December 4th at the Wa llace Street Presbyterian Church. Had a good turn-out for the pitch-in supper and program in tune with the season. Sa id good-by to Carl & Marie Williams who were moving to Florida . Our annual summer picnic in July was at the Conservation Bird Dog Club near Amo. A big crowd enjoyed the games and activities and the home made ice cream, even though Win had to use a chisel on his since he hurried it up with dry ice. A resume of the 1977 hiking would not be complete without mention of the extreme cold hiking during January - especia lly at Libby Moore's hike in Arbuckle Acres and Frank Thompson 's hike at Thatcher Community . It was really terrible weather, but a few brave souls made it. Be sure to read a list of the hikes for 1977 on the next pages. Maybe you can su~gest a new one to the pathfinder to add to the old established hikes . The hikes varied from 3 miles to 22 miles, and included a couple of new areas - Hoosier National Forest near the Ohio River - and the Woapikamikunk Tr ail in Anderson. On September 25th the hikers a ll surprised the leader, Ed Chambers with a birthday party complete with cakes, during the lunch break a t Bean Blossom Lake . He couldn't understand why everyone was t aking so long to eat - he wanted to get on with the hike - and he was really surprised. Would be nice if a ll of us could ce lebrate our 77th birthday by leading a 15 ~ile hike in a beautif ul forest area like Morgan-Monroe. The club is in its 22nd year, and more than ever our members are realizing the meaning of our motto "HAPPINESS - A STEP AT A TIME". In our tense everyday world, there is true re l axa tion in hiking a long the beautiful trails of our Hoosier State, particularly while in the companionship of members of the Indianapolis Hiking Club.
